I've got that same voice in my head, but I have a distraction-- I'm volunteering on the course at the Tournament Players Championship (golf) for the whole week--So that's like a brand new HD Tivo--But better-- I'm within the ropes!

My guess for the arrival of my unit--preorder #clxix (169 for the non-roman's) --Monday, April 5, at 2:34 pm.

my take on the sexuality thing that's been happening lately, Yea--it's been a good filler, but --for me-- to each is own, and that is fine (by me at least).

Can we tone that discussion down a bit and get back to preorder posts??

I ordered on january 31, but I am not on the long list.. Spoke with VE and they assured me I am in the que for the second batch, due mid-April.

If you can give a little more specific info so I know what position to stick your listing in, I'll add you to the list.

It's dawning on me that I've spent way more time in the last month reading this thread about HD TiVos than I have actually watching HD. If there were no HD TiVo on the drawing board, I wouldn't have wasted all this time.

So is the HD TiVo the solution to this problem, or is it the problem itself??

Lucky for their insurance company that when I got home nobody had walked off with them either time..

The likelihood of UPS being nice and leaving the package is inversely proportional to how badly you want that package ASAP.

It seems like whenever I order something that has a value over $500 that UPS leaves it at the door. But if I order a $10 to $20 item they leave a note saying I need to pick it up at their facility which is 45 minutes away. They can't explain to me why they always do that. Now I just have the items shipped to a location where I paid for a mailbox and they will accept my UPS/FEDEX packages for me and hold them until I pick them up.

Absolutely, I also use my business address for all my mail and package delivery. HOWEVER, if Fedex is being used make certain the person creating the label specifies it is a BUSINESS address so it ends up on the right kind of truck. It can save you 1-2 days of delays if you live in a large metropolitan city.

Okay, this cracked me up. The guy got a new SD TiVo with a dead hard drive on march 2, DirecTV shipped him a new one, and this strip is the result:

Funny, cause I'm doing that right now

I've got mine being sent to my office, so I'm not worried about that. But it'll be interesting to see how they deal with my credit card: it has a $500 daily limit to limit fraud. I either have to know 24 hrs in advance that a big charge is going to hit, or it needs to be broken up into two charges on two different days. I put a "special note" in the order to that effect, but I'm guessing with all the mania around getting everyone their tivos, such special requests may fall through the crack. Of course, I guess it'll get noticed when the card gets declined. :-/

Posted by: Kamakzie

That fraud limitation deal is a nice thought but a real pain sometimes.

1) Working from home that morning.
2) Taking a single Halcion around 12:00.
3) Stepping into the dentists office around 1:00.
4) Waking up in a sitting position on the couch in the rec room starring at the Now Playing list with the TiVo remote in my hand at about 5:00.

The intervening four hours between 1:00-5:00 remain a complete mystery to me, though my wife says I had quite a lively conversation with everyone at the dentist's office. All-in-all, highly recommended unless you have some secrets you might spill while under-the-influence.... :D

VE said that the charge would appear a few days before shipping IIRC. That gives some time to work out the charge card issues.

Darin, you should just call the credit card CSR and let them know that you authorize the charge in advance. Just tell them approx. how much will be charged, by what vendor, and approx. date. They should be able to put a note on your account stating that you are authorizing that payment to be made. I always do this when making large purchases on credit card....especially over the internet or phone order.

Posted by: Darin

Well, I could do that, but wouldn't it still get kicked back when they try to run it, since that stuff is all automated?

Hey, I just realized something. If my OTA antenna does a good job of pulling in the HD locals, I can get rid of the local's package from DTV. I will save 5 bucks a month. The HD-Tivo will pay for itself in 200 months!!!!!!

