Will it always need to be on video mode?

I just received Tivo and in the process of setting it up. I noticed that for the startup to work, the A/V cables need to be plugged into the "Video 1" part of the TV (ie: you have to hit the TV/Video button and be in video mode to see the startup screen). My question is, once it is all set up, to use it (ie: pause TV, etc), will you still need to be in video mode? Is there a way around this? Thanks.

Yes. And why would you need to get around it?

For things like picture in picture

You should still be able to use PIP in video mode; e.g. Tivo on main display, TV tuner for the PIP window (assuming you split the cable from the wall to feed the TV).

But once you have gotten to used to things & just start recording everything on Tivo, you'll probably almost never feel the need to use it. Why watch one show in a tiny window when you can just watch one of the shows later in its entirety? I suppose it could be useful if say 2 games were on at the same time, and you were watching one live & catching up on the other on the Tivo during commercials (using PIP to monitor when the other came back from the break). I used to do that occasionally, until I got the 2nd Tivo and PIP usage dropped from rare to basically never.

But how can you change the channel in the PIP? You can't change it via TV b/c it goes all static since the Tivo has the cable input. And if you change the channel via Tivo, both PIPs change simultaneously???

You have to split the cable before plugging it into the TiVo and run the other leg directly to your TV.
