Maddening that she knew nothing about it and was unwilling to check with some one else. Oh well. Any ideas?
It's a retention offer. You read the thread right?

The offer is $399. But for select customers -- those who've been with DirecTV at least 2 years, no more than 1 late pay, spending at least $40/month, etc., you'll pay the $399 but they'll give you a $50 credit each month for 6 months -- but it's not via regular CSR's, you need to get to the retention department -- the people who talk you out of dropping DirecTV. So you need to start with a CSR and say something about getting a cable HD offer in the mail and being tempted, et. al.

I have to agree. In the guest room we just have OTA (Thanks to the HD deal for $99 from d*) I just couldn't justify $120 a year for maybe 2 weeks of TV viewing per year.

Close, They will charge $425 or so (shipping, tax, etc...) then do a lump credit all at once. I have a credit of over $300 on my account still. :D

Call the number in the thread!!!! It is the only way, plus you will not have to wait 15+ mins to talk to someone. ;)

Not even close. ;)

It's been a slow day for the thread! Anyone notice that it was a rookie who started this thread? mprh

I need to call GG and find out their estimated arrival date for the new units. Originally they had it at March 15th to their Bay Area wharehouse. Second time I checked they said March 28th.

Anyone else out there have a Good Guy order or from someone another brick and mortar?

Posted by: FuseWerx

Still no update from Robert. I sent my forms shortly after receiving them. Hoping all is well, and I didn't want to bombard him with voicemails/e-mails.

There are threads with more replies, and threads with more views... 1,808 replies and 131,011 views so far. But I haven't found any threads with more replies and more views.

"Who stays up this late?" 3,523 repliex, 34,462 views
"Star Wars Galaxies" 2,675 replies, 27,926 views

"Almost Complete Codes List" 520 replies, 355,642 views
"Getting the 3.2 Backdoor Code" 1,142 replies, 180,286 views
"3.0 Ethernet HowTos" 68 replies, 135,320 views
"Advice from a veteran to a newbie (consolidated)" 110 replies, 92,317 views

So this thread is one of the more well-rounded ones, with both substantial replies and substantial views.

By the time shipping begins, though, it could very well surpass those I found. I suppose there could be other larger threads out there still.

Posted by: Y0SHI

Does anyone know how "views" are calculated? I must sadly admit that I haved viewed the thread at least a hundred times (if not more). Is that one view or 100 views? If I keep hitting refresh does that increase the view count (not that I am doing or would ever do that)?

What "paperwork" are you refering to?

Posted by: Anthony In NYC

Wohoo, looks like I'm in the first 350. Now the only question is....do I have D* put up a root top antenna for me while they are dropping the extra line down for the HD-Tivo. With my indoor antenna I already receive CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, UPN (If you want to count them) and one PBS with about 70% signal strength. I'm sure that number would be close to 100% if I went roof top. I'm not sure if going from 70% to 100% and getting the WB would be worth the extra expense.

There are forms that most of the early sign ups have received. I believe they are Directv agreements, billing and shipping and the likes. It sounds like you are to fax those in. I'm just wondering if I should have received them by now?

Posted by: PJO1966

I haven't looked to see where you are on the list, but I believe Robert is concentrating on the first wave of shipments at the moment. They have received a pile of faxes and are working their way through them. E-mails are continuing to go out with the paperwork attached.

I ordered on 1/18 and should be in the mid to upper 200's. According to the list ds is compiling, there are quite a few before and after me that have everything they need ready to go.

That's gonna be a tough one to beat.

But hey, we have 2 1/2 or 3 weeks, at least, to try!

And I guess I shouldn't forget all those people who'll get their units after me, who'll have to talk about something to keep occupied, so maybe several more weeks, too. :;

I guessing how much you could charge would depend on how much clothing you were wearing (or should I say not wearing) while setting up the unit.

