I'm new to Tivo, bought the Series 2 about four months ago. A couple of days ago Tivo started clicking and hanging. Now I must unplug and replug to get it working and it hangs again in an hour or so. I spoke with Tivo support and determinde that the $99 cost to hot swap was not worth it and I'd like to replace the HD with a larger HD. I have two question if someone could help, 1) what's the likeyhood that I will be able to read any of the infomation off the obviously damaged tivo HD? 2) If I can't read the Info how do I get a new image to install on the new store bought HD?

Well the first thing you need to if you suspect your hard drive going out is to try and retrieve the OS off of the drive before it is to late. If you are successful then you can put that backup image on a new drive.

There are companies out there that will do it for you if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. I believe they are at the top of the page.
