My 1000th Post - Original News on UPN DirecTV
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: eaadams
I got out the e-mail and phone book and sought out a definitive answer on local channels on DirecTV. At least in Nor-Cal / Valley area. It looks like the rule is that as UPN stations and maybe WB who knows ask DirecTV has Until Jan. 1 2002 to add the station. It had been my understanding that roll out would begin on the first not that it would begin on the first.
Following is the E-mail:
----------------------------------
Dear Evan:
We've wanted that too....and we will be. They have until January 1, 2002
to add us to their lineup.
Sincerely,
Rita Gazitano
Program Director

So that is the 1000th post. I'm going to post this here as the 1000th because the TIVO forum has been an amazing asset over the last year. But I’m gona repost in the DBS forum as an FYI.
Thanks TIVO thanks RB thanks AVS and most importantly thanks to the AVS membership.

The only way I know is to delete the thread and start over.

So, let's bring the thread back on topic. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif
Here's what I got in late June when I queried Atlanta's local UPN station, WUPA 69:
quote:
UPN is currently negotiating with Direct TV to broadcast our signal. We are hoping to have service established by September 2001. But as in any corporate negotiations, this is a timely process and an exact start date has not been established at this time.

I forgot about the all powerful moderators who can do the impossible with ease. Like the cavalry to the rescue. (If we were in the Happy Hour I might say "Calvary.")

I've read that DirecTV just sent up another satalite that will carry some of the load off the main sat. Or something to that effect. Something is up their!

but its not going to launch until late November or December. Also, it wouldn't be operational to Feburary the latest. Unless Directv gets waivers from the FCC, expects pq to go downhill for awhile.

Didn't DirecTV launch a "spot" satellite to be handle <some of> the extra load?
As a Los Angeleno, I'm thinking the next coupla months will be exciting for the couch potato. Dual tuners, and EVERY local channel on DirecTV... we're close now, but still lacking KCOP 13 (UPN.) That'll finally be enough to get me to go for DirecTiVo.
For now, I've been pleased with AT&T Digital Cable. Pre-TiVo it sucked... slow channel changing and moderate artifacts. I switched back to analog... and a few weeks later got TiVo to help me maximize the more limited channel choices. Then recently I re-upgraded to Digital. I guess things have improved in the last few months...t he artifacting seems to be gone. And slow channel changing doesn't bother me anymore, since I rarely channel surf!

Let's see if DirecTV can actually meet the Must Carry deadline. Wouldn't surprise me if there was an extension to the law passed making "must carry" later than 1/1/02.
Hey, I'm as hopeful as the rest of you guys, but if DirecTV can't do by then, then they can't do it. Doesn't matter what the law says.

They just sued the FCC to get the must carry overturned, do you think they want to help them???