Naked with a girl in the room? I guess there's a first time for everything. :(

Posted by: joegolf68

Slow day. So who do I call to get the naked installation special? Speaking of which, I was watching some ultimate fighting thing as I was switching through the channels. It was in HD. When the girls came out who walk with the fighters to the ring, my mouth dropped. My wife just laughed and said I will really enjoy porn when they produce it in high def. Usually I don't watch much porn, but my gosh, high def would really add to the experience! Can't wiat until all shows are in HD!

It's been announced as coming, or rather FOX HD has been announced as coming. Speculation is we won't see it until it's really HD, which would be by Fall 2004.

Here's an idea.

Since you can do 10 day ebay auctions, setup your auction 10 days before your hd-tivo arrives.

Sit back and watch the frenzy as people bid to own what they perceive will be an exclusive HD-Tivo that is not out yet.

Posted by: PJO1966

I just checked ebay for my receiver... There are 4 there going for $200 - $350 or so. I could live with that.

Posted by: joegolf68

I figured the porn thing might get some hits. when I get my HD unit, I will go ahead and buy some PPV's. Until then, no chance to pay that much for one time shot! lol ;)

I am going to call GG now and see if my unit is ready to pick-up this afternoon!

Order #: 53910
type: phone

Wendy quoted "up and running by the end of April."
If it was for Dish network, I would have asked "what year?"
My Dish 921 HD PVR has been on pre-order for over 1 year!
I was #91 on that list.

Posted by: poolne1

Does anyone know if the owner's manual is available for download? If not, does anyone have a link to a picture of the remote? I would like to use some of the waiting time to program my MX-800 for arrival of HD Tivo.

By the way, I did a search in this forum and there is a thread regarding the owner's manual, but it died out some time ago. Thought maybe there might be some more current info.

Posted by: bmccrea

I've been trying to find a owner's manual/userguide, but so far I've been unsuccessful.

Posted by: joegolf68

Just got off the phone with the Good guys (GG). The salesperson was aware of this thread!!!! He says their buyers are not even sure about the ETA. His computer, as of 1700 hrs PST showed 264 pre-orders and an expected date of 10 April for 1,000 units.

He qualified everything though with nothing has been updated for a long time and it will be around the end of the month before they have any REAL estimates. I am still hoping for Robert to beat them, but with my order being past the 350 number, I am not optimistic.

For those interested, the GG did accept the comparison price for the web price, however, they required a 50% down, which the salesperson said was very unusual as they normally can get by with 10% down.

Caution: Before ordering from GG and expecting the discount, know that the salesperson had to ask the manager and I also purchased the extended warranty. I really do believe that the fact that I bought $6,000 worth of TV and accessories a few weeks earlier helped me get a better deal. Duh!

I am posting this hoping to help some of you way down on the list, not to undermine Robert! As I said, Robert treated me really well when I complained to him how his salesperson was evasive when I made the order and asked if I was in the top 200 to order!

don't out me out with GG either! lol

Best wishes.

For the longest thread, that probably would go to the Denver Tower and OTA HDTV threads. David Bott over at AVS had to close it down because of the size to start over twice previously and the current version ( 3 ) is around 7500 posts and climbing.

VE is sending out an email with three documents. You need to fill two of those and sent them back to VE. Then, they will tell you where you are in the list. Although your place in the line does not change due to when they receive your paperwork, if you don't send them those before they receive the HD DirecTiVo's, they won't send it to you.

Also, it's possible that the email from VE is in your "junk" or "spam" box. Mine did. I had to fish it out from there.

If you ordered through ValueElectronics on that date, then I suggest that you contact Robert to get more info. If you take a look at this post http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...052#post1797052 , you can see most of the preorder list from VE. It's earliest entry is 1/13, and 1/11 falls before that. That's why there's been some OY-VEY and such. If you preordered somewhere else, then contact where you ordered. Basically, the order numbers that have been tossed out here are all preorders from VE, which is basically the first business to announce that they're taking preorders.

If you did pre-order through VE on that date, then let us know Heck-- let us know where you preordered on that date! if you ordered from VE then, Doug has some work to do!!!

