This thread is addictive. When my unit gets here, I won't know whether to hook it up or post a reply here.

That will be a tough one. Since time will be of the essence, you will probably head here first, with a quick blurb, like,
"Hey! I got it. Gonna go set it up now...",
or
"Wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/guy you gave $20 of the street to sign for the package: has just called and said that it has arrived!"
or
"I am typing this for my significant other who told be to come here and let you know that he is setting up his HD DirecTiVO, which he hasn't stopped talking about for 3 months, and I will have to hear about it for another 3, as he tells me how great it is. And yes, I know it will be upgraded. Are there really 5,000 posts just about this?"

In 3 days it will be 2 months that we started ordering fom VE. In retrospect these 2 months went by pretty quickly. I am hoping that my insane desire for this product allows the time to delivery go as fast.

I emailed Harmony with a few questions. I was told if I pre-ordered the SST-688 they would give me a discount. I know I could wiat for an Ebay deal, but just don't want to wait any longer than I have to. Yesterday, I recieved an update from Harmony stating they expect the units to ship at the end of March. Also, they said they added a joystick to this unit for navigation, whatever that means. Other than that, the new units are suppose to just be sleeker, different colors and "better" placed buttons. Since I don't have a current model, I have no idea if the extra money will be worth it.
I just bought a SST-659 to use with my DVR and the << >> controls suck in terms of placement to skip commercials, etc., but everything else is very cool and perfect to let my wife bounce between components, inputs, etc. flawlessly.
I am going to order the 688 because the buttons are more condusive to a DVR user, I mean a DirecTV HD-Tivo hand delivered by Robert.

Are the Western Digital drives, that the HD-TiVo will use, the Fluid Bearing Drives??

I suspect the slowest time of all will be between the moment Robert posts "They're here and heading out the door as I type" and when the FedEx [or Brown?] actually show up with our long lusted after HD TiVo. :D

I am Number 22 on the list and I ordered it via phone around 1:00 PM on January 16, 2004. Robert told me that I should have it around April 5, 2004 because it will be overnighted to me as soon as he receives them, maybe earlier. I will be upgrading it with a 320 gig HD if possible as soon as I get it via Hinsdale.

Why only a 320gb drive? By the time someone's figured a hack to upgrade or add hard drive you could probably put in a pair of 400gb drives. :D

But, as others have noted before, his inbox is full and can't accept any more messages.
So, Robert, my order number is 12573.

I was hoping that the first batch would be showing up a few days earlier than this. That's getting really close to the Masters (if I even end up in the first batch).

I was wondering how all this went last time with the new SD Tivo Series 2 came out for Direct Tv.
Did VE take the lead then and ship every ones orders before most stores had it?
Posted by: edrock200
VE was the first company that was reported here to ship out the units. I believe Good Guys, Circuit City and Tweeter followed, Best Buy was one of the last to report.
Posted by: Kamakzie
No I talked to him because I had a question about my order and he was really busy at a home show in New Jersey. However he took the time to answer my questions nicely so very cool!

just had my extra line run this morning and the phase iii installed. my current receiver reports all birds in action.
only thing missing is OTA antenna, but i have no choice to wait cause i sold both of my HD receivers on ebay already. So I currently have no way to verify OTA reception.
how can i get E=MC squared to work in my favor and get me my unit yesterday :D

But is it 12642 or 12643??? My secret is still safe!
Actually I wasn't too worried about the order number thing. Everyone else was hiding their number, so I did too.
It's 12642 btw. I guess 12643 was a non HDTiVo order. :)

As reported earlier in this massive thread... Robert was not planning on sending out place numbers to those higher on the list... at least not until the first batch went out.

1500 people X $1000 = 1.5 million dollars. I don't know, a million bucks doesn't go as far as it used to. It aint a big deal to ba a millionaire any more.

Keep in mind the $1000 is not all profit, the HD TiVo retails for $1000 each. My guess is even at quantity prices VE is paying about $500-$600 wholesale per unit. Then there is other overhead factored into each piece just to run a business i.e. utilities, rent, payroll, etc. Then with the AVS discount if VE realizes between a $200-$300 profit I think they'll be very happy.

I hope it's a fair amount of profit for him to be going through all this with the emails and such. He seems like an upstanding businessman who deserves a nice payday. I will definitely be ordering from VE again in the future.

