The Simple Life 12/9

Just wanted to start a new thread ... by date!

My TiVo didn't record the last few minutes of it....It cut off right as they were about to jump out of bed and swat flies? Right after they got in from the club....details?

Yeah mine did the same. I set up padding on the SP so that doesn't happen again.

Loved it again. Can't wait for the head of the household to really lay into them -- they don't seem to know how to stop screwing up.

Posted by: uncdrew

I laughed out loud hard at the gym during the onion ring and marquee scenes.

Posted by: DancnDude

I liked when their boss gave them a check...
"What do we do with this?"
"Cash it and get money"
"Where?"
"Uhh....a bank"

That's because they're a pair of spoiled brats.
I also laughed at the costume sequence though.

So, does Paris wear panties?

Nicole got a fly swatter and ran around the room chasing the fly while Paris laughed. That was it. You probably missed all of ten seconds.

They really weren't screwing up. They just don't care to do what they're told if it's not fun. They have as much self-discipline as the average 14 year old.

I want to know why there is one Paris Hilton and 4 billion guys on earth.

Nicole Richie is cool too, I love Lionel's music.

This show is truly fantastic, but 22 minutes per week is such a tease, I need more of The Simple Life!

I'm enjoying the show a lot too. But don't get too attached to it. I read that it was originally supposed to be a summer run series and only last six episodes. I'm not sure if that will change based on the ratings it has gotten, but stranger things have happened.

Posted by: TeeSee

Six episodes or six weeks? There were two episodes in it's debut week, and my guide data shows two episodes for next week (Tuesday and Wednesday). If it's six episodes then it should be ending very soon.

Posted by: Spire

I read somewhere that there were seven episodes in all, meaning there are four unaired ones left.

Edit: Yep. Last one is on January 6, 2004.

Posted by: adelimon

I think one of the most striking things about this show is that no one kisses their asses. Not that anyone in America knew Nicole Richie from a hole in the wall before this show, but a lost of people had certainly heard of Paris Hilton.

It's probably safe to say a good portion of those bumkins probably don't know who they are, not that it matters.

Something else I noticed last night...how much did the larger woman at the Sonic hate them? I mean you could just see the look of disgust on her face everytime she had to deal with them.

Posted by: Redstixxx

I noticed that during their day at Sonic Paris changed clothes about 3 or 4 times. She had on high heels with skirt, then skates, then pants with tennis shoes, then the milkshake costumes. How much work could they have gotten done with all the wardrobe changes?

Posted by: pmyers

I loved when they asked if it was 3pm yet....it wasn't even 10am ;)

Posted by: Steveknj

Actually, and maybe I'm in the minority, but I didn't like last night's show. The problem I'm finding is that it seems they just don't give a crap, and nobody is laying into them yet. And I find it hard to believe that everything these girls are doing is an act. It seems to me like the producer tells them, ok, just act as outrageous as possible without being totally lewd and they go and do it. It seems a bit too contrived. If I was their boss at Sonic, after they put up that sign, I would have fired their sorry A$$ and if I they were guests in MY house and they didn't clean up after themselves, they'd be out in the street. Maybe down the road they will get their come uppance, but right now, they are basically getting away with everything and thinking, they'll do their 5 weeks, and get HUGE name recognition, which is all they are really after.

Another episoe like this and I'm done with this. It has gotten old quick

Posted by: daperlman

1/2 price anal wiener burgers....
I thought it was really funny how they were hitting on every customer at sonic and then went shopping dressed as shakes.

I bet the net effect of their high jinks was more customers for sonic.

Posted by: mwhip

I don't know if either on one of them has a job at all. Paris may still do some modeling, Nicole is getting paid for singing?

The reason I ask is I want to be their accountant when they call the girls and say "Did you receive your W-2 from Sonic"?

If their accountants leave it out that could trigger an audit. Now there is a reality show with these girls I would love to see.

Posted by: dschwab

Steveknj, I'm kind of with you. I found last night's ep pretty funny, but the act is wearing thin on me. It's very obvious that these girls are putting on a show for the camera and are taking advantage of people because they can. I would have loved to see one of those Sonic employees rip them a new one. Those people are working there because they need the money, and these 2 girls come in and make a mockery of the place.

Oh, and the comment about the check from Sonic actually made the Sonic manager look foolish to me as well. You can't just walk into any bank and cash a check unless you either have an account there or the check is being drawn against an account at that bank.

Not sure how big the town is, but there may only be one bank.