In my best Jackie Mason impression--- "you got some lox for that bagel?" (OY-VEY was taken already...)

I wish that could be true. Maybe someday. In our Colorado Springs DTV thread on AVS Forum http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/show...threadid=141193, we've contacted most of the local stations that are non-HD, to get their schedule or story or whatever.

Right now, the OTA scene is: CBS in 1080i, Fox in 480p, PBS and ABC in 480i DTV signals which are basically the same as their SD 4x3 picture, PBS will be HD soon, NBC says they might be HD in a year, ABC seems to want to wait until the FCC puts a gun to their head, no stated HD plans for UPN, and no WB affiliate at all. And we're too far from Denver to receive any of their signals. HD cable is the same as this OTA list.

So HD = CBS + D* right now. Feel sorry for us. HD-TiVo will help, and hopefully D* will kick up the channel offerings soon. (Other than the HD scene, Colorado Springs is incredible. Guess we're supposed to spend time outside too.)

Ahhh. I am still the highest on the list for those in Colorado Springs. Of course, I was too cheap to get the overnight shipping but... That still is impressive with me at 52, cgeurin at 84 and TallGuy at 103. All for Colorado Springs with only one OTA HD station...

What can I say? I'm a sucker for shiny new toys. I had my HLN567 on pre-order for 4 months! Of course, buying this HDTiVo is the DLP's fault...

I sprung for the 2-day shipping, so come on up to Monument and you can check it out. ;)

You will likely have it the day before me as both SanDiego and NewJersey are 3 days away on UPS Ground. Ahh well. Perhaps the following day, we can come down to my house and watch it on my HLM617 :-)

Don't know if you realize this, but B&W TV's are higher definition than color, or at least the signals were. I am not sure if it is still the case, or if I am misinformed, but that's what I remember.

The list will continue to be compiled until DirecTV HD DVR's are readily available when orders are placed (no waiting) from Value Electronics. So just post your order info and I'll add it.

The color information is at a lower resolution than the b/w information. But I don't think that that means that a b/w TV is higher resolution: you should be able to turn the color all the way down on a color set, and be left with only the same luminance signal that the b/w set uses.

You're both right -- before comb filters the luminance was low-passed below 3.58 (usually at 2-2.5MHz) to assure no effects from the color subcarrier and its sidebands. But the early papers on the development of NTSC show that the developers purposely interleaved the luma and chroma sidebands so that comb filtering would be possible as the art progressed. With comb filtering the luminance BW is the same as it was in monochrome days (when few sets could have displayed scorching 4.2 MHz video).

I should be #33 or #34 but I haven't gotten a confirmation email back from VE. I faxed my paperwork on March 1st and then again on March 5th (OK, that was a little compulsive). However today I decided to drop one of the basics and get a SD Tivo and a 5x8 switch. I guess I am going more Tivo than I thought! Plus I am having them install it now instead of waiting for the HD Tivo. :)

This is just a tiny bit off subject but it is about pre-ordering! I pre-ordered the Harmony SST-688 remote. It should be here within a few weeks with any luck. Looks like the 668 is better looking and more functional than the 659 (is that the right number?) Harmony has just posted new pictures of the unit which looks awesome. An email from the Harmony rep stated there is a coupon somewhere on their site. I need to ask them to immediately program in the new recorder we all are waiting for!!

Go to media resources for the pictures.

I'm expecting it to use the same codes current TiVos use, so not much programming should be necessary. It should only need an output format button that the current ones don't have.

