I replaced the drive in my dad's Tivo today

It worked out perfectly. His old drive was dead so I had to find an image to put on the new drive. "Someone" (you know who you are:up: ) was awesome enough to get me an image and it worked out perfectly. His old Sony SVR 2000 30 hour is now a 141 hour Tivo.

As a side note, I'm amazed with how hot these Tivo's run the drives. His old drive was red hot when I pulled it out. Has anyone tried changing the stock 80mm fan to a higher rpm fan? If so was there any improvement in the system and hard drive temps, or just more noise?

Thanks to all here and especially Hinsdale for all the help.

Good news on the upgrade! :)

What temp is TiVo reporting? Higher RPM will likely bring more NOISE.

There are other more passive techniques to assist cooling:

1. Be sure your TiVo can breathe.
2. Raise your TiVo. I put 1" blocks under TiVo's feet
3. Isolate the HOT (exhaust) side from the COOL (intake) side. Many report success by simply placing a rolled-up sheet of paper mid-way beneath TiVo unit
4. Add an external fan to your AV cabinet. I used a small 2" brushless DC fan running @ ~50% rated voltage (=slower) using a discarded AC adapter for power. The fan was placed just behind TiVo on the HOT side and PUSHED air from back to front. Hot-to-touch exhaust side of TiVo is now COOL-to-touch!

Good luck!