Paris's sister Nicky actually runs a successful clothing label. I am sure Paris has gotten token work there before.

Posted by: uncdrew

Yes, it is quite disgusting that they've become "adults" without knowing so many basic things about life.

They really are dingbats.

I thought the "larger" women were disgusted by them because their sloppy work resulted in additional work for the regulars, not because they were envious of them.

But then again, women do get that way at times I suppose.

Posted by: nataylor

I find it very amusing they couldn't spell "boogers" but they could spell "wieners." I guess they should stick to what they know. :)

No, Paris was laying out the letters "BUGGER" and said "there, booger, right?" To which Nicole said "yeah, that's right, booger."

Posted by: quarkman97

I agree with Steveknj on this one.

The question I posed during the episode last night:

Would this show be worth watching if they performed every job/task sufficiently and were successful at it? No goofing off, no joking around....do you think it would sell viewers? I can't pick a side on this one.

I wholeheartedly agree that it is disrespectful of them to display their behavior like they do at their "jobs." It reinforces the "rich girl" stereotype and, IMHO, lowers my respect (not that it was that high to begin with) for them. Who knows, maybe they will shape up as the season progresses and actually complete a task without goofing off. And then we will all say "aww look, they learned their lesson. Look how they learned about hard work."

In addition, it shows the head of the household find out about all the goofing off they are doing on all their jobs and we "wait" for him to lay into them, but all he really says is "it reflects poorly on me and my family...." I think if he really laid into them, they might go running off into the sunset and the show would be over.

I think they really ham it up for the camera. Who doesn't know what generic means?

I also fell into the boat where it cut off before I saw the rest of the episode. Did they show any teasers for the next episode? Or was it more footage of those two slobbering and making out with random guys and goofing off?

Posted by: pmyers

And what ever happaned to the father catching them sneaking out that night with the truck?

People who don't shop for their own food and what shopping they do is in New York boutiques where generic is not a term thrown around much.

Posted by: quarkman97

Even with that "way of life" I find it hard to believe they don't know what it meant.

Think about how you learned about that word...then think about the world these girls live in.....I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't know what that word meant.

Posted by: quarkman97

Still not convinced.

Wal-mart was one thing, but this....

Posted by: mp2526

I have been amazed by how many times I have thought something common knowledge and one of my friends have no idea what I'm talking about. It's mainly due to our different backgrounds. While she could have been hamming it up, I still don't have a hard time believing she might not have known. Just think when would she have ever come across the term? I discovered what generic ment as a little kid shopping with my mom in the grocery store when you went down the isle with all the food in the black and white packaging. I doubt her family does their own grocery shopping, she probably has never set foot in a discount retail chain. I bet most of her friends are the same, so in my opinion its not too far a stretch.

Posted by: Steveknj

Also, am I crazy or did the girls in Sonic SOMETIMES where pants, and other times wear short skirts? It looked random to me, like the editing was bad.

It could be possible that they didn't know what these terms meant, but don't they EVER read a newspaper or magazine, watch TV or radio? If they don't that makes them just dumb and ignorant. By osmosis you'd pick up some of the terms that they supposedly had no clue about. That's why I find this whole thing a huge publicity stunt for Fox and Hilton/Ritchie. Notice how they are going to be on the Billboard awards tonight, and that is their main selling point for this show? Ummm....shouldn't the MUSIC be the selling point?

Like I said, I give this one more episode and if these girls STILL get away with this crap, I am going to stop watching. It is beginning to insult my intelligence.

Well, me being a former restaurant manager, my initial read would have been that they haven't had a job (from the paperwork process) and therefore would have gone a little easy on them. The fat little b1tch of a manager that they had didn't train them one bit. (At least it wasn't shown if she did) Unacceptable and inexcusable as a manager.

For all of their (Paris and Nicole) ignorance, what do you expect them to do? Succeed? My guess is that the producers are telling the people who are their "boss" to keep changing jobs on them so that they don't get comfortable or good and can be made to look like they're goofing off. If I were given the tasks that they were, I would have dicked with the sign too because I would have figured out I'm getting my chain yanked. Now... They may be a tad bit ignorant when it comes to "jobs" but my guess is that their BS meter is highly refined and in tune. If I was them and the producers were messing with me the way that they are, I'd treat everything as a joke too...

Posted by: pmyers

/agree!

they aren't suppose to succeed at these jobs.

Posted by: quarkman97

...so would that mean that they are laughing at us laughing at them?

