1/6 Celebrity Poker Showdown (spoilers)

Good match tonight.. I hate Creed so I was glad Stapp lost..

I wish they would make SURE people know how to play Poker before this show starts... Carrie was driving me nuts, since she was first to act and would go "can I call??" ... i'm going "who are you gonna call?" to of course, my wife replies "ghostbusters?"

I thought I caught Bravo .. I paused when they showed a preview of the finals to see if I could see who won tonight.. I swear I saw Mimi standing behind Pollak, but it turned out she lost....

And what's with David throwing his Yamulke and yelling "fu*k it" (or was it fu*k off?) - have a little respect, A-hole...

The finals should be good - I think either Nicole Sullivan or Paul Rudd will take it...

I like Creed, but I'm glad he lost too. I can't believe they would let people play that know absolutely NOTHING. He kept thinking he'd won. "Explain to me how I lost, I have a pair", "yes, but they have two pair" or "yes, but they have a flush". Man he was an idiot.
This was the first show where only 1 person even had a clue what they were doing, and naturally that person won. I don't think he would have won any other night though.

Yeah, the occasional question is one thing, but tonight was sad. If I wanted to see play that sloppy, I could do it myself at home.

I wasn't really following the game because I was reading and posting at the same time, so the split pot thing really confused me at first. Eventually I caught on.

Actually, I thought Mimi was the better player - it seemed Cross was a "calling station" - he was going to call every hand every time. Did he ever muck a hand? He got really lucky several times (which, admittedly, you need to do to win), but if Mimi hadn't gone cautious she would have won.

It seems that - with the exception of Rudd, and possibly Nicole, the strongest player has failed to win pretty consistently.

Last night was HARD to watch. My wife got tired of me yelling at the TV ;) C'mon...at least have an idea how to play and know the dang rules, if only so as not to look like a complete moron on TV.

Mime definately was the better player but the problem is that she was playing heads up against a guy who played 99% of his hands (I remember him only mucking one hand) and who called every bet. It's hard to trap or check raise somebody that plays like that.

Posted by: kettledrum

I really like Creed, and was looking forward to this episode, but Scott just kept embarrassing himself over and over again. Pathetic. I don't know if he is just that dumb, or if he was lit up or something! Don't quit your day job Scott (or has he already....I haven't heard anything about Creed in a long time)

I too thought that Mimi was the most knowledgeable player at least, but the conservative play got her in the end.

The one hand where she had something good (I can't remember what is was) and she kept checking it instead of betting or check raising I kept thinking she was doing it on purpose to not take more of their chips. Did anyone else think this?

Posted by: pmyers

What made me mad was that it seemed like all of them (especially kerri and Scott) didn't even seem to want to be there. How hard would it be to find "celebrities" who want to be there and who actually know SOMETHING about poker. This was not the show I wanted to see right before the 2 hour finale.

Posted by: YCantAngieRead

Mimi Rogers seemed a lot better than the hands she kept getting in the end that she'd screw up. I was sitting there wondering if she was just getting tired.

As for Carrie Fischer (Fisher?), I think she was playing dumb. It'd be darned hard to be the daughter of Eddie Fisher and not know how to properly play Texas Hold 'Em. Although, I could be wrong.

And David Cross...that whole "effing" episode is sort of his schtick. I bounce back between thinking he's hillarious and that he's a moron.

And lastly, through the whole thing I kept thinking...man, I'm bad, but why can't I get at a table like this???

Post Script: I never really realized that Phil Gordon was so darned tall. Either that, or everyone else last evening was really short.

Posted by: DreadPirateRob

^ Phil Gordon is 6-8 or 6-9 I believe.

David Cross was great. He makes fun of everything. Even religion. Scott you need to relax on that one...

His best line of the night was at the end. "I want to thank GOD. Since God wanted me to win and God wanted the other to lose!" Classic... Something I always wanted to say if I ever won something like that..

Cross mucked a few times. And folded a few times. He was agressive though. Also realize that we only saw 10 hands... I doubt he bet on all of the other ones... Creed guy was a MORON. When he had A K, and was better after the River, and had NOTHING but A high... What a moron...

I thought the samething. Why book people who know NOTHING about poker! I would think a B or C rated celebrity would be better to watch if they knew what CALL/CHECK meant. Oh well. At least David Cross will make the finals funny. he humor is hit or miss. Half the time it is funny as hell, the other half I just think it was really weak. But the whole throwing off the yamika was great. And his winning speech..

I thought Mimi was the best player, but I think at a certain point, especially when it's not there money involved, they just start doing stupid things.

I thought the show was a little more coherent, at least a few of the times they showed the player's stack count, they weren't a total shock.

What would be wrong in any poker show, to just have a scroll bar, or some onscreen graphics after each hand showing the current stacks.

Of the 25 players I'd say maybe 7 or 8 were good players.

They should of had that guy who played "Lucky" I think his name was John Corbin? play..

For me, at least, it's hard to tell in one hour-long show if a person is a good player or not. I have a feeling there may have been more experienced players than we thought, it just wasn't edited to look that way or there just wasn't enough time. Example: I think Ben Affleck is supposed to be a great player but he really didn't look good in his hour.

I just finished watching this episode and it was painful to watch.

Between clueless players and vulgarity from everyone except, amazingly enough, Tom Green. How sad when he was the best behaved player. Mimi and Carrie flipping the bird at each other, Scott and David getting bleeped several times - all that might have been easier to take had the poker been more entertaining.

Should be interesting next week. It's got to be more interesting than this weeks.

