How are you folks 'counting' pages? I think I'm using the defaults, and it's '141' for me. (Don't want to be out of the flow, you know.. :) )

Set your configuration to 40 posts per page.

I feel sorry for anyone using 5 posts per page with this thread. ;)

I, along with Doug apparently, set the number of posts per page to the max allowable (40) a loooong time ago. Hell, I'd have all the posts on one page if it would let me.

Ahhhh 71 pages, much better! :D
Posted by: leesweet
Yeah, ahhh! :D I could really tell before when I got to a 'Doug' page, since the slider would go to about a millimeter in height. :)

I'm not usually the paranoid type, but whenever I'm asked to use my SSN for an identifier I request them to provide a randomly generated replacement. I believe they have to. I know VA has to provide you a generated number if you don't want to use your SSN for driver's license number. I know a lot of colleges and universities were starting to do that for student ID numbers way back when I was in school.
Better safe than sorry in these cases since a lot of times you may be considered guilty until proven a victim. There was an awful case about this in the True Stella Awards recently about a couple that were victims of identity theft, proved that the mortgage company was liable (they accepted a phoned in change of address from the crooks along with a request for a new check book for their HELOC), notified the mortgage company as soon as they found out about it, and then still got sued by the mortgage company. Just not a mess to even chance getting caught up in.

But if DirecTV doesn't have it, the odds are none! :D
My wife was a victim of identify theft, so I've seen what a complete PITA it is to resolve. I'll do anything possible to avoid that.
I shred every piece of paper that has my name on it, have an unpublished name and address, opt-out of everything possible through companies I do business with and don't give my SSN to anyone unless absolutely required.
I detest the fact that companies are allowed to use social security numbers as an identifier. For years I had to carry my SSN around in my wallet since it was on my medical insurance card. Finally, this year, they removed it from the card, although they still use it internally.

I can't believe how much time I've spent perusing this thread the last several weeks...and now I've stooped to counting exactly how many spots I am below #328 every time Doug updates his list. My wife thinks I've gone completely insane...
I'm #408 at last count...though based on the order numbers, I'm guessing I'll be much higher and fall in the 3rd shipment instead of the 2nd. Called VE earlier today, and they wouldn't tell me anything. Wish I had called before all the lawsuit nonsense...probably has them spooked.

how hard was it for your wife to straighten everything out. As I understand it you have to fight with everyone on an individual basis. the credit card, the bank, mortgage company. The whole idea of it really freaks me out.
My life used to be simpler, but now I am married with kids, we got accounts all over the place, and I even think the credit card I got when I was in college 15 years ago is still active, not that I have a card anymore.
No SS number for anyone unless They really need it like my bank, my mortgage, the Credit card companies, thats it.
THere was a case on long island a few years back where a guy working for a company that checks credit ratings was selling the SS# of people who had their credit checked when they were buying/leaseing cars. He had stolen about 10,000 SS# and sold them to people in eastern europeon countries!!!!!!!!

I was a victim of ID theft, not too long ago. They made a mistake by trying to get an Amex Blue card, which I already had, so Amex called to confirm it (post giving it to them, ugh). I said, "Hell no!" and they cancelled it. I had to request all 3 credit bureaus restrict my credit, which stopped them cold. I got a few more hits in the next couple of months, then they went away.
I was definately lucky. Reported it to the police, they didn't really care. I don't know why they don't bother, since it would be pretty easy to snag these guys. Just allow some yahoo to use it, track them a bit, and then grab them at the local quicky-mart. It would be easy. If they ordered on line, stake out the pick up point for the package. If the police would do something about this, and crack down hard on the perpetrators, we would see it stop.
Oh, and if the credit agencies actually did their job, it would stop them cold, too. Credit card companies don't care, the police don't care and the credit bureaus don't care. We as Americans need to make them care!

Keith, as quick as the police are to set up speed traps, I've always wondered why they don't deal with credit theft similarly. As you said it would seem to be rather easy these days with the modern authorization systems to track such people down immediately upon use of a card, dispatch police, and arrest them.
Posted by: dave3
I think that our various police agencies don't have the resources and/or place priority for these type of crimes. To them it is no one getting raped or mugged, and the money amounts are too small compared to todays white collar crimes, way to go Martha.
I would love it if this became a presidential campaign issue. I am sooooo tired of all the mud going back and forth.