Posted by: nataylor

And what's with them making $7/hr at Sonic? When I worked in fast food, we got minimum wage!

A few years back there was a labor shortage that hit a lot of fast food businesses that caused them to react by paying above minimum wage. I remember seeing a few Taco Bell advertising a starting wage of $9 an hour. The current economy has changed that to some degree, but being in the IT industry, I know several former co-workers and friends who wouldn't work at a fast food restuarant despite being unemployeed for close to a year. I'm sure they still have to attract employees with higher wages, now that the baby boomers and the baby boomers kids are starting to age past their primary employment target group.

More than the show, this thread is starting to disgust me. The people who worked at Sonic hated them because they made their jobs harder, not because the girls were skinnier. And women, at least the women I know, DON'T get that way sometimes. And yes, we're by and large larger than Paris and Nicole. You're insulting my intelligence by suggesting that women are nasty to skinny women.

Not sure how big the town is, but there may only be one bank.

Here's the thing, pointless as it may have been, that annoyed me during the show last night. They show the population of the town as 800-something. But there is no WAY that bar was in that small a town. Nor was the Sonic probably there, or the store... I get the feeling we're being yanked around as viewers a little bit. Like I said, that really shouldn't make a difference, but for some reason it did. Perhaps because small, rural farm communities are getting misrepresented, yet again.

All I know is that I grew up for the most part in two communities-one less than 800 and one just slightly more than 800, and we'd have to drive MILES for some of the things I saw in this episode. (Although not the quilting circle. That we would have had. :))

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

quote:

Yeah, that rubbed me a little wrong too, not because making $7/hour at a fast food place is unheard of, but because if the community was that small, the local kids would be fighting HARD for those jobs and they wouldn't even think of paying more than, say, $6 an hour. The economy is just much different here in the sticks.

I've lived in a few very small West Texas towns myself, and we had a Sonic and a decent sized grocery store like the one they showed. Not sure where you are from, but Sonics are fairly common in the south/southwest. As far as the club they were at, I thought they drove to a nearby town to get there. I could have sworn seeing a sign or something saying so.

Posted by: MitchO

If you were 17 would you rather work in fast food or in a Blockbuster? I know i reeked of Roy Rogers after a shift on the grill. That's probably part of it.

I've also noticed that, in my town at least, the dumbest of the dumb seem to be in the video stores ... the fast food employees are actually intelligent in comparison. The slightly higher salary probably explains it, as does the fact that i've noticed more adult part timers and retirees.

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

We were discussing it last night, and I think in my experience, the largest town I can remember having a Sonic was around 1,500 or so. Probably more. This is in Kansas, mind you, where Sonics are popular...but they may do things differently in the south.

(And thanks a lot, now I'm craving Sonic and we don't have 'em here in this part of Illannoy. :D)

Altus isn't too far from Fort Smith. It's also right near I-40, so I bet there's civilization nearby, if not in town.

$7 seems to be a typical fast food wage these days. Even more in some places. When I worked fast food, I made a little more than minimum wage... Of course, that long ago, minimum wage was less than what it is today.

I wasn't suggesting that was the reason they were being nasty to them...or at least I didn't intend to. I was describing the one woman who was particularly annoyed iwth them, that's all.

I personally think both of them could stand to eat at Sonic for a few weeks. Especially Paris.

46 miles according to the same program that you use.
Paris could make the drive in 40-50 minutes easy.....

I'm not sure I buy that. Quite frankly, how hard were any of the jobs that they were given?

BTW, their antics on the show are perfectly in line with some of the reports of the antics that Paris and her sister Nicky (the one on the phone) have pulled in the past.

I agree, the act is getting old. It's obvious that the girls, their employers, and the family are all playing to the camera. The Sonic employees weren't the best actors, and it showed. I'm sure the whole work day was planned out by the producers beforehand, both at the farm and at Sonic. It's still funny so far, but the more scripted/acted feeling scenes kind of fall flat for me.

Posted by: pmyers

that and the girls know they get a new job everyday (Paris told her sister that on the phone conversation) so what incentive do they have to do a good job?

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

A few bits of trivia one of my roommates heard on the radio while an interview was being done with the mayor of the town of Altus yesterday:

-The girls broke the onion ring machine, and the producers had to pay for a new one.
-The milk they were bottling was never intended to be sold.
-The dairy farmer didn't know that they'd filled the bottles with water until he saw the show last week.
-Local residents knew they were being painted in a somewhat unflattering light, but didn't really care.
-Apparently, I was wrong-the Sonic is in Altus.
-There wasn't really a big thing about the girls being in town, other than some of the older women getting really peeved about their outfits.

