I just programed the the Info and Exit buttons to perform the skip and replay options.

Mine says "Replay and Advance" on the display along with thumb up & thumb down. I just have to reach up to the little white buttons and it works fine.

(Also, I think I'm #202, order 12671)

Probably, but we'll have to see how well they implemented the changes we discussed at CES. The lack of separation between a lot of the buttons made it harder to operate by touch than the 659. Also, the text on some of the buttons was smaller than the 659 (not good for old eyes like mine ;) ). The latest pictures show an improvement in that area, but I'm reserving judgment until I get my hands on one.

OK, how sad is this? Every time Doug posts the pre-order list, I check to see if my place in line has changed. I don't know what I'm thinking. It's not like I'm hoping one of the first eight people cancel their order or bite the bucket or anything. ;)

Our Harmony avs/TC special is very competitive, go to the private avs/TC page to see this offer.

Monday afternoon I will have a conference call update on the first two shipments of HR10-250's. Two weeks ago was my last update, in which the first allocation of HR10-250's were scheduled to ship from Mexico the week of March 22 '04.

Is there still a chance that you will be shipping the units from a location other than in Scarsdale?

I considered it, but I use the Info button, and I programmed LiveTV to the exit button. I really need those 2 more (skip ahead, skip back) to keep me one-handed in my TiVoing...

Good guys just called. They said they are getting their fisrt shipment (450 units) into their San Jose wharehouse on Tuesday. The units are now in San Diego customs and will clear Monday afternnon. I can pick mine up in San Jose or wait til Thursday afternoon for delivery here in Sacramento. The new list price is $879!!!

Not fair for me to joke around eh? Nah, haven't heard anything yet and still hoping my order with Robert beats the Good Guys. GG has no news whatsoever yet on the order!

If the first shipments were supposed to ship the week of 3/22/04, and now there is a conference call on 3/22/04, does that spell D-E-L-A-Y?

YES!! I have emailed (no response), called (I was told that I would be receiving an email right away - but I didn't), and sent PM to Robert (which he did read). And I still haven't received my paperwork, or an explaination of the delay.

Note to self; set alarm for 0200 so as to leave early for Fair Oaks, must find "Joe" and inflict much harm. Be sure to swing by store for milk on way home.

Funny, why does my To Do list have the same color scheme as the TiVo Comm pages? Oh wai

P*=PrimeStar, E*=EchoStar, *C=StarChoice... then people started using D* for DirecTV because, I suppose, they were a bit clueless why the "*" was chosen in the first place in the other abbreviations. I attribute it to just general user stupidity. ;) Your opinion may vary.

One 'theory' on the D* thing is that it differentiates from 'DTV' which is 'Digital TV'... Works for me. Anything with a star in it is a satellite service. I've even seen V* but I sorta draw the line there because Voom is so short and can't be confused with others.

I'm praying it does - it seems to be hardware [software?]related, I've tried 2 standalone HD receivers and 3 different D* HD receivers and only one did get all the Phoenix local OTA stations guide data. That receiver is the Hughes HTL-HD, however even though it has the Hughes label I'm informed that receiver is made by LG [Zenith's parent company].

While a bit off topic.....I am a 2 month TIVO owner and am looking forward to becoming a continuing TIVO fan after receipt of the HD version...so this question that I can't find covered in many other forums.

How do you program to record an entire baseball game...or any other sporting event...that does not have a fixed time. In other words...on FSN the major league games are usually scheduled for 3 hours....but often in fact they can run longer.

Is there anyway to "program" the recorder to record until the event actually ends...or do I have to just record manually and end that recording in the same manner....manually?

Thanks

Posted by: midas

Well you don't have to program it manually, but there is also no way for Tivo to know when the game ends. What I do is pad the time in the season pass manager by an extra hour. Very seldom will they run more than 1 hour over. If you haven't found the padding options yet, let me know and I'll go into more detail.

Posted by: tomr

Well, I've been away in the mountains of Colorado for a week skiing, no internet access and I'm just now checking up on our new "toy".

From what I can gather Robert is expecting a conference call today to receive an update on production/shipping. So really there has been no change. Am I correct?

