Canadian mockumentary Trailer Park Boys goes stateside

HALIFAX - Canadian underground hit Trailer Park Boys has been picked up by BBC America, creator Mike Clattenburg announced Friday.

The popular, Halifax-produced mockumentary TV series will have its U.S. debut in April 2004, when more than 50 million people will be able to tune in and enjoy the antics of Julien, Ricky, Bubbles and the other characters of Sunnyvale Trailer Park.

Random quotes from Bubbles:
-(nodding towards a jar of pickled eggs) Don't think you can buy me off with a jar of those delicious things.
-(whispers to cows) Eat it like you know me.
-Julian....I picked you up at jail five minutes ago and now you're tellin me we're going to go steal car radios?

WOW!

Only 30 views and no responses...

Is it that no one has heard of them,
everyone's disgusted by what they've heard,
or no one cares?

...or is it Bubbles?!?
;)

I heard of this a few weeks ago. Don't get BBC America so I looked to see if I could get it on T.O. CA TV. I can't :(

So...don't really care ;)

As the first 2 seasons are avaiable in canada on dvd, I found this review that may shed some light on this show.

It's really not something that's easy to describe when you think of tv in us terms, but here ya go....

Reviewer: Spiral
At a minimum, TPB offers polished character development and a unique mix of superbly performed personalities that guarantee absorbing every viewer. A typical comment during background holiday viewing was, "What the h*** are you watching?" -- with that individual converted to TPB in about an hour. No one left the room during our TPB DVD unveiling and short of seats, people sat the carpet.
As unique as the inhabitants are, TPB never beats the old "fish out of water" mule as there's nothing hackneyed about this series; the characters barely fit in amoungst themselves but are certainly their funniest interacting with the non-trailer park world.
Paraphrasing season 3:
Bubbles (in a scolding hush): "Ricky, you can't shout 'dope' in a bank!'"
Ricky (proudly, out of jail about 20 minutes and still in his numbered orange jumpsuit): "Sure I can Bubbles, I'm rich as f*** now. Dopity-dope-dope."
How many people do you know that've been tossed from a bank?
Or get arrested at their wedding before kissing the bride?
The scripts never force or focus on nonconformity, become self-conscious or betray their characters, like "Jackass", or most US shows that substitute overemphasis and preachiness for lack of talent or perspective. TPB never goes through the tedium of lecturing on societal ills, as there's too much of that out there and we all see it anyway. They're too busy exploiting it: crime, alcoholism and drug usage, in which almost every episode owes, never get lionized but remain weaknesses to leverage, deal with or circumvent.

Given their extreme dysfunction and nonconformity with the outer world, TPB remains in control, very unextreme, unforced, certainly owing to improv somewhat, with an easy acting and visual style -- it matches well with the hyper-sharp hand-held video and could be your own personal footage on the TV. Until you see someone smashing a bottle on your windshield.
Further supporting character development and audience empathy is the precision in which situational ethics are bent and reshaped -- keeping things hysterically fresh. Ricky's first-person exposition to the camera is priceless as he rationalizes all behavior, improvising on whatever bits of logic that flash through his mind. For example, if he sells dope to the local prison guards, then he's guaranteed there'll be good quality dope the next time he's arrested -- so, life works for Ricky whether he's in or out.
"Park" events never cross believability for the sake of a cheap laugh, but always feed a need or convenience: you never steal from someone in the "park", even if it's only Randy's barbeque and the serial numbers are sanded off for argument sake, but dragging an ATM machine at 60 kph to visit Bubble's welding torch, however distressing to Julian, is acceptable if it's for a forthright cause. Like trying to get arrested.

The show's still at cult status, except maybe in Canada where the actors are reportedly recognized everywhere, so there's no reason it won't pop internationally once aired -- honesty works hand-in-hand with universality and is its own reward.
After the dust settles on the series popularity, I hope the pilot film is released. It's a work of artistic black comedy that offers where TPB could have gone, but stands well on it's own, just like the series. The opening scene where Julian answers the camera crew at his door, and stands bewildered, hungover and disoriented for 30 seconds rivals the 50s ennui of Stanislovski- and Strassberg-trained actors like Brando, et., al. Yes, here's where the bar is.
In sum, talent on both sides of the camera, highest recommendation, unrivaled brilliance. There's not a character you won't like or at least, appreciate. Expect industry flattery soon -- my money says imitators are forthcoming and like Ricky says, "it's supply and command".

boing!

Episode 1, season 1
"Take Your Little Gun and Get Out of My Trailer Park"

April 15, 9pm
uncensored showing, April 16, 2am, BBCA

.....with another showing at 4am

The first ep is actually a slow one, at the start of an almost South Park-esque rise of unbelievability. (you'll hear: "they can't get any more outrageous than this weeks ep!" ...until the next week's ep)
;)

Are you saying that the 2am showing will have content different from the 9pm showing? Do I have to fiddle with my ToDo List?

The 9pm showing is suppose to be "edited for content", aka "Sanitized for Your Protection!".;)
...lots of bleeping, I figure some wholesale editing, too.

The late nite showing is suppose to be "uncut". Rumor has it that they won't cut anything at all from this showing.

There's actually two late nite showings, one at 2am and one at 4am. Which one of these, if not both of them, will be the uncut version, I don't know. Keep in mind that there's alot of "digitizing" to protect the innocent of Sunnyvale Trailer Park and the brand names of some fine products who otherwise would not want to be associated with Julian, Ricky and Bubbles. That's normal and not done by BBCA.

