TiVo to DVD-R hard drive

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Help! We are interested in buying the Panasonic DMR-E80, or other DVD recorder with hard drive. Can we transfer from the TiVo hard drive to the external DVD hard drive? If so, how quickly does this dub?

Also, if we buy a DVD recorder without a hard drive how quickly will we be able to dub from the TiVo?

In either case you'll be stuck capturing the recording from the TiVo to the DVD device in realtime. Not only that but it will require the full use of your TiVo, so you wont be able to watch anything else via the TiVo while it's dubbing.

The only way to do a true digital dub that can happen in faster then realtime and not tie up your TiVo is to get one of the new Pioneer TiVo/DVD-RW units.

Dan - I read from another thread that someone has their DVD-R hooked up to the second outputs, and just plays what they want to record to the DVD to avoid "locking" up the TiVo. Does this sound like a feasible way transfer programs from TiVo to DVD and at the same time to allow your TiVo to continue recording?

Any TiVo will keep recording while you play the material you want to copy to the DVD. Dan meant that you wouldn't be able to watch anything (else) on the TiVo while the transfer is in progress.

Has anyone heard of plans to make a similar unit to the Pioneer however with DVD+RW??

A DVD+RW with Tivo?

Any other thoughts?

Nobody has announced plans for a DVD+RW TiVo. That doesn't mean that such a product would never appear. Given that Pioneer sells dual-format PC drives, I could imagine that some future generation of the Pioneer box might do +RW.

I use a Philips DVDR985 (+RW) with my DTiVo and it works fine - very easy to use and picture quality is excellent.

While I have not heard of any plans to make this type of device, it seems the next logical step in the evolution of TiVo-capable units. Th International Consumer Electronics Show is going to take place in about three weeks and that is where all the electronics manufacturers show the things they are working on and what will be available over the next year. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see something like this shown at CES. If you can't wait and have to have something now, you'll have to be content with what is on the market. If you are simply asking and don't mind waiting a few months, my guess is there will be more options available by mid '04. Pure speculation though...we'll all know more after CES.