Glad to see everyone is waiting patiently :D I was hoping (dreaming) to hear that the first unit was shipped early! Oh well. It's the week of the 22. It has arrived. Hopefully so will our HD Tivo's.

Posted by: tarmack

Midas,

Thanks for the reply....I just went through the menu and setup buttons on the remote but did not come across on how to "pad" the recording time......however when I dug out the Samsung DVR manual.....lo and behold...on page 61 I found HOW...and thank YOU very much!

True, but my Harmony back light did not work out of the box and they are doing a direct exchange, sending me a new one then I will send them the broken one. If I purchased from a non-authorized dealer then I would be SOL on that function. No big deal for the back-light but would have been a $140 mistake if the device was completely inop.

when you are about to hit record. Look for the options to the right. arrow over and hit select. it will allow you to start or stop recording after the event time. I usually add a half hour to sporting events to be sure.

edit: sometimes you need to hit season pass and other options, then the options button.

That's pretty much a given, seeing how even current DirecTV HD receivers have guide data for the OTA channels. BUT, it's not foolproof... there are currently three local channels that I don't get guide data for. Although I don't know this for fact, I suspect it may be because those local stations are incorrectly identifying themselves in the digital PSIP data. Or maybe DirecTV has them mapped wrong. But something somewhere is awry. My HD receiver also has analog NTSC tuners, and the analog channels are fine... it "knows" that NTSC channel 11 is my local NBC channel, and therefore gives me guide data. It doesn't, however, seem to understand that 10-1 is the digital equivalent.

I don't know yet if this is a problem that will carry over to the HD-TiVo, but if it is, they will have to fix it very quickly... a TiVo is dependent on guide data for it to work properly. Otherwise, you'd have to manually do a timed recording.

Posted by: borghe

as far as I can tell with my hughes, if I am getting a DirecTV signal my hughes won't give me any PSIP guide data.. if I disconnect directv frmo the box, within a few hours guide data will begin to show up for the channels that are broadcasting it...

for me though it is better to have the directv cable plugged in as directv is currently sending down the HD guide data for all of my channels (and sub-channels) except for I believe 3 (they are sending 13 channels of guide data down for Milwaukee)

Posted by: subspace100

Wow! This thread is getting 2574 views each DAY (on average since thread started on Jan. 14)!!! That's over 107 views per hour (when averaged over a 24 hour day)! Ofcourse the hourly rate is a lot higher than that during the "waking" hours in North America each day.

Getting a lot of posts too! Well over 36 posts/day (almost 37).

I know people on this thread have already talked about the number of posts and views on this thread but I'm bored and starved for information about the HDTiVo so I'm just playing with numbers for fun. :D

Hmmm, I don't think my Samsung ever uses PSIP for guide data. I had the OTA hooked up for about a week or two before hooking up the satellite connection, and I don't remember ever seeing guide data at all until I got the satellite hooked up.

To be fair, ONE person there that I've seen made that comment.

Well it has the potential to be a fiasco. The partial production run this week smacks of a company wanting to make good on the promise to ship Q1 of 2004. Only time will tell if this is being rushed or not.

Actually: My guess is that this is due to the re-branding effort. We know that the device "slipped" by an extra few weeks due to the fact that that it was "dropping" the Hughes name and adding the DirecTV name.

My guess is that the manufacturer already had booked the factory time for another product and could not deal well with the slip. Hence the "short" early production run.

All I can say for sure is that my Series 1 DirecTiVos get guide data from DirecTV for my local OTA HD stations (I can view the listings through tivoweb). It would be reasonable to assume that the HD DirecTiVo will continue to get that same guide data.

Also, comparisons to the Dish 921 are bound to be flawed -- TiVo products actually work. :D

On the Value Electronics site it says :
http://www.valueelectronics.com/avsTC.htm

"Cables included HDMI to HDMI, HDMI to DVI, S, RCA & AC3"

Doesn't mention component video, but we really won't know till it ships.

S'long as we're speculatin', any ideas on how long a HDMI/DVI cable will be included? I presume it is a HDMI cable with a DVI converter that screws on for the monitor end.

I believe you're misremembering??

IIRC, Robert said Monday afternoon.