Sure, if:

1) You only have one TV or
2) You can successfully split the antenna to all your other TVs without degrading reception and
3) You don't need any VHF channels for the non-HD sets (assuming that your area, as most, has all the DTV channels on UHF and the analog mixed between VHF and UHF)

I don't think I'd try to float a business plan on that kind of ROI though... ;)

You have a job and work? I figured from all your posts here that you were a stay at home kind of person... :)

Posted by: billcoff

It looks like I might have made the right decision. I notice the Hughes HTL-HD receiver is selling for $299 at Best Buy and Circuit City. Used to be $499. The Samsung SIR-160 is now $449 at Circuit City. Was $599. I sold the one I got in the $99 deal on Ebay for $400. Also sold my RCA DTC-100 in January right after I preordered and my Series 2 TIVO. I've been without HD for a while, but at least have I have the money in hand when the new one is out.

For all you worry warts who are afraid they may miss UPS the day your treasure arrives.

Whether or not a sig. is required is ENTIRELY dependent on the shipper. If the shipper insures the package over a certain amount, or if he specifically requests a signature, then a UPS driver won't be able to leave the package at your doorstep.

I strongly suspect that VE will require your signature for proof of delivery.

Way to get around this:

-IF- it is ok, and you feel safe about them leaving the package by your door, you can write them a note and tape it to your door. The note should explain that you give permission to them to leave the package, it should also include the tracking number, the name of the addressee and the addressee's signature. Under those circumstances, most UPS drivers will happily leave the package.

You could also ask them to deliver the package to a nearby neighbor.

In all circumstances, be very friendly and polite in your note.

Works for me. :D

Posted by: PJO1966

don't forget to put your signature on the note... it couldn't hurt.

Posted by: Kamakzie

Or just take off work the day it is supposed to arrive. Use a *cough* sick day :)

found a flaw with my idea. the hr10-250 will make me watch even more TV, which results in less exercise and overeating which means that I won't make it the 20 years needed to see the recoupment of the cost.

hmmmmmm, maybe I can sue Tivo for making a life threatening device. I bet they are working on other enhancements to make Tivo even more addicting.

Just got off the phone with The Good Guys. They expect their first shipment to arrive at their warehouse on April 10th (that's what their computer says). They have over 300 pre-orders at this point; I'm #26.

Looks like I'll be watching The Masters live in SD. Crap!

Since there only a fews days left to the start of production, would it be possible for Robert to give us a status update?
Based on his understanding, are things still on schedule? Is he going to California to receive the units?
Any new information would be greatly appreciated.

Posted by: dropper

I just read that there will be a short delay in the startup of the production, due to a last minute bug. They have assured the major retailers that the problem will be fixed ASAP, but there may be an issue if the problem is not solved before the ramp up of their other new product for DirecTV, since it will have priority. They are advising retailers to hold off on any new pre-orders.

Just kidding. See, this is how rumours get started. Just thought what the worst possible thing to read might be and went with it. Sorry, if I gave anyone a heart-attack.

One thing to consider about that. An HD local will take up much more space than a DTV local. There's little enough HD space on the thing already, like 30 hours, vs 200 hours of SD. I'd keep the locals just for the saving in disk space.

I forsee the problem of having to decide which to record, so I can have quality or quantity.

The real answer is of course to upgrade the thing. When you can get about 1TB in there, then I'll be a little less concerned about recording HD.

For that very reason, I'm keeping the HDVR2 for SD programming and using the HR10-250 for only HD content. The HD will always have priority for watching to keep space free.

Now I just have to get a good remote that can control them both.

I want to keep my SD. So where do I get the remote or what do I do to avoid conflict between the two TIVO's?

Posted by: MichaelK

do a search or read the manual that came with your SD. Basically you can assign each Tivo and its corresponding remote and identifier from 1-9. So you can have 9 diffenrt units all next to each other and they will only respond to their own remote. You can buy a replacemtn remote that has a 1-2 switch to switch between 2 units (I think they are for sale on tivo.com, but maybe directv.com- i'm sure its been posted somplace)

I'm only planning on keeping the one box. 2 boxes do not pass the WAF test.

It'd be pretty simple for me to do 2 boxes in my Pronto remote, in fact I'm going to have to for use in the changeover period.

I'm usually the same. Except this year, I've already started. I've reached the age where I just can't bounce back from spring ahead... that lost hour kills me for a couple of weeks. So I'm easing in to spring this year. This past weekend, I set my alarm 15 mins early. I'll do another 15 this weekend, and so forth. Hopefully I'll be so ready for it, I'll remember to change all the clocks.