It's a good idea to check your credit report every 6 months or more to make sure things are going as they should. Actually I think I will do mine again now its been a while.

Same here, They tried to get Amex Blue in my wife's name. She has a corporate acct. so they called her. Only success they had was with Dell (Dell is the Devil!!!) Dell opened an account and shipped them several laptops. We called them to alert them and they WOULD NOT CLOSE THE ACCT! They said it had to remain open during the investigation. 12digital cameras later, they finally closed it.

It boils down to effort-to-reward ratio unfortunately....
I work in the criminal justice field in WA. Anyone here can tell you that this state is reaching epidemic rates of ID theft, mail theft, fraud, etc... There is no punishment because of the workload. PD will not investigate other than a courtesy report until losses reach the 10k range. Prosecution will not occur under 25k. Probation is the only punishment until 4th or 5th conviction. It is all very pathetic...

At the end of the Dell fiasco they finally tracked down the delivery location. It was a meth addict's grandmothers house. The ID thieves order the items, send them to the speed freak that owes them x amount, he gets 10% off his debt and takes all the risk. The tweaker got popped, did 20 days, and put on 2 yrs probation. Oh wow, justice.
It is just too easy for the people who need to get caught, not to.

Well, I would actually think it should fall under Federal jurisdiction for most cases, since people are usually buying goods from other states, or fraudulantly using credit from other states. Maybe Joe Senator can stop thinking about Internet taxes for a bit and focus on Internet crimes?

You'd think.... They have even less time than locals.
Try this for S & G's... Call your postal inspector and tell them your locked mail box was broken into today. Advise them that you were expecting a check for 10k from your kindly Aunt, and think it was stolen. See how much love you get.
"Yes technically it is our jurisdiction, however....."
Are you picking up on the bitterness yet?

That was exactly it. She had to dispute each one individually and put a lock on her account with each credit bureau. There were a total of about 10 accounts opened in her name. Some of the creditors just asked her to fill out a form and they eliminated the account, others had to be disputed for over a year to eliminate the account from her credit history. Several of them claimed monthly that they would take care of it and never did.
It wasn't made any easier by the fact that the police wouldn't even let her open a police report. A couple of companies insisted on getting the police report, yet the police department wouldn't open one. Ultimately, the companies backed down, but it was yet another hassle.
I think that some government intervention is going to be required on this issue. The system has to be tilted more in favor of the individual against whom the crime has been committed.

ID Theft cost Americans in excess of $100 Billion each year.
This is past down to the consumer in everything we buy- including-
HD-TIVO!
Good luck with this terrible issue.

I just read recently that a new law has been proposed in congress or the senate. Basically, if ou are the victim of identity theft, all you would have to do is file a police report with the credit bureaus and you will liable for nothing and it will stop them cold. If I recall correctly, it's got pretty good support and is likely to pass.
I got a call from Gateway a few years ago to confirm delivery of $5000 worth of new computer equipment charged to my Amex Optima (I believe by using a stolen receipt from a restauant). I told them I had not placed an order and they immediately cancelled it. I asked out of curiosity what the delivery address was and it was in an apartment building only a few blocks from where I was living at the time in Brooklyn. I marched down to the local police station not 2 blocks from this building to file a report, they had absolutely zero interest in the matter, these types of crimes do not fall under their jurisdiction apparently. I didn't pursue it any further, of course that's what these people count on.

If you want some warm and fuzzies, I use the service from one of the credit bureaus where they email you a notification about all credit inquiries on your account. That's one good way to be notified quickly about anyone opening accounts that you don't know about. I only have this service from one bureau, but the truly paranoid/safe would have it from all three of the bureaus. Pretty cheap insurance at $70/year or something. Also gives you several complete credit reports a year, including FICO scores.

I've got that as well. I'm not sure its actually worth it though. I recently did that for my wife as well, a Laptop went missing from her work, which might have had sensitive personal information on it, like SSN. So this seems like a prudent idea. They've just changed everything, there are now various levels of service, if you want to be notified the day of any access to your credit report it costs you $99. This also comes with $20k of insurance to clean up the mess after your identity got ripped off.
What does all this have to do with HD TiVo's?