It's amazing to me how badly the producers have done with a great concept. The other eps have been watchable, but disappointing. Last night just plain sucked.

Did anyone notice how Pollack's mak-up was messed up after burying his face in Carrie's shoulder when he welcomed her to the lounge? He looked like a monster. Stapp even said something. They didn't show a close-up of the left side of his face for the rest of that segment - bizarre.

I've said this once before, but it bears repeating....
- get rid of pollack, keep tall phil
- get rid of the play-by-play guy standing at the table (at least don't show him on TV)
- show more hands (try editing them so a hand doesn't take 5 minutes).
- make sure the celebs know the rules BEFORE taping the show
- cut back on the loser's lounge (so dull)

Posted by: scooterboy

I'm psyched David Cross won! He was down to $1000 at one point!

Stapp was SUCH an idiot.

Posted by: DreadPirateRob

On the bright side - Pollack does a very good Christopher Walken imitation. Maybe next season they could get Pollack, Jay Mohr (who also does a wicked one), Chris Walken himself, and two other Walken imitators and have a Walken Wing episode!

Sometimes I crack myself up. ;)

Just watched it. Worst 30 minutes of TV i've ever seen. Just bloody awful.

Affleck played well, but it's hard to beat a guy (Garson) who calls everything and draws really lucky turns and rivers.

I was really disappointed with the fact that they had players who obviously didn't even know the rules of poker this time. Is it really that hard to find 25 celebrities that know how to play the game, and are willing to play a couple hours of poker for charity and publicity?

I thought Mimi knew how to play the game, she and David were obviously the only two that seemed to have a clue. I was pulling for her, but she just refused to play, and tossed him pot after pot.

Oh.. and pet peeve. Can't they get that announcer at the table dude to pronounce names correctly? I was correcting his pronouciation of 'Mimi' the entire episode.

Posted by: ireland967

Stapp was a bit rude at times, he could've kept his mouth shut and accept the fact that the dealer and announcer know a bit more about poker than he does. He seemed to say "how did I lose that" more than once.

I thought Mimi was the best player, but she seemed to lose her finesse towards the end. Alot of folds midway thru the game after she had put in a few K's.

Cross is a damn funny guy, and made a long, drawn-out episode worth the watch.

The producers definitely need to get tweaking on this show, so many points they can throw out, particularly after they lose and have that 30-second walk to the losers lounge, then chat about nothing for a minute or two.

Posted by: fmowry

I agree with everything sschwart pointed out. That "Mimmeee" pronunciation was driving me friggin crazy. This was by far the worst of the series so far. While Mimi seemed to have a clue, she wasn't much of a player either once it got down to the one on one. I don't know if Cross really knew what he was doing or he just likes to BS and turned it into his card playing personna. He must have stolen $10K worth of chips from Mimi in the last 5 hands.

I think Stapp is just an idiot who can't count.

Where's Ed Norton and Matt Damon? I thought both of them spent a lot of time learning poker for Rounders and that they're both gambling fans.

Another vote for this being the worst episode. Stapp was embarrassing to watch. I thought it would be good to see Mimi and Cross play but then she kept folding. I thought maybe she just didn't want to play anymore or go to the next round so she just folded on out. Doesn't the guy who won in the first show look a lot like Cross?

Holy crap, you aren't kidding. It was driving me insane-I meant to mention it earlier. You'd think someone would slip him a hint at some point that he'd turned into the most annoying announcer ever.

All great suggestions, let me offer one of my own
- If they are going to insist on showing us the losers, let each loser pick one of the remaining players to "bet" on to win. If that person wins, than the celebrities that bet on that player win some more for their charity. At least then they will have a rooting interest while in the loser's lounge.

P.S. I really like hearing Phil's comments (and seeing if I agree with him). It's especially good when he's brutally honest/funny in criticizing the celebrity's playing style.

Posted by: pmyers

I like when Phil brings in a reference about the celebrity, like when he said Carri needed help from Obi

Posted by: smak

Phil's been good. I find most of the really top poker players like Helmuth, Gordon & Lederer also excellent commentators. It's the "professional" announcers that usually drive me up the wall.

Gordon has been pretty honest, which I don't think everybody would be when it's celebrities playing. I can remember him calling somebody's call horrible more than once.

If you didn't know, the finals is 2 hours, so maybe we'll see if 2 hours is better for this format.

Oh good. I'm looking forward to two hours instead of just one. It feels so...stilted with only an hour.

Couple of comments:

-- Being a David Cross fan-boy, seeing him win made my day. Now, if Hank Azaria had won, we'd have a final table to end all final tables...

-- Previous comment on Cross almost never mucking: they show so few hands out of the entire game that he might have mucked 50% of the time and we wouldn't know it. Early on, after he lost those two big hands, I think he kind of went on autopilot -- based on the chip counts, I'm guessing he just stayed out a lot for a while.

-- JC on a Stick, I wanted to bitch-slap Stapp. I mean, I knew he was a pretentious ashhole of a musician, but geez...

-- I think my favorite moment was when Pollack apparently zoned out for a minute and congratulated Green on his successful love life. The shot of Green sitting there, pained expression, saying "Yeah, it's just wonderful..." -- gotta love that.

-- Carrie Fisher = modern-day "Old Hollywood". I mean, she has the "faded silent movie star" aura down pat.

I enjoyed this one also, and have actually re-instituted my season pass. The final should be good. When does WPT start back up???

I've liked David Cross ever since his Just Shoot Me appearances--great stuff!!

I'd forgotten about this until that episode of Just Shoot Me was on last night. It's one of my favorites from that series, and I'd forgotten how much I liked him in the role.
