60 hr Series 2 image

I saw a deal for a 120GB Seagate drive at CompUSA and couldn't pass it up. ($0.50/gig!) Now I'm on a mission to void all kinds of warranties by upgrading my Series 2. :D

Just to be on the safe side I'd like an image for the 60hour model, would someone please point me in the direction where I can find the image?

Thanks a million!

On a side note... why doesn't something like Norton Ghost work for moving my data/recordings from the 60GB to 120GB? Is it the whole problem with Microsoft writing a piece of data on the drive if it touches the Windows OS?

TiVo have just shutdown all the backup sites, so you don't have much chance of finding an image. Just be very careful when making the backup file.

Ah, the 'Ghost question'. Ghost has a disk duplication mode that can be used to clone drives and in that mode it doesn't matter whether it's a PC drive or a TiVo drive that's being cloned. The corruption problem you refer to arises from having a TiVo drive connected while running Windows XP - it corrupts the boot block - Ghost under DOS or Win9x would be OK.

The trouble is, when you think of Ghost, you think of things like partition resizing and other clever tricks. None of those functions work on TiVo drives (Ghost will probably claim the disk is blank).

There is a program that can resize TiVo images and make small backups of large TiVo disks. It's called MFS Tools. See Hinsdale's post at the top.

Are there any brave souls who would be willing to point me to a private FTP server so I can acquire a backup copy of the software I've already bought and paid for?

TiVo, you're being ridiculous by disallowing image sharing. Everyone who would need an image already owns a copy of your software, and are therefore legally entitled to a backup. But few have the capability to create an image (or the foresight to know they would eventually need a fresh image.)

Why not make your own backup prior to doing the upgrade?

My TiVo is full. 60GB is more free space than I have.

Is it possible to get a backup and exclude recordings? I've never done this before, like you couldn't tell ;-)

If you have not already, download and print out a copy of Hinsdale's instructions. They are over 20 pages long, but once you read through them you will find you only need about 3 commands and about a total of half a page of instructions.

If you have a PC with a Fat32 partition one of the commands is to create a backup of that drive onto your PC. If you do not have a PC then I can now understand why you are looking for an image.

Images are still available when needed, just not as obvious as going to a website for a download. If you find yourself in trouble, a post requesting an image is usually followed up by a PM with someone willing to help.

Thanks, I did exactly that and was on my way back to update a post when I saw that you had replied again.

Thanks for your help! I think that Hinsdale doc has all the info I need to create that backup myself. Now I just have to frankenstein my old Windows 2000/Linux box and bring it further back in time to a fat32 file system.

Still if anyone has an image or a filename to help my searches, I'm interested, so feel free to PM me.