I am so sorry to hear that someone had identity theft. what a miserable group of low life's who do that! I have some friends who went through the same thing. they did their own research and the cops weren't interested in arresting anyone, even though the police were provided the name and address of the perps! fortunately, they knew a detective in the police department who did them a favor and busted the couple doing the thefts. turns out that they had been convicted twice before of the same crime. They got two years in jail!!!! Too bad law enforcement doesn't take this more seriously EVERY time someone is a victim. If you stole two dollars from a store, thy will arrest you, etc., but for some reason law enforcement doesn't have this as a high priority. My friends have their credit screwed up for a long time and have had to spend dozens of hours trying to repair the damage. In my opinion, virus creators are in about the same boat of scum.

Okay, back on topic. (What was the topic anyway?)
I have telephoned VE about 5 times now over the past week requested the forms that need to be completed. Each time, I was handled politely and promptly and was told that the will be either faxed or e-mailed right away. Well, nothing yet. I will PM Robert.
Question: Are these forms individualized or are they generic blank forms? If they are generic, can somebody (dswallow?) PDF it and post it here for download? I would hate to have something as simple as this slow up my delivery.

They're generic, but unless Robert says it's OK, I'd rather not post them anywhere. I will email them; just send me an email asking for them.

A number of times I have seen people refer to having their HD Tivos upgraded by Hinsdale.
Are these wild speculation or after the warranty runs out, can these units be upgraded?
What type of upgrade can be done?
Any info will be appreciated.
Posted by: KCWolfPck
From what I understand....it's all speculation until we get our hands on one and open it up. General concensus is that they will be upgradable as past Tivos were.
Posted by: Kevin L
I've don't recall seeing any post about HD Tivos being upgraded by Hinsdale or anyone else. We're all still waiting for the first units to arrive so some brave soul will crack open the case and see if upgrading is possible at all.
Posted by: KCWolfPck
So....yesterday I called Tweeter to see the status of HD Tivo with them. They asked "which one?". They have a Hughes unit and a Samsung unit in the computer for delivery on April 15th. Anyone else have any info on the Samsung unit?
Posted by: Shark73
The upgrade they are talking about is adding a second hard drive to the unit for additional storage space. Based on prior D* TiVo models, we expect that we will have the ability to add a second drive inside the box.
Some will upgrade before the warranty expires and others will upgrade after.

I work at a small municial police department in Northern New Jersey, 18 miles from Manhatten. That's sad to hear that Washington State doesn't take police reports for Identity Theft. In New Jersey, it's part of Uniform Crime Report (UCR) and we actually have a classification for it to file each month with the state. Too bad it isn't done more widespread.
Along the same lines, we are putting a tremendous amount of resources into Computer Crime Units in the state. We get reports every week or so about bad eBay deals or other scams based on access to personal info. Guard what you need to keep and purge the rest.

Ahhh ... I'm so glad I switched to D* last August. When is Charlie going to learn that you can't do everything in house? Frankly the decision not to license receiver technology to CE vendors will continue to bite him in the rear.
For those of you that remember, I had one of the original Dishplayer PVRs ... boy was that thing a headache.
I expect the DTivo to be fairly stable ... the TIVO software is rock-solid and the Hughes E86 has stabilized as well. Not to say there won't be some problems, but I'll bet it's nothing like the 921.

Don't want to drag this way OT again, but D* is now doing somewhat the same. All future D* STBs will be branded DirecTV. Time will tell if *all* the innards are exactly the same or not. I hope they learned from the Dish debacle.

The "confidential memorandum" was definitely among those Robert didn't want posted here.
There's nothing about the forms that's objectionable, but I presume he wouldn't want every Tom, Dick & Harry without an order to have access to them and be faxing them to him just to confuse things.

Quick Check:
IIRC: The shipment will include and HDMI to DVI coversion cable?
Correct?
If so: Does anyone know if it is a male or female ending for the DVI end of the cable?
This is so I know if I have to order a coversion cable, or a gender changer: As my Plasma is up on the wall, and I have a 12ft DVI cable between the TV and stereo equipment.
And there is no room left in the pipe for another cable, and I would rather spend a few $$$ for an adapter, then to pull all the wires out to get the new one in.