Probably has something to with "stars" being in space and satellites are in space... that's my guess.

Even if you bought it from an unauthorized dealer, the dealer should replace a unit that was defective out of the box.

Midas,

Sorry to bother you again....today<g> but how the heck do you change the number of posts/messages per page.....so that you are showing 84 pages and I am now showing 126.

Believe me....I really have tried to do my homework....but just can't find that option in the members area.

Thanks again...Tivo'ing with padded times for baseball.

Go to the top of the page under 'MEMBERS AREA' and choose 'PREFERENCES'. There you'll see 'DEFAULT POSTS PER THREAD'.

We seem less obsessed when there's only 63 pages of posts in this thread. ;)

yeah, that's the ticket!

I can use this at home, too. if I pay Robert with hundred dollar bills, then I only spent 10 bills!

Man am I impatient. I have already checked three times this afternoon to see if robert posted some info yet from his conference call. He may not even post the info today.

3 times?! That's it!!!! I've been here about 50 times today!!! Basically everytime I get one of those subscription E-mails arrives telling me someone posted something in this thread I'm here to see if there's any news! I know it's sad but I haven't been this excited about a new electronics purchase since I got my SAT-T60 (which I still love).

Well... given that I'm on a 56k dial up connection right now I can't actually keep up with the "rapid fire" posts... In this case I read Darin and Dougs posts all in just ONE visit.

Please don't tease me :( It's killin' me!

I thought I had read somewhere in these forums that it's possible to have an email sent only when a particular person posts (ie Robert). I just tried to find a way to do that, but came up empty. Is it possible to set this up?

Getting a lot of posts too! Well over 36 posts/day (almost 37).

I know people on this thread have already talked about the number of posts and views on this thread but I'm bored and starved for information about the HDTiVo so I'm just playing with numbers for fun. :D

About 156923 of the 174998 views on this thread are mine... ;)

I just decided to leave the page open here on the desktop so I can indulge my obsessive behavior along with everyone else.

Of course I have another page open watching to see if my old HD Rcvr gets any new bids on Ebay...:)

But alas I have an interview coming in and then a staff meeting so I should get a little break and maybe then some real news...

Posted by: leesweet

Yeah, I just come back here and hit refesh every so often... :) Lo and behold, there's usually another page at the bottom waiting to be read!

As for the emails, these are the bane of AVS/TC. I tell my email client to delete them immediately, since you can't turn them off completely (had a couple of discussions with David Bott on that topic).

Hey Doug,

Like everybody else I'm obsessively Compusively re-reading the list to see if my rank has changed (and in my case it does because I'm so far down the line.) It looks like you sort the list based on date/time but that doesn't match the order number after a while (around 12996 I think is the first discrepancy... Actually, there maybe some before but with all the xxx, it's hard to tell ;) ).

In my example, how can Robert L get 13136 on 1/26 and Rick Sass get 13131 on 1/28? I know for sure that I'm 13137 on 1/28 so...

Anyway, one more little things for people to check the next time you republish "The Monster" to see if it affects there ranking !

I'm ready for HD DTiVo,whenever it ships. I just put up an OTA antenna over the weekend. $20 for a discontinued model at Rat Shack, it comes with diplexers so I don't need to run an extra co-ax. I've been suspicious of the diplexer idea, but it has no noticible effect on the Sat signal and it makes things a whole lot easier.

There's a couple places where there are discrepencies in there. I attribute them to someone making a mistake in providing the info to me and figured that when I get more sequence numbers they'll generally correct themselves. I've also been guilty of just erroneously putting things in the wrong place sometimes, and when I find them I tweak it around.

It must feel frustrating when someone makes a post that doesn't add anything to the thread. No info, no updates.

All those people who have to rush back to the thread just in case its important, and its just some guy rambling with no real reason to post anything!

Don't you hate that! :D

(Confession: I've been doing it all day also..... I have responded TO TIVOCOMMUNITY EVERY email I've gotten all day, and all the AVSFORUM ones too!)