Seems to me it could be a lot less too. The cost could be more than $600, plus many of us are taking the $100 discount off of the $1000 price, the credit card merchants get a cut of a couple percent, plus he definitely has a lot of payroll into this project. Probably even overtime premiums for his hourly people too. And I wonder if he'll get to 1500 units. So it's not grossing $1.5 million, it's probably netting less than $100K, I'd guess. Still it's great to see a business owner who takes a risk get rewarded for it.

After all the help from this and the pre-order thread, I've now ordered the $99 HD upgrade from DirecTV, and placed a deposit on the HR10-250 at Tweeter.
DirecTV insisted that I commit to the HD package for 1 year, but when I told the CSR that I really didn't want a higher monthly, she agreed to give me the HBO and Showtime parts of my service free for 6 months each, which pretty much covers the HD package for the year.
The Tweeter CSR told me they're expecting an initial shipment of 80 HR10-250s on April 15. Doesn't seem realistic, but one can hope. I am #30 on their list. Price is $999.99 but they have a price guarantee for 30 days. Although they won't match web prices, they will match other retailers like CC.
Thanks to all for the amazingly helpful info in these threads!

Just checking in. Received my HR10-250 today directly from Mexico where I know the plant manager. Works great but now I need some more hi-def to record. Directv was cool with the set-up, allowing me to simply change over the Samsung HD to the TiVo with no extra charge. The remote works great with the new selecto-wheel that they just added. Now I can do 30 second bumps or 60 second bumps at my option. Weaknees is adding another 250 GB for $99 and it should be here tomorrow.
NOT!!!! But I am having a good time dreaming this morning. Back to the pain pills.

You're getting ripped off... the 400GB add-on is $39.95, and they price match. Someone posted a receipt from Circuit City for the upgrade drive showing a $59.77 credit balance.

Re: Price and profit margin, I hope this time around Hughes gives dealers a good rate. When they announced the HDVR2 it had an MSRP of $200. Hughes charged some vendors more than $200 per unit. Hopefully they won't screw vendors this time.

Howdy,
I too only have a single LNB dish so I'm thinking about taking advantage of this deal I've seen mentioned here, however I don't see anything about this pricing/package/promo on the DirecTV web site. The only thing I see is a $399 upgrade package with triple-LNB dish and receiver. Is there a specific URL or promo code to mention or something to get the $99 deal?
Thanks!

I doubt that Robert clears much more than $100.00 $150.00 a unit. Nevertheless still a good chunck of profit.
Some of you must have better luck getting Robert to respond to your PM's than do I. I sent him a PM two weeks ago today that he read that same night but never responded to. When I tried to follow-up his box was full. It goes without saying that he has been very busy--however this time it cost him a sale. After two weeks on reply to my first question, and no opportunity to even ask my second I no longer was willing to wait to talk to him about buying a new Harmony remote and wound up buying it elsewhere. :(
Posted by: LarryInAz
Just a suggestion FWIW - but as many PMs or emails as Robert has been getting it's easy to miss replying to a few emails plus it's been mentioned several times in this massive thread that his PM mailbox has been full on different occasions
Rather than depending upon a PM or email to one individual it would probably be best to call VE directly. If Robert is busy or out of the office Wendy and Graham are also very knowledgable. It also increases your odds of getting a direct answer rather than leaving to chance that your question just sits in cyberspace.
Just my .02...

ideally it would be a sticky and only robert would post in it... so it doesn't get full of BS like this thread.

Well, if there were an announcement for such a product, there would be one.

I have been informed that I'm number 274 on the list.

Got one here...RWC...into HD...not much into fashion...cept Tee shirts and cutoffs.
Luckily when my "box" comes it won't know or care about who turns it on.

If one orders through the internet, one should be able to communicate about the order through the internet as well.

FWIW - VE is not only in business selling the HD TiVo's and they also are not only an online store. They have a B&M business to run. Since they have a toll free number it's not like they're hiding from anyone. If your patience is running thin on waiting for an email/PM reply pick up the phone and talk to someone.
Posted by: Kamakzie
When I called today I used the toll number since I have nationwide LD I figured I would save Robert a few quarters.

Dang Marco, I didn't think I got it on there! I was trying to do a pic but it kept saying it was too big. I suck at trying to do photo's. Guess I'll have to try again unless someone volunteers to let me email the pic and then send it back at the right size!