It comes either with an adapter or with a HDMI-DVI cable. Not sure it's been clear exactly which. If a cable, it's unlikely it'd connect to another cable but instead would be designed to connect to the receiver. If an adapter, I'd guess it'd still connect to the receiver and the HDMI cable would plug into it and into the display. The reports are the included cable is about 3 meters / 9 feet long.
Posted by: tremor_f
I think you can safely assume that both the HDMI-HDMI and HDMI-DVI cables will be male on both ends, since they're both full-length cables.

I am #65 on the list. You mention that you will be shipping the first 200 units on Wed. 3/31. I, like many others here, have the unit shipped via 2nd day air. How confident are you that you will be able to ship all 200 units on Wednesday?
I ask because if some don't go out until the next day, it means not receiving the shipment until the following Monday.

The problem I run into running a new cable, is that to get the old one out I have to pull out all 6 cables out of the tube, as the end of a DVI cable is molded plastic that is about the size of a ZIPPO lighter.
Even though I have a 2.5" PVC pipe from point A to point b, there are still some bends in there (at 45degree angles), and there just isn't enough play.
Hmmm... Time to go hunting for a gender changer...

Re: upgrades. I suspect this will be trickier than ever to do -- physically -- due to the crowded innards and no existing 2nd drive bracket.
It will be doable, I'm all-but sure, but a special bracket may need to be fashioned and that might take some time.
I also might personally wait until the Hitachi 400 is available. If I'm going to upgrade mine, I think that squeezing every bit of capacity out is really vital. With the TV season already nearing an end, the urgency is really for next season. Perhaps by then an even larger Maxtor will be out.... :) Can you say twin 500s? Oooooh.....

That is what I wanted to wait for but it will be a while before they are in my price range. I just broke down 5 days ago and got a Denon 3805 and LOVE IT! For now it will have to do until HDMI switching comes down to the $1500 level.

The Onkyo TXNR-1000 is due out next month. 2 HDMI inputs in, 1 out.
Not sure how much it will be, but Onkyo has always been competitive in their pricing.

Damn this HD! I got a TX-SR800 last year so I could have component (replaced my TX-DS676). Now I'll have to replace the 800 just so I can switch HDMI. Sheesh, when will it end

That is a heavy duty piece of equipment. Check out a review: http://www.audioholics.com/news/ind..._pr_2004-02.htm
It has an MSRP of $4000.

I think it would cheaper to buy a monkey to switch the cables. Come on here. This is really ridiculus.
Thankfully I only have one device that will be using the HMDI/DVI port on my HDTV.(The HDTiVo of course.) :)

Wow, the back of that thing alone is worth the price of admission!
If you want to have some fun... give this receiver to your grandma (or anyone who is not "handy" with this sort of thing) and say "All you gotta do is hook it up. See ya!" :D
Any ideas about what the street price may be?

When do you think it'll be available? Considering it's in production now and about to ship you would think they would put it somewhere.
Along the same lines, now that there is no more hughes.com, where do we go for product info? Will they just stick the manual on the directv manuals page?

Oh, don't I know it. I would have been happy to buy the HDMI last year if they had it. I'll just have to see what the 1000 costs and eBay the 800.
Edit: wait, never mind, I just saw the MSRP.
I'll just get a switch instead.

Its not even going to be branded as Hughes so I wouldn't expect to find it there anyway. Its more likely to end up at DirecTV <http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/learn/manuals.dsp>, but its not there yet.
We know where it isn't, I'd like to know where it is.

Question for those who've ordered from Robert previously.
Does Value Electronics typically send out a shipping notices with UPS/Fedex tracking numbers after they've shipped your order? Or at least a shipping notice so you could phone and get a tracking number if desired?
Not all places do so I'm curious. I want to be able to make sure I'm home on the day this is supposed to arrive.

Both the Gefen and the Monster are passive devices. Either will do the job.
The Monster looks like it's designed to plug directly into a source or display device at the end of a cable run.
The Gefen is designed to mate 2 cables with different physical interfaces.
Since you'll be getting cables with the HDTivo, you could use either -- but the Monster might be a better choice because it'll result in a shorter overall cable path.