I got a great Idea, lets all start calling robert to ask him whats up with the afternoon conference call, this way we will tie him up and he won't have time to post some more info. THat really drive everyone else crazy. HEHEHE

How can you even PRETEND to be doing some work when this thread is being updated every 2 minutes !;)

Actually, it's odd, most recent post have happened on odd minutes time (27, 25, 23, etc...) Not that there's anything wrong about it. Or that it means anything.

Anyway, rambling, rambling, where's my TiVo (yeah right, I'm in the first 700 bazillions on the list, I'm expecting shipment right in between 2007 and when hell freezes over  ), etc...

How about doing a statistical analysis and graphical chart of posts based on time of day for all 2,535+ of them and for the subset of them made by people who preordered. I actually thought about it at one point a week or two ago. Though I wanted to do it geographically using MapPoint, but didn't have location info for every person posting so the geek factor was reduced and I lost interest. ;)

Its a 15-2180 (which has about 1ft cirular UHF antenna and 3 ft of VHF loops). What I forgot to mention is I don't know how well if it'll work with Digital transmissions, its pretty cruddy with the current analog. Its an experiment, I'll start small and see how big I need to get.

I also keep e-mail notification turned on, but have my mail client set up to automatically delete them. I do it only for the automatic subscription. It's a shame the auto-subscription and email notification aren't separate options. Kind of a waste to be sending out emails to those of us who don't really want it.

Posted by: richierich

Well, I'm Number 22 on the list and getting ready to install my Channel Master GainMaster 36" X 24" triple LNB dish to help reduce rainfade. I added a 4 X 8 multiswitch so I can add the HD Tivo. Then after the Masters I'll send it off to Hinsdale to get the hd upgrade with an additional 320 gig hd. That should get me around 65-70 hours of recording capacity. Can't wait to watch the Masters in HD and be able to record it for later viewing, if in fact it gets here by April 8 (I'm having it overnighted). This is just like having a BABY as far as the anticipation goes. I'm glad I got my order in early.

I bought the biggest one that my local installer could get his hands on. He told me it was overkill and intended for commercial purposes but I never believed in the overkill theory myself. I have to wait until it gets better outside so they can install it for me. My roof is very steep and I won't go on it myself. My current antenna is about 2/3 the size of the new one but it had trouble getting some of the HD channels previously.

Well, fine, if you live in this one thread like some here... :D :D but I'm in dozens of threads at AVS (and a few others here) and I want to see them in my CP when something new pops up. I do *not* want the emails, especially the dozens from this one, but no way around it. As was said, the two can not be decoupled, not with the software as it. It's best to accept it, and have your email client trash the emails.

Posted by: dr_mal

I hadn't realized the distinction between subscribing to a thread and wanting to get e-mails. I never go to User CP unless I'm changing an option, so I hadn't thought that people checked there for updates instead of in their e-mail.

Posted by: dave3

I bought the biggest one radio shack had, 13', so that I can get locals from accross the long island sound from conneticut. Now that NYC has the locals on the empire state building, there is no point to the 13' monster. a 4' combo vhf/uhf is fine for up to 25 miles from the towers.

I always use User CP to see what threads I'm subscribing to have new replies, then move on to browsing new posts or just through individual forums. I hate BBS software that doesn't let me just see what I'm subscribed to.

Posted by: leesweet

No, the CP is great, since it shows you all the threads you've sub'd to. Now, it's not perfect, since the 'last came to the site' clock isn't perfect, but I check AVS/TC from several PCs, and can't get my email from all of them.

CP is very useful, especially since it also shows you the 'pieces' of AVS/TC that you are interested in. I don't care about 'UK Tivos' at TC or 'Plasmas' at AVS, so those forums aren't there, for example.

You need to build some 30-foot reflector walls in the right places so you can just aim your antenna in the main direction towards where the largest cluster of stations is and get the off-axis channels reflected off the walls via the antenna's rear lobe of reception. ;)

Well, it's not like this thread isn't something you know to look at, so you can pretty easily just keep a shortcut on your desktop or in your favorites right to it. Heck, make it your home page! Hmmmm, the SST-668 from Harmony looks like it is a DELAY! Got an email from them today saying they are shooting for end of March or beginning of April. Originally they were scheduled for mid-March. Argghhhh!