Posted by: tremor_f

The 'output format button' on the remote is the up-arrow. There's no new dedicated button for this -- Tivo just used the same context-dependent UI convention as they did with the down-arrow to switch between tuners on the DirecTivo. It's probably safe to assume that down-arrow function will also carry over to the HDTivo.

joegoff68,

You have messed up now. I use to have the big screen TV to myself. The wife use to gripe that I had things so complicated only I could use it. :) What she was complaining about beats me, I got her, her own Tivo to use in the bedroom. Then I messed up and got a Harmony 659 remote. One button and she can turn everything on. Bad idea, now we have that "quality time" together arguing over why we are not going to watch Oxygen or WE. All I wanted was to watch the ballgame on ESPN on a big screen TV in a little peace. :( Kidding aside you will love it. :D

There's a thread about the 688 on the AVS "Remotes" forum here. Waiting to see if the production model incorporates all the comments made at CES. It was supposed to be out next week, but it's looking more like the end of the month.

Getting back to the "preorders", has anyone received an email with their number since the weekend? I haven't seen anything posted here for days.

Wow, just looking at all these post with people that ordered.

Value Electronics is well over the 400 mark.

I wonder if He will get all of the fill right away?

I am switching from Dish Network does Hughes do what Dish does on the 921 and ONLY alocate 921s (HD DVRs) based on you past history of demand or past orders.

In other words is V.E a big retailer to get more orders filled as compare to a big box store like Good Guys who claim to have 1000 on order?

Just wondering. . ..

1381x - 1247x ~= 1340 web orders taken, which does not include phone orders but does include web orders that aren't for HD DTiVos. These are about a wash so far.

The start of making them. Since we don't know for sure the manufacturing process and lead-times, shipment is anyone's guess.
Based on other threads, it should take about a week to manufacture and then ship.

Posted by: Will-san

All of these questions surely belong in other threads but this thread is just more fun.

Remotes:

From where did you pre-order the 688?

How long will it take harmony to get a profile for the HD tivo up on their website?

Pre-wiring:

Will I want to switch outputs to composite (or s-video) when watching (god forbid) SD material, or will the HDtivo up-convert and make the component feed look fine.

Stacking and storage.

are there any limitations on where you can put the unit. My replay wanted to be on the top of the stack or else it would overheat.

Road trip.

Who all is going to Mexico to watch theirs roll of the assembly line?

Didn't they just recently stop making Volkswagens in Mexico? is this the same plant re-tooled? but I digress.

Whats next?

I need to start thinking about the future. What can I pre-order to fill the sense off emptiness once this thing finally arrives.

Posted by: dswallow

The HD DVR has limited ability to do things to an SD signal. It will upconvert. But more advanced things like non-linear stretching it won't do. That means switching to a 480i or 480p output or to S-Video/Composite would usually be needed to allow another device such as the display to perform that sort of function.

One would hope one day they'd at least allow some sort of automatic control, which could be implemented in the software, such as automatically switching between 480i or 480p for SD signals and 720p or 1080i for HD signals. But I wouldn't necessarily be holding my breath about it.

Little happens quickly anymore with TiVo. And even if they did do it, there's the convincing of DirecTV to release such a thing to consider.

The quote on the phone for delivery early today was early May.

Personally I am hoping that they are able to deliver it before May 15th as that is the first away game HD Broadcast of the MLS Cup Champion San Jose Earthquakes (Sorry no link privledges yet) . :D

Posted by: aaronwt

My HD-TiVo will be strictly for HD. I have 3 other DTivos for SD content. They won't get used much after the HD-TiVo arrives. I still keep flip flopping about ordering another one. I really should wait and get a second one for a Christmas present to myself.

I think Robert said they were not going to notify people's exact place beyond the 350 that were hoping to get in the first wave.

I am probably like #1000, and am still waiting to get the 2 forms to fill out. Forcing myself to be patient and wait another week at least.

Recording is always in the resolution it's being sent from DirecTV or the OTA station. So playing back a recorded program still lets you fully control the output format.

You can call Harmony and order it over the phone. It takes Harmony about as long as it takes the first user to learn the commands and configure things. But since it will probably just be a standard peanut remote with maybe a couple button changes I don't suspect anything is necessary.

And what do you think the chances are that a beta tester has a Harmony remote and has already added it?

Guessing where the 350-mark probably is, it looks like just slightly fewer than 1/2 have checked in so far, so I can't agree with characterizing that as "most."

