Wassup with forum searches?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I tried to find this thread that I started:

http://www.avsforum.com/ubbtivo/Forum1/HTML/005735.html

...so I typed in "pads" (to search in subject only,) for posts by "Fofer," looking in the The Coffee House, and it came up with nothing. Zilch.

Yet the thread exists, as you can see, I had to look in my e-mail client for response alerts to track it down. So what gives?

The search mechanism is pretty useless if it doesn't work with some level of consistency. Curious to know if the server upgrade will improve this, or is it a limitation of the UBB software.

While I'm on the subject, I'd like to be able to search "all" forums. Having it default to the DirecTiVo forum is sort of a pain.

Thanks!

A few months ago I asked Richard about the possibility of searching all the forums, and he said the equipment did not have the capacity to do this with the heavy traffic at the present time.

By the way, how do you set up to have email notification? I primarily use Netscape 4.7, although I have a later version and also have Internet Explorer which I rarely use.

When you post, there's a checkbox under "Options" for Email notification.

Stevel,

Thanks. I will try it with this post.

If the current server can't handle searches the search page should mention this. I spent a good 20 minutes thinking my search phrases were off.
Also curious to know if the server (and the money drive) will accomodate searches in the future.

In reality, the software is what's causing the searching problem. UBB is absolutely, amazingly, terribly inefficient when it comes to searching. In a properly-designed, database-driven system, searches would be little more load on the system than a normal page view.

I know a decent amount about the software. I don't know how often David (or the moderators) update the search index, but on my forums, I try and update it at least once a day. When you move threads around, edit, whatever, that does not help the index at all.

I find they work better when someone updates the search index.

I just did a search on my name to find a post I made back in October 2000... and the search results were largely from this year alone. This, despite me not limiting the search to any time period in particular.

So, what's the scoop here? Is the search mechanism just not functional or exceptionally lazy?

See this thread to donate toward the new server:

David has said the forum is growing too large for the software and hardware to handle. We gathered quite a bit and David is working on getting a new machine. Even $5 will help.

Fofer, I just now now tested. Under my name some searches go back as far as July, 2000, in the Help Center, but I am not sure the search picked up all my posts.

Apparently the Old Forum has been taken out, perhaps to give the other forums more room. I hope this is temporary, because I refer to the Old Forum quite often.

Also, it is my impression that any search will not show more than 200 posts.
