A "lame" Canadian TV show that became a cult favorite south of the border. Around here, it aired on PBS. But pretty much several years after the episodes aired in Canada. Kind of a typical high school teen drama show, jsut like you would see here. But the people had funny accents. ;) :D

Jeff, I think you're talking about Degrassi Jr. High or Degrassi High.

Degrassi Primer:

The Kids Of Degrassi Street was a lame show done by educational channels up in Canada a while ago. It followed a bunch of kids -- elementary school age -- and their lives. The kids kept growing up.

A few years later, Degrassi Jr. High came out. It was a decent (as Canadian TV goes) high school drama dealing with lots of issues -- teen pregnancy being the first one that comes to mind. It aired on CBC, which is a publically funded, but entertainment-driven network. The kids grew up some more, so the show changed it's name to Degrassi High. This lasted a couple of years, until the kids were about the age of high school graduates. The series finale was a 2-hour special that featured underage drinking, sex, and a couple of uses of the f-word in primetime by teenage actors on a show aimed at teens.

Now, about 10 years later, there's Degrassi: The Next Generation. It follows a couple of the characters from Degrassi Jr. High who are now teachers at a school. This show airs in Canada on CTV, a commercial network. From the OP's post, it seems that D: TNG has been picked up down here as well.

[edit: to answer the original question, I don't know when the new season starts, but your TiVo should. When it shows up in your Now Playing list, that's when it started. You could try checking www.epguides.com for airdates or the website of whatever channel is airing the series State-side.]

Oh... I thought this new show was essentially just like Degrassi High or Degrassi Junior High, with modern, 21st century Canadians.

But I still say my answer is mostly accurate..

I didn't know that the last season just started last September. I don't watch it my wife does. She said she used to watch it when she was a kid. I had never heard of it before a couple months ago.

I was a fan of the old Degrassi and I like the current one as well. They handle real situations in a frank and smart way that the equivalent American teen shows do not. I think it's hilarious to watch Degrassi:TNG and see the condom poster in the school hallway blurred out.

Umm, did anyone else scan this headline and read "TNG Star Date"!? I wondered why they named a Star Trek episode after some lame teeny-bopper series! :) (BTW, weren't there some teen dimestore novels with this name? Any relation?)

There's several Degrassi series of books; yes they're related.

Well, it's basically like Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High. The original premise of Degrassi: TNG was to follow teen parent Spike's (Christine Nelson) daughter Emma as she enters junior high. The first episode of the series was the 10 year reunion of the old Degrassi High class where most of the old regulars returned (Joey, Spike, Snake, Caitlin, Lucy). Only Spike and Snake were originally to be in TNG. After season 1, Joey was reintroduced as a permanant character in TNG along with his stepson Craig. Turns out Craig's mother was Joey's wife who had already passed away. In season 3, Caitlin was brought back as a permanant member of the cast and sparks have started to fly between Joey and Caitlin.

The show currently airs on The N, and new episodes have been airing occasionally through the season.

Info on the show can be found at http://www.degrassi.tv or via the Canadian network CTV at http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNe...70023_58705707/

The current series is airing in the US pretty close to the Canadian schedule, although The N has occasionally withheld episodes to air them at special dates/times. The episodes where Ashley was going through her drug spell were aired out of order with the rest of the eps.

So, some of the Degrassi High/Junior High charaters are back on the Next Gen version, played by the same actors??

The only character to not be played by the original actor so far was Shane, in an episode earlier this season when Emma went on a quest to find her father. I guess technically Emma isn't being played by the same actress either ;-) Even Dr. Sue Johanson has returned as "Dr. Sally"

The most surprising return to me was when Wheels came back a few eps back with the help of Joey to help lift Snake's spirits when he found out he had lukemia and was to go through chemo. Joey and Wheels shaved their head to compliment Snake's new hairdo. Guess the drunken traffic accident didn't totally ruin Wheels' life.

As said before, the show premieres new episoes on "The-N" Fridays at 8p, 10p, and 12a (Sat Morn) and reruns throughout the weekend. Reruns air throughout the week at various times.

Jog my memory. Who was killed in the car crash in the final Degrassi High epiosde (actually a TV movie)? And who was driving? Was it Joey? Wheels??

The movie was called "School's Out" and aired in the U.S. under PBS's "Wonderworks" franchise.

Wheels was driving the car with Lucy as the passenger. I don't remember the purpose of the trip (I believe to get some more food), but Lucy was injured pretty good and Wheels was driving drunk in a car accident.
