Can you just jump into "Monk"?

I note that the USA New Year's Day marathon doesn't include the pilot. Would I be able to catch a few epsidoes of the 'thon as a first-time viewer and be fine, or is the show serialized enough that I really need to start from the beginning (a la "The Shield", which I just started with the most recent batch of FX reruns)?

you can just watch it.. you'll pick it up quick.

Monk is highly episodic. I haven't seen many hints of a through-line developing.

Jump in and enjoy.

Definately. I've never seen the pilot. The only question that I have about the series is if the pilot (or any other ep) covered any details of his wife. Everything else is self explanatory.

Jump in with your eyes wide open. It's fun! Tony's great, witty, stellar and it's not just because my name is also Tony. haha

No, you can jump right in. You already know the basic premise.

Agreed with everyone above. I didn't start watching until season 2, and I was immediately hooked. I've never seen any of season 1, and am anxious to catch some of those episodes.

This is a fantastic show, very fun and easy to watch. (Well, except for the Circus one. That had some hard to watch moments.) You'll enjoy it.

You don't need the pilot at all. The relationship with his wife Trudy is explored gradually as the series progresses.

Just jump in and watch. Great show. Looking forward to the next season.

New Years Day is a Monk-a-thon. So you can catch up.

I started with season 2 as well. No problems following it.

Monk was one of those show I heard great things about, but never watched. However, when i did seem to find it on TV, it was always the same episode (The plane episode). I caught that one like 3 times before seeing anything else.

I jumped right in with an episode of Season 2 and was hooked! I was so glad to see the Marathon on the schedule, we are craving more Monk! I think the Season 1 episodes I have seen are not quite as great as the Season 2 but still funny.

The guy is a nut and freaked out by everything.

There you just saw the pilot :D Now go watch!

The pilot is available on DVD, little pricey for a single episode . . .

Well, specifically, in the pilot, he exhibits classic OCD symptoms. As the series progresses, the classic OCD symptoms are gradually replaced with less cohesive weird behavior.

Me too. I just hope it is a longer season than last. Only 9 episodes! Nuts!

The pilot episode is one of the weakest, IMO. Only enough material for a one hour show, really. And twice.....TWICE....they resorted to the cliche
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
where the bad guy escapes through a phalanx of police officers that have him "completely surrounded" and only Monk is smart enough to see him getting away

It's really the second half of the second season that's coming up...USA just scheduled it in an atypical fashion, showing one big chunk of episodes all in a row, then waiting for a few months before showing the second half of the season.

Followed all your advice, and the show's great. Now I have another show to watch...Gee, THANKS. :)

I note there's another marathon coming on 1/16 leading up to the new ep that night. This one does include the pilot.

Here is better price on the pilot episode on DVD http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...29&type=product

It is still a lot for one episode I would wait until they air the pilot again and they will.

While you can just jump in and start watching, be wary of the ever changing Benjy's... I thought there were three that played him, but turns out it's just two - Kane Ritchotte started the role, then Max Morrow took over, and now they are back to the first kid...

Ooo. Thanks for the information on the marathon on the 16th. The significant other messed up taping (yes, no Tivo...I know..:)) the marathon on the 1st so that makes me very happy.

Is this marathon at least going to be in order? Thus far I've only seen one episode of the first season and am dying to catch up.

Before the season premier this Friday (1/16), there is another all day Monk-a-thon.