What new, relevant information do you expect to find here, at post# 2,277? The information on how or where to pre-order has already been posted back in the first few pages. Doug has already stated that the updated list will be posted towards the top of the latest odd numbered page (so therefore, it's actually somewhat dependent on new posts for updates). You can bet when these things start shipping, someone will start a new thread. There's really nothing left to say here, so as it's been stated before, this has become a place to waste time until it's here. I really don't understand what else you expect to find here.

I'm guessing you don't get invited to many parties?

My wife asked me what I am going to do once I get my perfect high definition Tivo. What am i going to Tivo? Duh! I'll Tivo just like I always have. Jeopardy, Dr. Phil, Food Channel, and the occasional movie or sporting event. And when I'm done with that, I'll cycle through my 200 channels looking for something to watch.

Except now, I won't have to switch back and forth between SD and HD. Life is good!

Posted by: SteveWinNJ

I'm already seriously considering a second unit. With HDTV's in the bedroom and FR, I know that wherever it goes I'll be missing it sorely elsewhere.

Is there such a thing as love BEFORE first sight? ;)

If you don't like the way this forum is moderated then by all means please find another forum. We'll be heart-broken, but we'll get over it. (over it!)

Do the first 200 still ship in 4 days? I hope as soon as any confirmation on shipping occurs a whole new thread will start. This one has drifted past Mars.

Hmmm... spend a little more time in the forum and you'll understand how rambling on works. The signal-to-noise ratio in this thread isn't reall yall that high. Consider that if absolutely all the completely unrealted posts were removed from this thread, people would still be wading through a lot of stuff that isn't related -- likepeople reporting their order positions/dates, or people not bothering to read the first XXX posts and just asking a question that might've been asked and answered XX times before.

All the really relevant info available is pretty much summed up in my one constantly-moving post, anyway.

I think we're looking at 4 days to the beginning of production of the units. But that's sort of conjecture, as it's never been really all that clear if the dates we heard were start of production or start of first shipments.

Shipments! It's the start of shipments! (please let it be the start of shipments!)

I've unsubscribed from this thread because posts like the one above is rambling and it unnecessarily fills my inbox.

I've got better things to do with my time.

See you when units arrive.

Now see, how are you ever going to YAMM with that kind of attitude?

Oh, my card hasn't been charged yet, either. Which is good since I don't have my tax refund yet :) It's the delicate balance between wanting this machine as soon as possible, but not before my refund is direct-deposited into my account...

But you won't know when to expect it to arrive without us! That's no fun. :(

In any event, within about a week we should get some concrete info about how things are going to work, so drop back in and things should get back on topic real quick. Right now there's just a big void of any information at all.

Rather than bitch and moan about this thread, why don't you get off your lazy a$$ and start another one about HD Tivo pre-orders.

OK, it's been 2 weeks since i last posted. In that last post i was told to start to worry if I didnt receive an email in 2 weeks. I am starting to get worried as it looks like my order, which was placed right after the we just reached 219 post will now put me potentially out of the first 350!? Any idea what is up with that? I just would like a straight answer without having to read 2000 posts of junk. I read for about an hour and said screw it, this is just too much! :o

The straight answer is you might not receive an email as quickly as that since you're not in the first 350; Robert's concentrating on getting the paperwork together on that group first since the first shipment of units won't cover everyone in it, then will move on towards people further down on the list.

As to why you're not in the first 350 when you thought you were is because people at VE on the phones were supposed to be referring people to the web site for orders but apparently were taking them over the phone a lot, and he didn't become aware of that till a couple days had passed, so that affected the counts a lot the further into it you were.

Doug,

R U sure that it's the first 350?

It looks to me like it's the first 300, not too many responses after 300 on your listing.

I received the paperwork when everyone else did but I haven't heard what place I am at. Looking at Doug's list I appear to be somewhere in the 330 340 range I hope. :) Looks like not many at all above 300 got an email regarding their place in line.

man that really sucks. any estimate on how far back being 351 puts one as far as shipping is concerned? 1 week? 2 weeks?