Interesting... I heard the TX-NR1000 was going to be have a price in the $1500-2000 range, and that there would be a Integra branded version with a base MSRP of $4000
Yep in the April Sound&Vision magazine (page 77) They list the TX-NR1000 for $2000 with 9 modules, the the build to order Integra DTR-10.5 that lets you add firewire and HDMI for $3500. I would guess this is newer more accurate information than what was released in January at CES.
There isn't enough information in S&V to know if the TX-NR1000 will have HDMI or an option for it.... But they are supposed to both be out in April.

I just called our local High End Audio Store (The Little Guys), they make Tweeter look like Radio Shack...
The guy on the phone first:
Had no idea that Tivo was releasing an HD Tivo.
2nd was surprised that it was DirecTV releasing it with them
Stunned that is slated to ship next Wednesday...
Just goes to show, how little even the HIGH end players know about what products are in the pipeline.
I was calling to see if they carried the HDMI-DVI converters in stock, as the monster cable one just doesn't look right on the web page.
OneCall.com had a 1ft cable to do exactly what I needed, but it is not shipping until first week of april.
Link
I guess I could live with a wire dangling outside the wall for the first week.

It looked correct to me... what makes you say it doesn't look right?
It'll need to plug into a DVI connector on a device and provide an HDMI connection.
Actually one thing didn't look right to me... MSRP $29.95 for a product from Monster Cable. I fully expected the $3.50 device would be marked up to $59.95.
Posted by: ebonovic
From my need:
I need something that goes from a HDMI-Male to an DVI-Female,
The Monster adapter looks like it is a HDMI-Female to a DVI-Male (basically the adapter would hook up to the display and then I can run a standard HDMI Male-Male cable)
But I already have a 12ft DVI Male-Male...
Such dilema's to play with a $1000 toy :)
Posted by: leesweet
I think the *other* one on the Monster page goes the *other* way, the way you want (not that I'd buy a Monster adapter in any case...). I'd rather get the cable. I find adapters too inflexible; something hits them, and you've broken something hard to fix! (Especially with a little plug like what HDMI looks like!)

Good, good. $2000 is much more in range.
If you look at the full page pic of the back of the NR1000 in the Audioholics review, you will see that it has HDMI inputs and output. It does look like the HDMI module slips in and out, not sure if it is included in the base unit.
Look at all those coax and fibre optic in/out's! That should just about cover it. :)
Onkyo - what is their rep. with new products? Are they usually pretty bug free, or are they more like Denon (I love Denon, btw, but they do tend to rush products that aren't ready)?

I've been lurking for a while and decided to finally register. You guys have been so helpful. My order info from Value Elecronics is below. When I called last week, the young lady informed me that mine would be shipped mid-April (though, that might have been a standard answer). At this point, I think you're off by at least a factor of two. Though I think you'll still be getting yours around the end of April or very early May.

Yeah I agree but did not wish to guess. You said order number 12,868 was already over the 350 mark. Well my order number is 13,985 so an extra 1,117 orders. Now are all those extra orders HD-Tivos or just other internet orders, who knows. If it is HD-Tivos they could have 1,400 plus pre-orders.
Me I just happy to get mine in April or May and save $100. I'll put that money towards a DVI cable.

Well this is the reply I got from MonsterCable:

The product VA HDMI-DVI SL is a male HDMI to female DVI. So, it basically connects HDMI-capable components to a DVI cable. We also manufacture the VA DVI-HDMI SL which is a female HDMI to male DVI; connects DVI-capable components to a HDMI cable.

"about" 250 is what is expected to ship the second week. Beyond that, no numbers have been mentioned or implied. But we can guess. It won't have any basis in fact, though. ;) Supposedly about 800 of these things are being manufactured each week.