Posted by: jcd0312

A couple of things came to mind when I first watched it the other night:

1) They should have taken away their makeup and all of their designer clothes when they got into town. They could have been issued clothes "that them rural type people wear" and used the money they made to buy whatever they wanted (alcohol, makeup from WalMart, etc). It would have been hilarious to see them whine about it.

2) I would have also liked to have seen their pay get docked for at least "some" of the f'ing off that they did. Certainly, they could have docked them for some of the stuff that they wasted, if not the whole onion ring machine.

I wondered how they got paid $56 too. Weren't they late to work and they still got off at 3:00? I assume that there was probably a lunch break in there somewhere too. Also, was that after taxes? If so, they were getting paid even more than $7 per hour.

Posted by: mp2526

My girlfriend was reading an article in one of her magazines (In Touch, Us, or something like that), were they interviewed Paris (I asked her to save me the issue so I could read it myself, but haven't seen it yet)

Apparently, according to Paris, this show is very much contrived by the producers. Paris said she really just wanted to dress much like everyone else and try and live life like they would, but the producers egged them on and told them to act crazy and to dress the way they did.

She also admitted to knowing what Walmart is and that she actually thinks they are cool, because you can buy clothes there so cheap.

So taking this into consideration, I'm guessing she does know what generic means.

However, I still think that is not too much of a stretch to believe someone like Paris might not know what the word meant.

Perhaps it's just me, but I thought it was pretty obvious the checks we saw were symbolic. Kinda like miniature versions of the gigantic ones you get for winning tournaments and such.

Well if the dairy farmer didn't get any complaints, I'd say the Paris and Nicole's formula for milk just cuts his costs in half.

I'm pretty certain, processed milk has a percentage of water added to it anyways (I mean other than what is in it naturally)

Posted by: quarkman97

Glad I stuck to my guns with the generic thing.

I'm sure if she knows what Wal-mart is and "thinks it is cool because you can buy clothes there for cheap..." she most definitely would know what generic means.

The word cheap and the word generic are pretty much synonymous, IMHO.

Ok, I'm done talking about generic!

Posted by: dschwab

One of the entertainment "news" shows says that Paris is in talks to do another season of this show. A "sequel" might be interesting if it were someone else, but I'm not convinced they can even make it to the end of this one without viewers getting bored. And now that Paris has admitted that the whole thing is contrived even more than I had thought, I'm rapidly losing interest.

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

quote:

Yeah, I thought that too. Although wouldn't it be cool if our paychecks all came like that? Every payday, you could pretend you won a big prize or something. :)

I figured the show was quite contrived after I saw them going to the quilting circle thing. That just screams of "we're trying too hard for something that could be funny on its own." Still, though, I don't want to give the girls too much credit.

Posted by: EchoBravo

I'm having as much fun laughing at the rural "folk" as I am at the stupidity of those two morons, Paris and Nicole. Those girls need some adversity in their lives. As for that town... My Lord, I don't even want to fly over that place.

Posted by: Steveknj

Based on the last few comments about this show being contrived, and that the last episode was just plain stupid, I have watched my last Simple Life. I REALLY believe that us, the audience is being played the fool and I'm not falling for it. Typical Fox programming:

1) Leak sex video to stir up interest for this stupid show
2) Contrive the whole thing to make it look real, but it's so stupid it's become beyond believable
3) Make fun of "dumb" rural folks and even dumber rich folks and insult our intelligence

I think Paris must have a great agent because this no-talent bimbo has been getting more press than the war in Iraq or the Economy or anything we should REALLY care about. I hope she enjoys her 15 minutes of fame, but it won't be at my expense. I feel like I've been had.

Posted by: Frylock

I keep hearing how the show is contrived and Paris hammed it up for the cameras. I really wonder though if she didn't want to come off looking like a fool and exagerated the story...

That didn't strike me as funny at first. Then for some strange reason I got a mental picture of me trying to cram a huge check in my car and trying to deposit it at the bank. Every once in a while it pops back into my head and I can't help but grin. :)

Did you see Happy Gilmore? This very scene was in the movie...

It took me a while to figure out what kept running through my mind when I watched this episode, but I finally did - to me, this was just like a live action Beavis & Butthead episode. Everything from the marquee to the onion rings to the flipping people off in the costumes could have been B&B.

Anyone else get this vibe (then or now)?