This thread is getting a life of its own. Doug, you are doing a great job with the updates, but man, they are taking up almost a whole page now. Got a link?

So, what is the big deal about HD-TiVo anyway? You have to have decent Hi-Def programming to make it work, and with my D* subscription, there is little of that. Yeah, I am being slightly sarcastic here, but really, the amount of HD available is still anemic. As I said a few days ago, I emailed D* complaining about the lack of HD channels. I pay in extra $10 or so a month for their HD package which is WEAK! They left a message on my answering machine this morning to call them to discuss the issue. So... I called the number they gave me and the D* rep had no clue why I was calling. I informed them of my email and the return call D* made. She said....oh, we are working on it! Yeah, she was going to say anything differently? Why the heck did they even call me back? She was nice, and I was nice, but come on, I am not an idiot that should have to call them back, explain my email and then be told no information at all. I expected them to at least comp me a free month of HD or something. I didn't care if they did, or didn't, as the $$ was not the real issue. The real issue, and Doug, I think you missed it in my Voom post, was to get as many people as possible pumped up to tell D* that there is HD competition out there. Yeah, I know Voom basically sucks, but anything we can use to leverage our lobbying effort is good, is it not. Doug, I was hoping you'd jump on the bandwagon instead of dismissing Voom altogether. Hey, Voom might just help get D* more interested in increasing their HD production.

I am looking forward to watching the Master's in HD. Is it going to be in the top quality HD from my OTA station or all the locals able to transmit in different HD qualities. Not sure that makes sense but some of the stuff I get in HD via OTA is not as good quality as others. Very confusing to someone who hasn't spent a lot of time studying the differences.

Wow, thanks for the rant! Now I will get off and leave room for Robert to post his update.

I am just hoping the delay in information about the conference call is Robert making the arraignments to pickup my HD Tivo at customs.

My current issue, for April, of the DirecTV magazine lists over 200 HD movies for the month....and add to that the usual Discovery highlights new each month...I feel that I will have plenty to record in HD.

I have a favorite movie time of about 4 p.m. in the afternoon before the Fox news channel takes me to the days events for most of the evening. Grin.

Later in your post you mentioned VOOM. Gotta agree with you there....I have been a customer of them TWICE now. Subscribed initially in November of last year...unsubscribed in Feb in order to get my 800 bucks back after having nothing but problems with reception and lock ups.

Then..when they introduced that $0 down lease program I resubscribed on March 3...well that lasted about a week because my "new" Motorola box began lockups about 3 days later.....I called customer support to order a new box for replacement....but after 45 minutes on hold I simply said screw it....come back and get it again.

They do have 30 HD channels...but their 21 "exclusive" channels held little or no interest for me......10 Cinema channels that mostly ran B and 30 year old movies..and the Monsters and Animania channels....along with the rather "simplistic" News Channel......shows me that they really only have 9 channels of HD....and I already have 7 HD channels with DirecTV.

Get me this HD PRV in my hands I don't need those West feeds....I think I can put it to good use.

That's pretty much how I treated your other post because you explicitly were asking for people to cancel their DirecTV subscription in protest but stated you weren't willing to.

So exactly why should anyone else be willing to?

:)

DirecTV has almost never announced anything until they're ready to do it. Fox HD E/W is about the only exception to that... so the one exception to "never announce before it's ready" is for an HD channel (technically 2 HD channels).

When DirecTV 7S is operational, you will be pleasantly surprised. And it won't matter one iota if you cancel your DirecTV service or not or if anyone else does or doesn't as a form of protest. The plans are in the works and rely SOLELY on the availability of bandwidth to transmit them. And that will come with DirecTV 7S being fully operational.

If it were truly important, I could see bugging him about it with a phone call. But what does it matter, really...

What are the realisitic possibilities...

1) We lied, we started making the units last week and just shipped the first 2,000 of them.

2) We're on schedule as planned. Here's the allocation for everyone...

3) We're running late, here's the new expectation of deliveries...

4) No call occurred

5) The call occurred but they didn't say anything about HD

I think Robert is aware we're all anxious for info of any kind, and he'll post when he posts, if he can talk about what he's told. We'll get our units when we get our units. We won't get them any sooner than that.