Thanks! And no, I can only read back a couple pages... By the time my e-mail notification comes through, if I don't catch it, I'm like 100 posts behind.
So are those 200 all going to VE, or to all retailers? I.e., how far down on the list does Robert think he'll get?
Posted by: dswallow
I think Robert's getting the entire first week of production.
I think what's happening is the production has started and at the appropriate point, the units built are being shipped such that they can be in his hands on 3/31 to make the "first quarter" shipping claim by DirecTV. Then the remainder of the units from the week are going to him as well. Then beginning with the second full week of production the allocation is split so as to get units to other companies who have pre-sold units without ignoring Robert's either, then the third and future weeks the shipments generally favor Robert since he's got such a huge pre-sold list to ship to, and when that's fulfilled, they'll reshuffle things to get units into stock at retail stores and at dealers.
I would believe DirecTV knows it's better to have the first units in peoples hands so that the word of mouth buzz can develop rather than sitting idly on store shelves and is allocating based on feedback from the dealers who have committed to orders to find out how many they actually have sold already.
But that's just me guessing. ;)

What makes you think your shipment from California to California won't leave the state? :p

you are probably right. When I ordered my Laptop it shipped from China and then sat on a loading dock in Alaska for 3 days. It would not surprise me at all to learn that my HD tivo went San Diego to LA via Atlanta, GA.
As my mom used to say: if you want to get to heaven you have to change planes in Atlanta.

Will-San, dude, you're embarassing yourself, try some reading comprehension... Perhaps you're ESL?
Are the 200 going to VE (Value Electronics), or to all retailers? I don't care who lives where, I'm asking how much we can expect VE to get to give to the pre-orders. No matter where those pre-orders live.
Got it? Or do I need to be clearer for Will-San?

The numbers quoted of 200 the first week and 250 the second week represent the total number of units going to Robert to fulfill orders placed with Value Electronics. Nothing has been said if there are any more units being produced either of those weeks going anywhere else.

I've ordered dozens of things from Southern CA shipped through UPS over the years. Never have I seen one leave the state. UPS has a constant convoy of trucks heading up and down I-5, as anyone driving on it can attest.
UPS quotes a ground ship-time of 1 day within one part of the state (North or South), and 2 day between. I can't recall a time they didn't meet that target. For example, I've come to expect overnight service from Amazon's Reno warehouse for just UPS ground rates.
So, assuming they're shipped timely on the 31st, its likely those in Southern CA will have theirs on the 1st. I hope to have mine on the 2nd.
Posted by: dstroot
Just trying to help Doug with the post count...
I'm #193 (whew, just under 200!), I live in San Diego, AND I upgraded to overnight shipping! I don't want to give UPS or Fedex the chance to send it anywhere but my house. I hope Robert gets all his first 200 and that I have one of the first units up and running in the country. Yeehaw!
There, that post felt good. :)

I haven't ever seen that, but I have seen UPS Oregon to Oregon shipping go by way of Montana. Of course with the 1000s of packages I have shipped I have only seen something like this happen once.
(For those that care it was an envelope that stuck to the back of another envelope, though the one it stuck to wasn't shipped by us.)

same exact boat over here. You should have seen the face when I hooked up the HTPC.

I wouldn't, as much CRAP as AbMagFab was spewing, back around page 30 or so plus he was too lazy to read the posts. I'm suprised anyone would help him.

Maybe this has something to do with the falling stock price........

I wish that was the only problem I had. I've convinced her that D* is GIVING these units away if you just pay the monthly $5. I'm hiding the actual cost in our business expenses. If she ever finds out, I'm toast.

Man, you guys really are living on the edge. I wouldn't want the constant fear of being found out.

That TiVo/Die story has been on AVS about three times (I've lost count) in the Replay forum where people who can't search keep reposting it. Anyway, a stock with a price in high single digits is hard to not be volatile. (Nuff said on that.)
As for remotes, yeah, each time I 'improve' my One For All remote, my wife wants to know: Are the power/channel/volume buttons still where they were?! :)
Posted by: GreyGhost00
My wife was upset when we switched to D* and only had the standard HD receiver on the big TV (we still have an SD Tivo on the 27". )
"So can we still pause programs?"
A: "NO"
"Well that sucks..."
It wasn't that hard to convince her to get the HD Tivo :D.
The HTPC was much the same:
"So you mean we'll have our entire CD collection available on this thing?"
A: "YEP"
"That's pretty cool. Just make sure I know how to use it."
Thus the Harmony remote made it's way into our house ...

The key is to buy so much stuff that she can't keep track. : ) Oh, and never, ever, complain about stuff she buys . . . .

