failed hd / upgrade problem

Hi,
I recently had all the symptoms of a failing hard disk: stutter, freezup. Before I realized this I to 'clear and delete all'. I then discovered these forums and found out what my real problem was.

Since I was out of warranty anyway, I decided to swap out the drive with a larger one. I powered down while my old drive was stuck on the 'clearing all'. I then used mfstools to make the image backup. That gave a bunch of read errors, but eventually completed, so I thought I'd be ok.

I then restored to a brand new 80 gig drive, and tried to test it. I'm now stuck on 'clearing and deleting all' again with the new drive. It's been about 48 hours or so now.

My question is: will this eventually finish? If not, is there a way to disable the clearing all before I restart it again? What other options might I have?

TIA,
Noah

48-hours is far too long; it sounds like your transfer from the old drive to the new drive was not successful, and that your drive may have been too far gone to get a good backup of the TiVo software. You can try to find someone who can help with the software, but that is becoming increasingly difficult to do.

I am not a expert...but it sound like your OS got corrupted because of a bad drive. If your backup did not work on new drive I am guessing that your backup is also corrupt. Or...you are having other hardware issues.

What model of tivo?

It looks like we typed our replies at the same time. LOL!

Hi weaknees, Piggers,

Thanks for the replies.

It's an older Series 2 60G w/ version 4.0.1. From reading around, it sounded like a classic hard disk failure. I think my major mistake was starting the clear all in the first place. Unfortunately I didn't bother reading through all the similar threads before started swapping out the drives.

I have the Hacking Tivo book/disk, so I can probably get the drives mounted. Is there any chance I can remove the clearing command before I try to reboot? Or am I hosed so far that I have to start looking around for an image?

Noah