THe whole thing changed from the original expectations of delivery.

At first, Robert was expecting to get about 300-350 units in the first shipment.

Then news came out that there'd by one earlier week of production -- a partial week as they ramp up. The information was that about 200 units would be shipped from that week.

So that meant some portion of those 200 units will get to Robert for fulfillment of orders earlier than expected. Is it 50? Is it 100? Is it 150? Nobody knows yet.

The next week would then be the first week of full production, and estimates have been tossed around that means 400 to 800 units (I personally believe the 800 unit figure is the accurate one, but YMMV).

How many will Robert get of those ~800? Again, anyone who really knows hasn't said, so we're all left guessing again. I'd bet Robert sees more than half of them. So now we're around maybe 500 units shipped by the second week of production.

Then how many does he get from future weeks? I'd further guess he's still high up on the priority list and will get more than half of them again until he's filled all existing orders.

So using the baseline as the week the first units get delivered, people in the 350-400 range will probably see their units a week later.

But this is all just a guessing game; don't take my word about it as gospel unless we get more concrete info from someone in a position to know.

Doug:

I'm so far down the list (2/5/04) that I've just been lurking. FWIW I noticed I'm sandwiched between 2 #13351"s - 1 on 2/4 which must be wrong based on my order # and 1 on 2/8 which is probably correct.

Thanks for all the time spent on the list.

Just a thought - Would it be easier for Robert to post the docs still needed by many of us for us to download?

No email from valueelectronics (yet).

Chris, you don't have PM's configured or I'd send you a private message.

This, as pointed out to me, looks to conflict with other info; the order numbers aren't at this point on 2/4 and in fact another person has reported the same order number.

Could you re-check the confirmation info you have and send me the correct info so I can update the list with it?

Well more than that... I think it's more likely in the mid-1,000's right now, based on looking at the order numbers. Up till a week ago it seemed pretty safe to use that to count; now that the Dish Network/Viacom problem has been generating a lot of orders, it's probably not as safe to use that method from that point forward.

I am pretty sure I'm 76th in the queue, here's my clue:

ken erickson 12548 1/16/2004 4:32:45 PM #75
SFWidescreen 12550 1/16/2004 4:36:49 PM
jkeane 1255x 1/16/2004 4:37:02 PM #77

I got the extra documents by email from Robert on 2/28 and again on 2/29. I faxed them back in on 3/2. I have not yet received a confirmation by email or PM that VE received the docs or my queue position. It looks to me like pretty much everyone else pre-300 in the queue has confirmation.

I've sent an email, with no response. I called and got someone who said not to worry, but couldn't confirm my order because he didn't have access to the database.

Is there anyone else who:
-Expects to be in the first shipment
-Has returned their secondary paperwork, and
-Has not yet received confirmation or a queue position?

And while we're predicting, I'm going to be optomistic and say 3/31 at 3:14pm for my delivery.

"The supense is terrible. I hope it will last"

edited to correct fax date to one that exists.

I see we have a few snippy "Give me only pre-order info" in this thread, people. I can see how some only want to get info on that while others are enjoying just general chit chat info while they wait. Since this thread has long gone by any discipline, it is way too late to put the horses back in the barn. For those that want to have only super important pre-order info, I suggest you begin a new thread clearly titled as such. It will be a short thread but I guess that is the desire. As for me, I like this thread and its wealth of noninformation, excluding, of course, Dswallow's hard work and diligent efforts to let people know where they stand.

Robert's been good about updating the web site to reflect delivery expectations in a conservative manner.

And it bears reminding... if it turns out you find you can get the HR10-250 somewhere else sooner because someone else actually has one in stock, Robert lets you cancel the order without any penalty and will refund your deposit.

Remember that you should use the link at the top of the pre-order list to order because the order form available to the general public does not include the discounts based on the deposit you place on your order. Those are only available to TC/AVS forum members via that specific link to the order form.

