Ok, I ordered a hard drive...Now help me with the tools.
Also, what is the best guide? I am using this one.
I ordered this . Should be here in two days. Good buy?
I have a TCD240040 and I am wondering what else I need.
I am getting a 9thtee bracket. Do I need a device like the power trip? This was written in the hinsdale how-to
quote:
The newer Series 2 model TCD2XXXXX 40hr and 80hr units noted above do have a smaller power supply than previous models, but after 6 months of testing (running dual drives in 3 separate units) with over 1000 power cycles each (normal use would only experience a couple power cycles) without any problems/failures indicates that there are no long term heat or power issues running dual drives in these units.
Will I only need a T-10 screw driver?
Do I need a y power cable or an IDE cable?
Do I need to increase swap with a 40 and 160?
Does it matter if my computer is on an NTFS system?
I'd like to put this all together when it gets here thurs, so can you guys be nice and let me know what all I would need for a 240040?this one. this one

I think pretty much all of those questions are answered on our D-I-Y website here:

I saw that website last night and have been trying to google it for the last 2 hours! Thanks!

Sorry to post so much, but I have one last question.
This website asks if I want to save recordings. I do not care about recorded shows, but I want to keep season passes and such.
Are season passes saved no matter what, or do I need to "Save recordings" to save season passes?

If you're simply adding the new drive as drive B (what your description so far suggests), not only will your season passes be fine, but all your recordings will be as well.
If not, as long as you make the backup correctly, your season passes will be fine. After you create the backup, it's worth temporarily restoring directly to the new drive to make sure the backup works. While doing that, for your sanity you can also verify that your season passes are still there.

Thanks. I'm not even sure what a backup does, but it can't be bad. Last night I was trying to make a small FAT32 partition off the C drive to store it when Partition Magic decided to have an error during the process. Fried the MBR.
Spent 4 or 5 hours installing windows on a secondary drive, then booted to it with the old C drive connected as slave. Partition Magic then decided to run a scandisk-type thing, which luckily fixed it, so now I have my C drive and Fat32 partition, althought it caused lots of trouble and I lost lots of time.

You most definitely want to make a backup. If somewhere down the road, or even in the middle of the upgrade, something goes wrong and you wind up restoring to the wrong drive, or corrupting the fs, you only path to recovery is to restore from a backup, the backup is very very small compared to the size of the disk, heck I burnt mine onto a CD. Doesn't take very long to do and you'll thank yourself later.
best of luck

Is it a very good idea to advise somebody whose "self-chosen" name is "Crash" to open up both their Tivo and their computer?????

Well, I a very good at computer stuff, just never messed with a TiVo and I have had bad experiences with Linux. Just trying to lay it all out before I do it.
And the HDD problems were Partition Magic's fault. Stupid program.
