The Hebrew Hammer (on Comedy Central)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm about half-way through this and I think it's great!

It's a blaxploitation movie, but with a Jewish character. Very funny. It was obviously made for theatrical release (lots of cursing that's been bleeped out), but for some reason never made it to the theater.

Posted by: scottjf8

I recorded it and am about to start watching it....

Hope the star isnt as annoying as he was on Friends....

Posted by: mwhip

I can't wait to watch it either. Adam Goldberg is one of my favorite actors. He also delivers one of my favorite lines in a movie "I wanna dance!!"

Posted by: njtaz

I just setup a recording for it. Its airing again tomorrow afternoon. From the description it does sound pretty funny.

Posted by: VinceA

Maybe it was made for the direct to DVD market, hence the reason for the non-Comedy Central friendly dialog.

Posted by: ttyler1999

Actualy, Adam was on The Daily Show last week and said that the movie was going to be shown on Comedy Central, and then it was going to get a theatrical release.

Posted by: sschwart

It's already been shown in a select number of theaters, my friends were singing it's praises. It's also going to be going into general release on the 19th (The first night of hannukah).

I saw that on last night, but my wife wouldn't let me watch it. How can you beat Andy Dick as the evil son of Santa? :)

Posted by: scottjf8

I started watching, but I swear I heard the "k" word in the opening song .. as I absolutely HATE that word, can someone tell me if it's in the movie anywhere else?

It did seem funny, albeit quite offensive, but Adam Goldberg can be funny (he was funny/crazy on Friends.. "seeya pals!")

A few times, but it's bleeped out.

I didn't find the movie offensive at all, btw.

Really? all the stereotypes?

Your parents have all the money in the world, and all they buy you is a spinning top?

You're missing the entire point.

I saw a reference to this in the newspaper yesterday, and forgot to set up a recording. I'll have to check it out, per Turtleboy's recommendation. Luckily, I don't offend too easily.

"He's not bad, he's cha-baad." :)

A friend called to alert me to this last night. He saw a sneak preview of it recently and said it was funny. I TiVo'd it this afternoon.

The "k" word???

Just like that Family Guy episode "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein."

Any other minority or fringe group is fair game for media mockery though.

Yes, because the Jews control Hollywood, right Marlon Brando?

Why would Comedy Central bleep the swear words? I'ts not like they have to or anything.

As a Jew myself, I found this show hillarious. I could see how someone overarlly sensitive can find it offensive, but if you go into the show knowing it's going to be a parody, then you should not feel offended. Basically, they just took every Jewish stereotype and parodied it. The show was written by Jewish people and most of the actors playing the Jewish parts were Jewish, so I had no problem with it. It's like an African-American writing a show that included all of their stereotypes.

As far as the K word, that's Kike, a deroguatory term for a Jew. My understanding is it means "pencil or pen" in Yiddish and when the Jews came to the US, they would ask the Immegration officer for a writing implement and they called it a "kike" so the immegration officers would start calling them kikes.

Comedy Central will run uncensored versions of their shows late at night, but tend to bleep out lewd words during prime time since kids could still be watching. They have run the South Park movie numerous times after midnight unbleeped.

They're a basic cable station, which means that they're subject to rules more stringent than those of premium cable channels, but less stringent than those of network channels.

In the past two years or so, they've begun to take risks and air unbleeped content that would normally have to be bleeped; however, they do it only sometimes, and pretty infrequently at that. I think part of it may be testing the limits of the censors, trying to get them used to the idea. Or maybe the rules allow for a yearly maximum number of bleeping "slips", and they're just taking advantage of that loophole.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that. Those immigration officers must have been busy since they also came up with WOP. Kinda sad that in the land of opportunity the guys guarding the gates are busting the immigrants chops...

Support this movie when it is playing in theaters!

The Hebrew Hammer was made a few years ago but was never able to find a distributer... Now it is being released on Comedy Central first with wide release in theaters on the 19th I believe (Hannukah eve).

I am so excited! Finally, we Jews, get a holiday show of our own!

Posted by: davidmin

That's not what I heard... It comes from the German or Yiddish (I can't remember which) word kikel, or circle. In old Europe, Jews were required to wear circles to distinguish themselves.

edit: a quick search found material on the origin of the word.

Like the episode of South park where they say sh** 100+ times because another show broke the barrier?

 My original point was valid. The easily-offended should probably stay offline. It's so much more safe there.

Or the nine dozen times they've aired the South Park movie totally uncensored?

There are no rules for cable stations. The FCC is only involved with broadcast television. Comedy Central and any other cable station can do whatever they want within the bounds of what their advertisers will support.

Man, there's a reason I didn't WRITE the whole "K" word.. thanks for everyone posting it around here...

I posted it for informational purposes only, and I hope we are all enlightened enough that most readers will realize it's a derogatory word and it shouldn't be used to refer to any ethnic group, the same that the N* word should be used to discribe blacks or the W* word for Italians and the M* word for Irish. The people who use that word will probably still use it whether it's posted here or not. I feel comfortable enough in my ethnicity that it doesn't bother me when the word is used in such context.
