Round Two on TiVo Troubleshooting

Philip Series 1 TiVo, Maxtor 160GB A drive. Stuck in endless cycle between Welcome and Almost There screens.

Before I test the theory it's the modem and disable the modemtest, I thought I'd try and determine if, in fact, the drive has gone south even though it's only been in the TiVo five months, seeing that several people have seen their Maxtor drives die in a very short time.

I've got the software to run diagnostics, which I know may not catch the error. The other suggestion was to try a different drive, but the only one I have that would work is my C drive in my PC, which is a 40GB drive.

My question is, can I return the C drive to its place in the PC if I use it to test my TiVo? I have a second 10GB drive onto which I can copy everything on my C drive and I have my Win98 disk so I can reinstall the OS.

Am I looking to cause trouble for myself in my PC if I do this?

What is so scary about deleting modemtest? It doesn't contribute anything to the operation of the TiVo. You could copy it to your C: drive if you want to keep it, or even rename it (mv <current name> <newname>), which would have the same effect.

Whether the TiVo boots in that configuration will give you your answer.

I just figured if I deleted it and the problem *wasn't* the modem, then the TiVo modem would never wrok again and I'd have to get an external modem regardless. But copying the file to my C drive would work; that way, if it turns out *not* to be the modem, I can restore the file.

Thanks!

Going through the diagnostics program from Maxtor identified the drive as the problem, fixed the problem, and TiVo was brought back from the brink of death (not to mention the GSoD).

Thanks to all who provided help.
