Justice League "Wild Cards" SPOILERS

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK...I'm not through watching the episode yet, but what the heck is up with the fat rat walking behind the Joker before he announces that the girl is going to make everyone crazy?

J

Forget the plot - it was weak. IMO the point of the whole episode was to see GL and Hawgirl get down to it. When he took off her helmet, it was better than Luke removing Vader's!

Posted by: jwjody

She was drawn rather well...for a cartoon character...

I kinda liked how it was put together. With Joker "hosting" a Reality TV show. The Royal Flush gang or whatever was weak. And maybe I missed something at the end but didn't Joker say the insanity was permanent? How was everyone ok? Maybe I should just watch the ending again.

It was definitely nice to see Shayera Hol and John Stewart to get together.

The Ace insanity story could have used a little more closure.

I especially loved the "Estelle Getty" lady playing slots all by herself and that they followed up on that.

I enjoyed the return of the Joker... he's never been my favorite villian but they did a pretty good job with him this ep. Good fight scenes, again Flash was cool.

Until now, has Hawkgirl been unmasked, ever? Even in the comics? I always thought the feathers were part of her face. But I LOVED the unmasking... totally unexpected for me! I wonder if they'll show her unmasked now regularly, when they're all just hangin' around the hall of Justice. :)

One of the basic problems I have with the Justice League is Supes. They can't seem to get a handle on how powerful he is. The Elastic guy pretty much had him subdued for a good amount of time... he should have broken free instantly. The strong invulnerable guy basically was the same strength as him. And I remember that he nearly got beat up by Wonder Woman in a previous episode. Isn't he supposed to be the most powerful guy in the DC Universe? It bugs me when they make Superman weaker than he should be. Oh, and he should never be bothered by something as mundane as electricity. That knocks him out as easily as kyrptonite (as in "A Better World").

That aside, JL is a great cartoon.

I suppose most of you never watched Batman Beyond. (Damn, I miss that show)

Personally, it was nice to see how the idea of the Royal Flush Gang got started (by the Joker, no less!).

Posted by: Graymalkin

Damn! My TiVo skipped this episode because it had gotten the idea that it had already recorded it within the last 28 days.

Where can I find this online?

Edited to add: Never mind. Found a Web site with screenshots of Hawkgirl without her helmet. Lookin' good.

Except it didn't seem like the Royal Flush Gang as described in Batman Beyond. There Bruce made it sound like it had been around for a very long time (not 50-80 years - the time between JL & BB). Plus BB's Bruce also said (if I remember right) that the gang was comprised of family that married in new members & such. Maybe I'm remembering it all wrong...

No, you're right, the RFG in BB was a family. It's the just the notion that Joker came up with the idea for the Gang that amuses me. Perhaps a future iteration of the RFG -- also assembled by the Joker -- is the group seen in BB?

If I'm not mistaken, the King in the BB era RFG had history with Bruce Wayne's Batman. But I don't remember that King having powers similar to Jack or King of the JL's RFG (the two who, I'm supposing, would be the only viable candidates to become the King as they are white males). Unless there was an intermediate generation. Or the aforementioned second iteration of the team.

Also, perhaps someone can clear this up, but wasn't Batman Beyond roughly 30 years after the final year of the Batman: Animated Series?

(I know it's weird to quote myself but...)

It just occurred to me that the Royal Flush Gang in Batman Beyond were spades. The Justice league version was clubs. Also, I believe the BB versions -- except Ace -- were non-powered, right? (There suits were the origin of their 'abilities, no?).

I'm guessing that the BB era team was a new iteration (rather than being 'the children of' a former team).

I'm still glad the JL writers worked them into continuity.

And who else noticed that the voice cast for Teen Titans did the JL's RFG?

Posted by: WinBear

In the comics, I recall several iterations of the RFG and all of them were spades, not clubs, so this was definitely a new interpretation of the group.

This is a modified version of the original RFG from the comics. That group was Clubs, and the original "Ace of Clubs" was the founder, Amos Fortune. Later, one story had a Fortune-less RFG hook up with the Joker. After that, the original group changed
to Spades, then broke up, and offshoots have sprung up which covered the other suits, and the number cards too.

Another orgin is from the '85 TV cartoon Super Powers Team. Ace recruits four young thieves and turns them into the RFG. In the end, Batman discovers that Ace is working with Darkseid, and he really is the Joker.

At first I didn't care for the episode but it grew on me. The end was worth the wait. Good stuff.

That was a fun one. I had never seen any of the Super Powers Team episodes in the past, so when Boomerang ran them all a couple months ago, I was really surprised to see the RFG.

I *think* that was just supposed to be an indication that the "viewer" is going insane. So they were trying to show just a tiny piece of altered reality that a viewer would be seeing.

I thought the John Stewart/Hawkgirl thing was done well. It could have been really corny, but it wasn't.

When I heard Joker mention that he was immune to Ace's power because he was already insane, I assumed Batman was going to be immune too. That would have been a nice touch.

Yes, absolutely. I really liked that section of the story -- when the Joker turns to all the "couch potatoes" in the audience, and he's really talking to us.

But dammit, now I'm even more in love with Hawkgirl...

Of course, if I were another member of the team, I wouldn't be too thrilled with this development -- will John be watching my back, or only watching Hawkgirl's?

My did also, but I caught it. I think that it was set up as a 1 hour show like they have been doing, but was changed to 2 half hour shows. I don't know of any other reason that tivo thinks that it had already recorded it before. Any one else see this problem?

The entire episode is on alt.binaries.multimedia.cartoons in VCD format. My server shows the post is complete and includes PARs.

What's a PAR?

My DirecTiVo got it fine.

I thought the Joker had some really good lines.

"As much as I'd like to stay and watch the Bat's whoopin'..."

"Really didn't see that one comin'"

There were a few more, but I can't remember them all. Mark Hamill is an awesome voice actor.

A godsend for downloading large multipart binaries. PAR files are the nickname and file extension for redundant PARity files. They can repair/replace a damaged/missing RAR files like magic.

Means there's no risk in taking the time to download it.

Anybody care to fill me in on what happened to GL? I came home last night, with plans on watching both parts (TiVo recorded two parts this week, instead of one 1 hour episode), and found that part 1 had already been deleted.

I got about 15-20 minutes into part 1 on Sunday, so I know the general storyline, but nothing about what happened to GL.

I'm kinda surprised at Hawkgirl's appearance. Seems like she should have had something else "alien" about her, especially on the face.

Posted by: WinBear

Traditionally, Hawkman and Hawkgirl were very human looking Thanagarians and had secret identities on Earth. The wings and helmets come off.

Interesting, though, how so many aliens look like humans.

GL got caught in one of the explosions (while pushing Hawkgirl out of the way). It stopped his heart. Hawkgirl gave him a jump-start with a shock from her mace.

The wings come off?
Didn't know that.
Then are they needed for flight, or do the Thanagarian's just think they look cool?

Parity files. It lets you recreate missing parts of a multi-part file by using SmartPar.

I didn't know that either, but I have noticed that HG flies like Supes and WW and the others -- floating and changing direction at will, rather than like a bird who needs her wings to fly. She rarely flaps those things.

A little research at the unofficial DCU Guide reveals:

quote:
As Hawkwoman Shayera Thal was outfitted as a Thanagarian Wingman. This meant that she had wings and belts based on anti-gravity technology as patterned after Carter Hall's by Paran Katar, the main difference was that the Thanagarian wings were more solid and could be used as a bullet proof barrier if necessary.
