I just got a DTiVo from my brother (Philips DSR-6000). DirecTv sent me a new access card, which I have not installed yet. Can I do the hard drive upgrade prior to activating?

You can, but it makes little sense to. After all, you really should get it set up, activated and working first That way you verify it all works first before cracking open the case. Nothing worse than upgrading, finding out it doesn't work (for some reason or other), and not knowing whether it was working before the upgrade or not. Maybe DirecTV sent you a broken access card - rather find that out before starting. Perhaps the hard drive got corrupted and you'll need a restore image before you even begin. Good to find these out first...
