Can I use a 160 GB Drive?

I went down to Best Buy today to pick up a 120 GB drive for my Sony SAT-T60. I have a Best Buy gift card and it is burning a hole in my pocket.

It turns out that they didn't have the WD 120 GB drive I was looking for. However, they have a WD 160 GB drive with a huge rebate. The net cost of the 160 GB drive would be about $90 plus tax :D

So my question is can I use this drive in my SAT-T60? I remember reading something about a 137 GB limit on the drives. Will the new drive work and just not use all of the space? Or will it not work at all?

The drive sounds like a good deal. I'd like to replace the current drive(s) in the Tivo with this one. I'll keep the current drive(s) on the shelf in case my upgrade fails.

Thanks for your help,

Yes you can use it, either as 137GB or, with a little effort, 160GB... read the sticky post at the top of the TiVo Underground forum.

basically you will get to use 137 gigs and the rest will go unrecognized. You can also crank up LBA48 and use it all, but I would stick to the basics the first time around while learning the ropes.....

Thanks for handy information. One last question. Is there any downside to using the lba48 patch? For example, will it prevent further upgrades to the software or chrash when the software is updated by Tivo?

Thanks again,

I just bought the same WD 160 GB drive, but am having trouble making it work. I copied all the info from the original T60 drive and got confirmation that the copy took place. (Congratulations! etc.) However, when I install it in the T60, I only get the welcome screen before it times out. I used the mfstool to do the copy.

I appreciate any thoughts for troubleshooting.

I too bought the 160 GB drive (compusa) with the $80 discount. I'm upgrading from a WD 40Gb drive which is squealing/noisy on a Tivo 2.0 unit. I made the backup using MFS Tools 2.0 and then restored it using the appropriate instructions (thanks Hinsdale). Unfortunately, it behaves very badly.

First problem is that the new drive will get to the "Powerup and then Almost there .. screens. It then hangs giving a black screen .. on my existing 40Gb drive which still works OK fortunately the system screen goes blank for about 10 seconds and then the cute little Tivo startup stream kicks in. This doesn't happen on the 160Gb drive. However, I left the 160Gb drive plugged in and let it sit at the black screen for a while and Tivo did start. However, there was no green background and none of my recordings worked at all. NOTE I have not run mfsadd yet.

Any thoughts? I'm frustrated because I want to get more hours and I want to replace the noisy old 40Gb drive. But it looks like I am stuck.

Make sure the jumper is off since the drive is a master with no slave in the tivo.

Good idea. I'll give it a try. Thx.