Well, add me to the list (at the bottom) Order #1390x

I figure if I can get one sooner I have no risk so why not pre-order, even this late in the game.

I do hope that the Networks offer us some good Replacement shows in the meantime.

I can't be absolutely sure, but my guess would be no since one is a TIVO product and one is a MICROSOFT product. But you could replace the Ultimate with a regular DirecTivo for probably less than you can sell the UTV on Ebay.

I never received a confirm on my faxes to VE. I called and was told that they don't cofirm faxes, but that if there was a problem with the order, they would contact me.
On doug's list I am number fifty something, but I never received a formal place number from VE.
I feel a little bit like I'm living on the edge, but I figure it'll all get sorted out eventually:D

Given the numbers just of the electronic orders, 131xx would put you around #600 I think?

I'm 125xx (I think, this is off the top of my head) and #56.

Hey Doug -

Seeing as though you seem to have some 'inside information', do you (or Robert) know why we keep talking about that magic 350 mark, yet VE's emails confirming people's places in line stopped at 300? I am one of those people who ordered in the AM on 1-19, but I did it over the phone and would love to know how that has affected my position, if at all.

Last week a call to Wendy resulted in her telling me that I "should" be in the first 350, but emails would be going out immediately to confirm the top 350. I faxed in my paperwork (like many others) yet still don't see anybody getting confirms past 300.

THoughts?

I called and spoke to someone who said he thought I had likely just missed the first batch (I still predict I'm #350) and that it would be a while before I received an email.

His main goal is to be getting ready for the first shipment, which will be for some number of units less than 200. Beyond that, I don't really know what he plans to do with regard to getting stuff together to tell people where they area. We have seen a confirmation of #328. I don't know the rhyme or reason of why some people haven't received anything from him yet... especially people who are even in the first 50 or 100. I know we did hear from someone who called the ultimate answer was VE had the wrong email address for them.

As I mentioned somewhere earlier in this bear of a thread, allowing for just 5 minutes per order, it'd take one person something like 2 1/2 weeks of workdays just to get stuff together and email them something. ;)

Posted by: chilidip_tivo

I've called a couple times since I haven't received line placement yet and was told my account was complete and not to worry. I should be just inside the first 100.

I hate to nag them about this, but it does seem strange that most early orders have received notice and I haven't.

I'm going to re-fax my docs in hopes that it triggers a response.

Heh, if their PVRs don't do any type of viewership statistics gathering, I highly doubt that the reason is because of any ethics on the part of Dish. They probably just couldn't prove that their numbers would be reliable enough to be of value to anyone. From what I understand, they have a hard enough time reliably recording the shows people want. :D

I was in the same boat. If you keep the UTV you will need to pay that monthly fee plus the directivo fee. I had 3 UTV units, and although I loved them, I decided to sell them on Ebay while there was still value. I got about $260 apiece for them. I then purchased 3 directiVos to replace them for $100 each. I completely eliminated the DVR fee since I'm a Premium package subscriber.

My only mistake was in not 'negotiating' with Directv. I understand that some have gotten Directivos for well under $100 when using them to replace UTV units.

The UTV units had some pluses over TiVo and TiVo has some pluses. But considering I paid for about half the HD TiVo and lowered my monthly cost, I'm satisfied with the change.

Good luck!

Posted by: Toeside

I'm going to post this here as it doesn't warrant a seperate thread...

Would anyone venture a guess as to the price of the HD Tivo in late August/September? I not its pure conjecture, but that's when I'll be in the market since we are building a house and it will be finished then and my HDTV will be purchased and delivered...

Craig

Posted by: jdk

Future pricing at this point is pure speculation... I'll take my stab:

Once the initial rush passes, in late May, you'll see the street price drop $100, so that everyone buys it at the $899 Robert offers as a "special" now.

By late summer (Aug/Sep), you might see one or two online dealers drop their prices by another $50 to attract orders, but the boxes will still be in short supply such that people actually shipping the boxes still are charging the "full" $899. This situation will remain mostly static until the end of the year.

