Turner Broadcasting To Launch High-Def, High-Drama TNT Network in May 2004

Broadest Range of Dramatic Program in HDTV Format to
Include Series, Sports, Movies and Originals

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) is taking Turner Network Television (TNT), one of television's leaders in delivery of adults 18-49 and 25-54 in prime and total day, into the HDTV arena with the launch of TNT-HD in May 2004, it was announced today by Mark Lazarus, president of Turner Entertainment Group. The HDTV simulcast of TNT will offer viewers the broadest range of dramatic programming in HDTV format ever assembled, including series, sports, movies and TNT Originals.
“With the launch of TNT-HD, we are sending television into a new dimension,” said Lazarus. “Top-rated TNT has an incredible array of successful dramatic programming – from Law & Order and NBA coverage to award-winning TNT Originals and blockbuster movies – giving the network an unprecedented combination of programming that is ideally suited to the HDTV format. TNT-HD means more than just high-def. It means high drama.”
“Over the years, Turner Broadcasting has offered multiple high-tech initiatives, including VOD, broadband and HDTV, always pushing to expand the scope of its activities in the new technology sector,” said Andrew Heller, president of domestic distribution for TBS, Inc. “The HDTV platform adds value for our distribution partners and our customers by offering them the kind of high-profile, dramatic programming that has made TNT a television leader in an environment that heralds the future of television.”
In February 2003, TBS, Inc. tapped into the HDTV market by offering TNT’s coverage of the NBA All-Star Game in high-definition. The company will repeat that success with the NBA All-Star Game in February 2004, leading up to the May launch of TNT-HD during TNT’s coverage of the NBA Western Conference Finals.
Among TNT-HD’s other HDTV offerings will be the network’s eagerly anticipated dramatic series The Grid, starring Dylan McDermott (The Practice, Wonderland) and Julianna Margulies (ER, Evelyn), set to premiere in summer 2004. The series from TNT and the BBC, produced in conjunction with Fox Television Studios and Carnival Films, explores both sides of the escalating war on terror. Additional programming to be offered in HDTV will be announced at a later date.
For 2003, TNT placed #1 for ad-supported cable among adults 18-49 and 25-54 in both prime and total day, as well as among households and persons 2+ in prime.
Turner Network Television (TNT), the destination for drama, is a Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. 24-hour advertiser-supported service. TNT, an industry leader in delivery of adults 18-49 and 25-54 in prime and total day, is cable’s only network combining award-winning original films; broadcast premieres; powerful one-hour dramas, such as Law & Order, ER, NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Charmed, Judging Amy and Angel, with Without a Trace joining in fall of 2004; and championship sports coverage including NASCAR, the PGA and the British Open and the NBA.
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, is a major producer of news and entertainment product around the world and a leading provider of programming for the television industry.

And DirecTV said it would be available ?????????

TNT?

They mostly rebroadcast old shows. Which means a lot of upconverted 480i. What a waste of bandwidth.

Well, I think the appeal will be to basketball fans. This should mean that their NBA games will be broadcast in high definition.

WOOO HOOOOO!!! I thought I'd have to subscribe to NBA League Pass again to get HD basketball. Hopefully DTV announces soon that they'll be picking this up.

Even though TNT does show a lot of rebroadcasts, it at least shows that the market is starting pick up for HDTV.

With Fox going HDTV by the Fall 2004, we could see even more companies jump on and get their programming in HD...

Now only to get the Playboy HD from VOOM to DTV ...

Why do you need Playboy in HDTV.....I thought you only watch your porn 5 minutes at a time.

Fox is going HD in the fall? I thought the announcement said it would be a matter of weeks? I guess the agreement would be reached in a matter of weeks and it will take until the fall to receive the HD channel.

Why would TNT go HD if they didn't already know someone would pick it up?

That's what I thought when I read the post a few days back... This release has nothing to do with DirecTV.

Would this mean some NASCAR in HiDef??

I would imagine TNT will be very diligent to be getting HD copies of all the movies they show since their sister net HBO is already using them.

Uh, why did the OP put the release here? There is no indication DirecTV will offer TNT-HD any more than they will offer the VOOM channels.

Two different things. Fox HD is going to be available via directv within the next few weeks, but Fox is not true HD, it's ED.

Fox will be true HD this fall.

ED? I assume its still better than current. It doesnt take long to get spoiled with HD compared to regular directv channels. It like when I first went from cable to directv 6 years ago.

Now we get to see 80 minute cuts of 2 hour movies spread over 4 hours in High Definition! Woo hoo!

When people talk about interleaving with High Definition, I don't think they meant 3 minutes of movie, 4 minutes of commercial, 1 minute of some dummy trying to cook or remodel a house, repeat ad nauseum.

Even with a TiVo, TNT and TBS are unbearable.

Fox has 6-8 shows in roughly DVD resolution.