Maybe all the important ones have checked in though. :D

No, but you can switch the DVI output to 480i or 480p output manually from the remote when necessary and then your plasma most likely can stretch it. Mine can (Fujitsu P50).

No data yet on the color of the side curtains, as far as I know.

However, it is known that the HDTivo *can* do a linear stretch on 4:3 material to fill a 16:9 screen. I gave up on using the non-linear stretch modes on my Toshiba RPTV quite a while ago, and everyone in my house is accustomed to how the linear stretch looks.

The Fujitsu P50 does a non-linear stretch so well that most people don't even realize that the picture is stretched. I guess I'm spoiled.

I emailed Harmony with a few questions. I was told if I pre-ordered the SST-688 they would give me a discount. I know I could wiat for an Ebay deal, but just don't want to wait any longer than I have to. Yesterday, I recieved an update from Harmony stating they expect the units to ship at the end of March. Also, they said they added a joystick to this unit for navigation, whatever that means. Other than that, the new units are suppose to just be sleeker, different colors and "better" placed buttons. Since I don't have a current model, I have no idea if the extra money will be worth it.

I try to keep it within the last 80 or so posts of this thread. Right now it's at: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...331#post1800331

If you set your posts-per-page setting for the fourm to 40, it'll generally be near the top of the most recent odd numbered page.

Only Value Electronics can tell you your place in line... but you can make an educated guess using the list. ;)

It appears the only people higher than #300 who know their "place in line" contacted Robert directly. Has anyone with a slot higher than #300 received the paperwork email from VE yet _without_ pestering them first?

Received the paperwork but haven't received my place in line (but I'm definitely over 300).

Here is a link to an Ebay listing for this new remote. The lister says he is an authorized dealer and has included quite a few details and an opportunity to preorder it.

For me Doug, it's just the anxiety of waiting. My stomach does flip flops each time I realize how much longer I have to wait.

I WANT IT NOW!!

I've been minimizing my excitement level by telling myself that the ship date is too far away to be worth thinking about-- but after I upgrade the OTA antenna this weekend and complete the rewiring project I don't think that's going to work anymore. :)

So where are you on the list? I don't see YOSHI anywhere.

I don't think you are allowed to post in this thread until you give your order number. ;)

Well, I'm well less than 300 but I still don't know my place in line even though I sent email to Robert (got no response.) I'm a little ticked and a little worried.

I am somewhere between #300 and #350. I got the forms via email from VE and turned them in already. But nope, I haven't received my "place in line" from VE yet. I'm still anxiously waiting for that email.

"Well, I'm well less than 300 but I still don't know my place in line even though I sent email to Robert (got no response.) I'm a little ticked and a little worried."

Hang on there. Its not like there are Hundreds of people working at V.E.

They can other do some many at a time. They still have weeks to go before some are even due to ship (one past 200) and even more week for those past the 350 mark.

Im probably aroung the 500 to 600 mark. I bet some of the employees are real stressed out waiting for this to calm down. I bet there fax machine it just burning through the paper with new orders and customers for Standard Tivo Boxes and Pre-orders for HDTivo boxes.

Have you ever worked in retail or in a call center? It is hard.

I would imagine some pressure could be relieved by a quick email upon receipt of the faxed info "Hi there, thanks for faxing your materials! We're a bit buried in paperwork right now, but rest assured we're gonna be in touch very soon now, however we wanted to let you know we received your signed agreements. Have a great weekend!". Figure 4-5 minutes per order to do that (get paperwork, find order file, get email addres, send email, review fax quickly to be sure everything's there, file away, mark folder as complete). That's what? Only ~108 hours of someone's time; about 13.5 8-hour workdays. Just to acknowledge. :) That poor person does need a few breaks during the workday too, like for lunch.

See the problem? Just give them a little time.

(Yes, scottchez, I know you were essentially saying the same thing, I didn't quote your post to pick on you... you were just conveniently located. ;) )