EMail me the picture. A big version, not whatever you tried to crop down to what you first tried to upload. Send that too so I know what you wanted to crop. But get me a full size original version, too.

Nah, forget about back on topic. I agree KC has every right to express himself. But, I would say that someone homophobic using the term homo as KC did is derogatory and basically hate speech. Not the most egregious example of it I've ever seen by any means, but a little unpleasant on what is generally a good natured board.
All right, back on topic... I want my Damn TiVo YESTERDAY!

you're a tolerant man pj and i commend that, but this kind of hatred probably driven by kc fears and own insecurities has to stop if humans are to survive on earth.
kc doesnt realize that he has just unveiled his own weakness

I think we are reading way to much into his comments, he thought he was being funny. He wasn't. Lets move on.
Posted by: PJO1966
I saw no hatred. I am not offended by the word homo. All he said was that he was freaking out because there seem to be so many of us in here. The hatred may indeed be inside him, but I don't feel he was offensive in his post. That's just my opinion. I tend to have a sense of humor about most everything.
*edit* perhaps my sense of humor comes from having to wear stuff like the red polyester suit you see to the left.

Ok, back to HD-TIVO "pre-order".
Lets play a new game. Lets see if we can guess what day we will receive our HD-TIVO and what time we will receive it- with in a 1 hour window.
Maybe if enough will play Doug might be so kind and put another list together for us.
For me:
06 April 04
3:00pm to 4:00pm
Dave
Posted by: neilaevans
Oh, oh, I want to play too.
30 March 04
11am-12pm

Don't even.
Posted by: PJO1966
I'll play that game...
3.26.04 9a-10a
Posted by: jdk
OK - I'll play that game...
March 30th. UPS guy usually comes between 1:00-2:00
Who comes the closest wins. Wins what? well, a new HD Tivo...
So, who's going to start an "Official Release Watch" thread, or should we just keep this one around for the sake of post count?

It's purely random guessing and would pollute the list with information that's got no bearing on any real information. If I added that, we'd start getting posts asking about how we know when it's being delivered, et. al.
So yes, maybe.
In reality, I mean no. :D But "maybe" is correct.

Larry, you're #134 man...it's not going to happen!
(Boy, I really hope it does).
Oh, how about an update to this game...we can all vote whether we think a given person's estimate is:
A) Optimistic
B) Pessimistic
C) Just right
And Doug will put the total number of each type of votes that each person's prediction has received in the master list, and, and...
...Doug, get away from me!!
...Put down that shotgun!!!!
BAM!

In all seriousness though I'm being optimistic that Robert will hopefully be able to get at least 200 units for the first shipment. If so then mine should arrive just as soon as #1 on the list taking into account geography of course.

I'm going more on the theory that production will start on the 22nd as described and they won't really be sending any out to distributors until the end of that week at the earliest. So even if Robert goes down to San Diego and ships from there, we won't be seeing any until the next week.
I share your dream though...

OK the rules are as follows.
1. Post the date and time you think your HDtivo arrives at your destination
2. Post the UPS or FEDEX link that shows the actual time of delivery.
3. The person who is the closest wins bragging rights and thier HDtivo.

April 12th 4:17 pm
good luck everyone.

Two options, both work great:
Ask for (demand!) Nitrous Oxide. Then, if you Dentist doesn't have headphones and music, bring your own mp3 player.
Makes fillings not only eaiser, but fun!
Option 2 - Sometimes they don't wan't to give you Nitrous for a long period. If so, ask for (demand!) anti-anxiety medication. I had a root canal last year - took two pills about 30 mins. before the appointment. By the time I sat down, I was feeling pretty goooooood! Put on my headphones, and I swear two minutes later it was all done. I apparently had drifted off to sleep. Now, that's how to do a root canal!
However, neither option will spare you what occurs when the novacaine wears off. Make sure you have a prescription for demerol, co-tylenol etc.
Then, sit back and relax and watch HD Sopranos you captured with your new TiVO. :)

I expect the UPS/FedEx person will come by my house with mine on 3/26 11:30 a.m. But as luck would have it, since no one's at home, and they will take it back. And I would have to wait the weekend and pick it up at 10:00 a.m. on 3/29 if lucky.
Otherwise, the drive would be out with the package again on that morning, so I would have to go back at 10:00 a.m. on 3/30 to pick it up. And since I'd have to go to work, I would be carrying the box in the trunk until I get home that evening.
Am I optimistic or pessimistic? :p