I'm recording the 9pm showing just to see what they've cut and I'm recording both of the late one's just to be sure.

seen the title of ep#2?
"F*ck Community College, Let's Get Drunk and Eat Chicken Fingers"

...ya gotta love this show....
:)

I love that show, can't wait for season 4 this Sunday, 9PM, uncensored, in Canada, on Showcase (as usual though, I will probably watch the west coast feed at midnight).

I was hooked from the first ep!:)
(faked a maildrop to get the dvd's!)
(4th season? Did Bubbles get frisky/lucky on the cruise? Were Trevor and Cory thrown overboard somewhere along the way? Will Lahey have a new attitude? Will Julian come out pissed?)

Judging from the views and responses to this thread, we may be the only ones who even give a flip. I've gotten use to folks looking at me like I've lost my mind when I try to describe it.

It'll be interesting to see how bbca handles it if any flack starts flying.

But I was really looking foward to no longer being "the only one"!
:(

Posted by: classicsat

I haven't seen it yet, I believe there is one more ep in season 3 to go (the one where Ricky steals the ATM, and Juilan breaks into is, splashing that dye on him,
Randy, and Leahy, them ending up in Jail, everybody else on the cruise.

Like the rest of the seasons, I suspect it will start will or jailed comrades leaving when their time is up, well after the cruise is over.

one last poke, just in case....

;)

I switched my recording selection to the later showing, on the rumors of differences in "cut vs. uncut." I'd love to hear a (spoiler-free) report on whether there is a difference, for those who might have actually compared!

(With an SP, it's easier to pick up the earlier showing, but I'll work around that if the later one is unbowdlerized.)

Greatest show on TV along with Chappelle's Show, IMO.

I have been watching Trailer Park Boys since the beginning. Sadly, there will be so much censoring of the show that I will bet it is unwatchable on our American airwaves.

You can download the episodes from the newsgroups... Or so I have heard...

BTW, Bubbles is the best character on television. Non stop laughter when he is on the screen.

Posted by: jmoak

It seems all of the showings last night were bleeped. They only bleeped "sheit" and "fork", so it actually wasn't so bad.
bbca didn't cut any of the program, though. I poped the disk in and watched both the dvd and last night's recording at the same time to see when and what they cut. They did not cut a single scene!

This was actually a rather mild ep so we'll have to keep an eye on what they do to the next one.

next week's ep (which my sa tivo's listing's do not give the name of;)):
"F*ck Community College, Let's Get Drunk and Eat Chicken Fingers"

Have you seen the origional movie?

Trailer Park Boys, The Movie IMDB Link

If you have any desire to see the movie DON'T READ THE SUMMARY!!!!

When I saw it I had no idea what it was about. When they revealed what the nefarious "service" was that Julian and Ricky were actually providing I literally fell outa my chair laughing!!!!

from the link, with the spoiler removed:
This is an early film "Pilot" for the hit Canadian tv show Trailer Park Boys. It was played to executives at a few networks before Showcase decided to sign them up for a tv series. Great acting and a very funny cast make this one of the best cult comedy films. ... Watch this movie if you want to understand the beginning of the tv series. I highly recommend it!

Ummm, maybe I need to give this another try. I watched the first 10 minutes of an episode this morning (they get out of jail and come home to the trailer park), but I didn't find a single thing funny about it and deleted it.

Give it another shot... another ep or two.

It's definitely not for everybody. It may even piss off a few folks once it get's started.

3rd ep title:
"Mr. Lahey's Got My Porno Tape!"

4th ep:
"Mrs. Peterson's Dog Gets F*cked Up"

it just keeps getting better and better! (or worse and worse, depending on how you look at it)
;)

Absolutely have to give it a couple shows. The show you watched was the one that setup the whole story and characters. It is funny to watch it again once you have seen some other episodes.

I do wish that they were on HBO or something where they did not have to sensor any of it becuase it does ruin it somewhat.

WTF? No BUBBLES in the movie? I will start laughing as soon as he is on camera.

I watched the new episode(Season 4 episode 1) that aired last week and it was great. Bubble made the already funny show into a hysterical laugh-fest.. At least for me.

Concur. Got the DVD set for Xmas, and not watching much Canadian TV around this house, had only heard of TPB, but never watched.

First ep was like, "WTF is this?" I gave it a chance anyway.
Second ep, I LOL quite a bit.
Third, I was hooked, and watched the whole set in that one go.

I watched the first episode of this on BBCA, but it didn't really seem that funny. I will give the next few episodes a try if you guys think it gets better (different). Are all the episodes the same as the first one?

It looks like bbca is "afraid" to provide the actual ep titles to the various guide services. There not listed on my sa, dtivo s1&2, zap2it or tvguide.

In case your wondering:

next week's (2nd) ep:
"F*ck Community College, Let's Get Drunk and Eat Chicken Fingers"

3rd ep title:
"Mr. Lahey's Got My Porno Tape!"

4th ep:
"Mrs. Peterson's Dog Gets F*cked Up"

it just keeps getting better and better! (or worse and worse, depending on how you look at it)

is there an echo in here?
;)

is the problem the lack of a laugh track? (???)
i actually prefer it that way....
