Can not Telnet to Tivo

Tivo 40 HR Model: TCD24004A

I used Hinsdale Instructions and replaced the 40 Gig stock HD with a 120 GB HD. The Tivo boots fine and is functional. I used the Steve Jenkins guide, but can not get the Telnet function to be enabled.

I am using a Netgear Wireless USB adapter that works fine, and I can ping the local IP of the Tivo. I edit the rc.sysint and added line:

tnlited 23 /bin/bash -login &

I verified that it saved 2 times, but when I boot the tivo it will reboot right away, and then give the splash screen to wait a few minutes. If I check the file again, the line above that I added was deleted. I only have partition 7 and not partition 4. I did this 3 times, and still have no luck on enabling Telnet. The tivo no does show 147 HRS. :)

Any ideas on this? I am sure that this is simple, but I just cant get this working.

I am also running version 4.01 on the Tivo.

Anyone have any idea on this? I assume it has something to do with version 4.0?

Yes. The current Series2s do signature and file system checking to reject any modified system files. So the changes you make won't stick.

There are ways around it, but it's fairly difficult. The options are to replace the motherboard ROM with one that doesn't do checking, or to boot off an older certified but vulnerable kernal, use that to take control of the machine, then use two-kernel monte to boot the new 4.0 system.
