I want to upgrade my TiVo Standalone 40 hr Series2 with an 80Gg Hitachi Hard Drive from newegg. Its OEM, I dont know what that means. I've installed a cd-rom and ram into my computer before and thats pretty much all my installation experience. I think I am capable of installing it if I just get some good instructions from experienced people like those on this forum:D . Someone said I could run linux commands(???) on it to get it ready to put in Tivo. How would I do that?
A-Can I do this on my Windows XP PC?
B-Do I need special tools, brackets, software, or cables?
C-I would like to keep costs to a minimum
All help and insight greatly appreciated!

It's all documented in great detail in Hinsdale (see the post at the top). Just follow his instructions and you won't need to understand what the Linux commands mean. Adding the CD to your PC will be useful experience.
Series 2 TiVoes don't seem to like IBM/Hitachi DeskStar drives. I suggest you choose an equivalent drive from a different manufacturer. OEM means you get a hard drive in a stat-bag. 'Retail' means you get a hard drive in a pretty cardboard box with some bits and bobs like screws, cables, may be a utilities disk, etc. The actual hard drive is the same.
Read the warnings about XP at the bottom of Hinsdale. Basically you don't want to have your XP drive plugged into the PC at the same time as your TiVo's A drive. Unless you have a drive with a FAT partition on it handy, you'll have to put a small FAT partition on the new 80Gb drive to write the backup file to.
If you're replacing the original A drive, you just reuse the mounting hardware from that drive. If you want to add the new drive as a B drive, you may need a bracket. Check 9th Tee or WeaKnees to find out which bracket you need for your model.
Torx drivers are handy. If you're adding a B drive, you may need a Y-lead for the power and an IDE cable with three connectors.
The software for the upgrade is MFS Tools, which can be downloaded for free (links in Hinsdale).

Weaknees has reported in some posts that he has had trouble getting IBM/Hitachi drives to work in a TiVo.
Do a search on IBM and you should be able to find some more information about this.