So I just don't think it's worth wasting any brownie points with Robert to bug him with a call to get some update on what may have transpired today. He'll tell us if it's important to tell us, when he tells us.

:D

It makes the HD that is available watchable. I have much dread about going back to watching live TV ever again. The HD availablility situation can only get better.

Ordered 1/22/04, 1:13 p.m.

Order # 129**

Posted by: vidiot

So what are we all going to obsess over months after we've got the HD TiVos? What's left?

Posted by: joegolf68

Hi Doug,

I don't think I asked anyone to cancel D*. I said if Voom got enough people to go there, D* would be forced, via competition, to increase HD choices. Not tryinng to be argumenative, especially with someone who has worked so hard for all of us on this project. I still think it is a great idea to let D* know we want more HD choices. Bascially, the entire post was to lobby D*, using Voom as leverage. No confronttion intended Doug. :)

Email D* today and let them know you want more HD choices!!!!

Joe :)

Hey Doug, could you explain you web page to me please?

Heck. Half the problem is not the lack of HD channels, its the lack of HD shows!

Even HD and Showtime are doing upconverts for much of the day. I have RARELY seen true HD on ESPN-HD.

Why waste precious satellite bandwidth for lousy upconverts!

I don't make empty threats. :p

Even so, there's just NOTHING DirecTV can do until it has the additional bandwidth DirecTV 7S gives them. Let's wait to see the satellite launch and go operational without problems, then see what plans we can make to "suggest" DirecTV immediately get more HD content up there.

I saw your statement about not seeing true HD on ESPN. I agree. I still haven't figured out what the heck one HD is over another HD! I am a well educated person but still haven't seen a simple explanation as to why some HD is better than others, why some shows are letterbox and others aren't, why I bought a wide-screen TV and rent a wide screen DVD and still have black on the top and bottom! lol

And for the person that asked if I saw the Master's in HD last year. No. I just bought the HD TV and Samsung before this year's Super Bowl. Yep, got to be one of the one's using the TiVo to look at Janet's show.

For the guy who read my earlier post about getting my unit from the Good Guys and the price change, so sorry. It was meant as humor, the kind we used to exchange in the fire house. No harm intended!!!

I am personally hoping to get mine before I get it, otherwise, I will be very disappointed when that time comes.

I'm alternating between checking this thread and checking my bank account to see if there have been any major withdrawals. I'm still sticking by my prediction...

It's just a place for me to put things I want available on the web; generally they're all very unrelated so I don't make any sort of front end to get to them; if you know where to go you can get there. I toyed with the idea of making the ends of every lightning bolt links, but it just seemed too silly to bother with. But I've gotten this question a few times recently, so I guess people are gettin' curiouser and curiouser about me so maybe I should put something there. ;)

Cool... Thanks for the update!

So, does "scheduled to receive" mean you are definitely going to ship them from your NY location rather than try to meet them as they clear US Customs and ship from there?

Great news Robert! Thanks for the update. Any word on where you will ship from?

Thanks!

Jim

!!!

Well then, I'm quite pleased to have selected 2-Day shipping so 1) I don't have to take delivery on April Fool's Day and 2) I get it in time for the weekend.

Thanks for the update!

Shipping from CA

Posted by: BFS

Nice to be in with an order under 200!!!

Thanks for the update Robert....

Now if they ship from the West Coast directly I'll be really happy not to have to wait till they ship to Robert then out to us.

Didn't hit refresh fast enough - looks like I'll be Tivo'ing HD by April 2nd!!!

Doug - you can update mine with order #137...

Cool Robert! Just a couple more weeks, but then I got to get the dish and all installed.

BTW Robert, are you all going to offer any deals on getting antennas installed in attics?

Just in case you were serious, there are GREAT widescreen and anamorphic primers at The Digital Bits. It's the best explanation I've seen.

Robert are you shipping all orders from Ca, I live 30 minutes from your store, or just the first week? I guess I am in the second or third week, since I am around #345.

Thanks
dave

Posted by: DTV TiVo Dealer

Second shipments are also shipping from CA and should cover up to the first 450 orders. Additional weeks will ship from several FOB points.

Thanks robert for the quick replies.
