ReplayTv and Tivo S2

This is not a flame thread. I own 3 tivo's. I "rolled" the dice to see if I could get one of those ReplayTv 5040's for $149.00 with 3yrs of service at radio shack.

As luck would have it, mine didn't have the free 3yrs of service. But, it will make a good Xmas gift for the sister.

Some things that I noticed that I liked about th 5040 RTV:

1. built-in Ethernet
2. Progressive video output
3. No huge ass UGLY TVguide logo on the Channel guide. (no matter what version is being used) :)
4. Remote schedule via the net (standard)
5. Remote viewing between RTV units (std)
6. Setup of guide data almost instant. No waiting 4-6hrs.
7. instant upgrade of OS to newest level if you have broadband during the setup phase.

Dislikes:

1. Find/Search. Ouch, painful. you have to spell out and wait for results. As you are spelling in Tivo, the matching titles are appearing on the right side.
2. Slow transition between menu's, moving between Find and the Zones
3. Scheduling/Season pass. Not very intuitive. why would I want to record a program that is a Sunday show the other 6 days of the week?
4. General OS "look and feel" . just isn't as "smooth" as Tivo. But then again being a Tivo user for 3+ years has me spoiled.
5. Can't play MP3's as the "HMO" for the S2 can. Huge minus for me, not for sister.

Replay might have a chance here. ;)

To get a 40 hr tivo to have the basic RTV 40 features it would cost almost another $120-189.00 on top of the $199.00 base sticker price depending if you use a usb-to-ethernet adapter or a usb-to-wireless adapter. The HMO is where the cost really hits.

I also thought that the cooperative scheduling feature was great. Schedule a show for 7pm on Rtv unit 1. It has a conflict. If you have another Rtv unit, it will pass the request to the 2nd or 3rd unit to see if that unit can record the program

Any chance Tivo is hiding a Series 2.2 that has built-in Ethernet and HMO all ready to "go" at no extra charge? :)

If I could just "breed" the RTV and the Tivo Series 2 and come out with the
RTivo Series Gold 2. :D :D
