Downloading shows to Computer Hard Drive

Since I can see my hardrive from my computer (music and pictures) on my tivo, it seems ogical that I should be able to watch what's on the hardrive of the tivo on my computer....then burn it on a DVD so I can watch later, on my laptop. I have read the replay tv allows this. Does tivo? And if not, when will it catch up? This seems easy to do, as it works, essentially, in reverse of the photos and music....

ReplayTV doesn't really "allow" it, it's just that some smart users decided to write a program that basically makes their computer emulate another Replay unit so they can copy shows to it.. It's entirely possible that Replay could close that loophole at any time, since content providers (i.e. the networks and Hollywood) aren't too keen on people being able to share digital copies of shows and movies.

It can also be done with Tivo, but it is somewhat more involved than with Replay, and it's also a banned topic here.

Got it -- guess there's too much possibility to share videos over the internet, something I am sure VCR inventers never had to dea with. Would be nice, though. I'll have to search out the back door to that....

I have a Pinnacle Systems USB MovieBox that lets you take an S-Video signal and route it to the computer to record via USB.

This does not, however, allow you to copy a file, so if you have a 2 hour movie, which would be about 800MB or so in MPG compression, you don't get the 2 minute copy - the process would take 2 hours.

search on TiVoToGo on the TiVo boards. This is software demoed by TiVo. This will be available 3rd quarter this year and allow copy of files from tiVo to PC
