OTA Signal

From what we know, am I correct that the HD DirecTivo will NOT record SD over the air signals. This would have been a great fix for many people I know that can't get their locals off the bird. Would solve a lot of Tivo "movers" problems.

Is this correct...no recording of SD over the air signals.

The HDTiVo is suppose to be able to record any ATSC OTA signal, whether HD or just plain digital. You won't be able to record any analog stations (same as with the current DTiVos).

kkollins,
Your profile says that you are in Chicago... All of Chicago's OTA channels are now broadcasting on their digital frequencies... So yes, you would be able to get ALL of the Chicago Locals on your HD-Tivo via OTA in addition to the signal from DirecTV.

But if you are asking for another Demographic......

As pkscout said, it won't be able to record the analog version of the channels as the HD-Tivo will not have an encoding chipset.

Thanks guys...that's what I figured...I was asking for someone that lives in an area that doesn't have all of their networks up on the digital frequencies. Ebonovic...quick question...I live in Naperville....37 miles from the city...I think I saw in one of your posts that you use the Radio Shack 120 OTA antenna...I can't find that model....is it the 120" antenna? I want to get my antenna up so I can drop my HDTivo in the day it comes out. This seems to be the one I hear everyone talking about.

We are just about the same distance away from the City.
I am in Will County - Tinley Park; I-80 and RT-45

I am using the
RadioShack VU-120 XR with the Attic Mount Kit

I also payed the ~$5 for the 2 yr warranty on it, mostly because I wanted to cover my self if I "bent" one of the pieces during installation.

I am getting over 90% signall on all the UHF stations, a good 75% on CBS which results in a few drop outs, but nothing major.

You will find a lot of info about that antenna and others in the avsforum, local reception. Look for a thread about WBBM, it was long, but had some really good info on antenna pointing in Chicago.

You have to be carefull with your nomenclature there.

The HD DirecTiVo will record HD OTA ATSC programming and SD OTA ATSC programming, but will not record NTSC programming. (SD != NTSC)

SD = Standard Definition digital signal
HD = High Definition digital signal
NTSC = regular analog signal

Good clarification, Joe.

Just take "HD" out of the equation, and realize that the HD Tivo will record all "digital" signals coming OTA, HD or otherwise.

Let me get this straight, I get (ok will be getting in 2 weeks) HD via Comcast, but everything else from Directv. Are you saying that I can take the HD signal from Comcast and will be able to record it on a HDTivo? If so, that's great!

NO!, only from an OTA signal plugged into the HDTivo and of course the DirecTV Feeds.

You can not plug cable into a DirecTivo unit because Directv is in competition with cable if you haven't heard and they would never support cable in any way.

It doesn't have anything to do with the competition, it has to do with the standards. OTA HD is in ATSC, which the HDTiVo can store and decode. Cable uses a different standard (whose acronym escapes me right now) *and* they encrypt it on top of that so that you have to use one of their decoder boxes. That's what the OpenCable stuff is suppose to address. You buy a box (presumably a TiVo) built to the OpenCable standard and your cable company provides you a decoder card for the box to decode the encrypted signal.