Again, this is just purely my speculation. No hard facts were involved or harmed with the fabrication of this story.

wow, it has been awhile since I have looked at this thread since we won't know anything till around the 22nd. I didn't see anything new as far as shipping dates, is this correct? I am trying to schedule a HD vacation day to make sure I am home to take receipt of the Tivo. Also here is my complete order info for Doug's list.

Time of Order: 1/13/2004 5:23:05 PM

We're basically just talking for the sake of talking; nothing new here. Yet.

Now that #1 is here though, people are probably gonna start talking to you, so check back regularly for at least a short while. :)

Wow I must say after only a couple hours using this SD Tivo I can see many advantages over my 721 Dish receiver!! :)

That's pretty impressive since you posted this on Thursday and CBS didn't broadcast any games in HD until today.

The mysterious number one! Welcome!

As Doug said, we've really got nothing new, but you're welcome to hang out and shoot the breeze.

Thanks, Firday afternoon and things around the office have finally slowed down & given me a chance to try and read this monster thread. I just want to say the only reason I got the #1 slot is pure luck. I just PM'd Robert out of the blue as he was working on the pre-order page & I couldn't wait for premission from the boss to order and I did it that day. I can't wait for HD Tivo.

Hey now, facts have no place in an Internet forum. Don't confuse the kid. ;)

yurkope,

Hey, you are in STL? Me too... hmmm, I wonder if we know each other somehow. :)

Yea, I called yesterday to check on my situation. I faxed them on March 1st and have heard nothing. They said they will not send any confirmation that they received your fax and you are to assume all is well with your order (which he said was the case for me). He also could not tell me what my place in line is but said it was good (I told him I was between 292 and 300).

We thought you were a myth, a legendary figure. People whispered about the guy that was number one with reverance and awe :)

Boy am I really down the list. My order # is 13576. It was placed on 2/23/04 at 5:46 p.m. I just got word that my HDTV is in and going to be delivered next week. Now its time to get excited. Unfortunately, patience is not one of my virtues.

Becca--

You're new here, so let me say, welcome to your upcoming TiVolution! I must say that you're committed (or might I say should be...) since youre getting both the HD Monitor and the HD Tivo so close together :) Patience is not one of my virtues either.. I tend to check the forums multiple times daily to see if there's any updates. (Just like I'm checking them now-- at a bit after 10pm Eastern).

Hold on tight as I grab a hold of the wheel and yank this thread in yet another direction!

For anyone considering Robert's deal on the Harmony 659 remote I would strongly encourage it. I din't think I could like a remote more than the MX 500 however this is much better. It does take some real time to setup--but allows you to customize exactly as you please.

What kind of deal does he have for this remote? Buy.com is selling it for $149.99 with free shipping.

sparco.com (my first choice for many years) $120.79 plus shipping

Caution, sparco.com, SoftByWeb.com and ebay are not authorized Harmony dealers. You get no warranty when ordering from these or other unauthorized on-line resellers. Don't save $10.00 and lose your warranty.

For us PVR users though, I would really recommend waiting for the new Harmony 688. It's more expensive, but should work for PVR users much better.

I'll go in that direction while waiting anxiously for my HDTivo...I did the exact same thing and had the EXACT same reaction to the Harmony 659 vs. the MX500:cool: but most importantly my wife and daughter love the Harmony (they never quite liked the MX500):D

I would say this is very important. My Harmony stopped working after 6 months and harmony replaced it very fast. If I didn't buy from an authorized dealer I would have been out of luck. Definately worth paying a bit extra.

Harmony talk Good!

HD-TIVO talk Better!

Robert, welcome back from vacation.

March 22 is Monday!

Any new info that you could offer would be appreciated!

HD-TIVO--need input!!!!!!!!!!

Dave

I agree; I'm trying out a 659 right now and really like it, but not having full set of transport buttons (skip and replay) is rather inconvenient. The 688 will have these, so I'm probably going to hold till then.

I would definitely like to support Robert (bought -- ahen, pre-ordered) my HDTivo from him, but best price is best price. Try BlueDo.com for an autorized dealer with good prices -- and see if Robert can match!