I told my wife the NET price $250. After selling the Samsung t-160, Hipix card, and One Upgraded DirecTivo. She bought it hook line and sinker :D I'm lucky she dosn't spend money like I do. ;)
One note about the article on the death of Tivo. It's been discused to death (pun intended) how Tivo must partner with a cable company in order to survive. When the average Joe/Jane looks at $10 per month vs. $1000 its not hard for them to choose. We all know that Tivo offers a superior package but most don't care.
Tivo may always remain a niche product. But I believe it will always remain. Everybody isn't going to buy a 60" plasma either but they will continue to produce them. Why would Tivo be any different.
Posted by: madpoet
Yep, once I sell my 2 replays and various other assorted gear, I won't be spending THAT much on the system ;)
Posted by: JEbbesen
My wife just shakes her head at my eletronic puchases. My only salvation is that I usually end up making $$ when I resell these items. In this case, she doesn't know how much I am spending, only that I am selling some old stuff to pay for it (in reality pay for part of it)

EIDE or Serial ATA? Does anyone have a good answer to that question yet? I know when it comes time to upgrade, I don't have a computer with serial ATA connections and creating a bigger drive using (future to be named) utilities would be impossible.

I can only wish it would be SATA, but it's EIDE.
Posted by: madpoet
Doug, any particular reason you would prefer SATA? FOr the data transfer rate we're talking here, EIDE is more than powerful enough.

It's just so nice using that itty bitty thin cable, that's all. No coercing wide ribbon cables through crevices and around obstacles. And it looks so pretty in a case. ;)
Yeah, I know, real scientific, huh? :)
But EIDE drives are more prevalent; and are cheaper; so SATA isn't much of a consideration in such things yet. And as you pointed out, there's really no performance advantag possible yet with current drives anyway, so it was in no way necessary to use SATA for any technical reason.

Ok, I finally took Doug's post and put it in a spreadsheet to try and figure out where I may stand. If the average order to "reported" hit rate for the first 300 holds true for the remainder of the list, then I should be around #590 or so. So IF the third shipment is 200 units, I should be in that one. Of course, the "earlier orderers" may be more inclined to be on Doug's than those who waited a while, so there may be more "invisible" orders the further down the list you go. So I'm guessing delivery somewhere around 3rd to 4th week of April. Pretty much what I was expecting anyway.

And that will certainly be an issue IF there's not room inside the case for a second drive. But the reports I've seen are that it's EIDE.
Posted by: madpoet
Ok, the cabling reason makes sense :). Couldn't you use a SATA-IDE convertor to at least get some of the cable out of the way?

I don't think my methodology applies to orders as late as yours as I expect the ratio of other sorts of online orders to HD online orders would have changed by then, but using that methodology put you at #979. Though I don't think it changed that drastically by the time you had placed your order, so I'd be guessing more around the early to mid 800's.
I mention this not to frustrate you, but just for the opportunity to suggest you could come up to NJ and play with my unit while you're waiting.

Every TiVo unit design I've seen the innards of so far would make that very difficult; space at the end of the drive where the cable connects is at a premium, and the drive is mounted over the motherboard where the cable connects to it, so it's a premium there too. I don't think a converter could fit in either location. But I also don't think the converters can be used in pairs. ;)

I had a typo... I meant 590. And I wasn't going by order numbers at all... that gets even harder to figure out because of orders for other types of products screwing up the order numbers. I looked at how many order reports there were, vs. the actual reported place in line. So for the first 300, there's about a 55% rate of those orders actually getting reported to your list. But you are right, that rate probably decreases as time goes on. But 590 still gives me a LITTLE space if the third shipment is 200. I think I should EASILY make fourth shipment.
And I'm not even going to touch that metaphoric innuendo. :D

But look at the order numbers on the first 300. Based on order numbers there's actually fewer orders than the position-in-line numbers indicate. For a while, at least, phone orders for the HD unit or online orders for multiple HD units offset any non-HD online orders.

Anyone know when the Beta NDA expires ? With the units shipping so soon I would have thought that a few more details would be trickling out. Personally I'm expecting very few differences from the current units.....but hoping for some nice surprises.
Doug - my order number is #13071 on 1/25, but I forget the time.
Posted by: Darin
Personally, I think going by order numbers is going to be really hard... I'd imagine that when the pre-order first became available, a HUGE percentage of their orders were for the HD-TiVo. And there's going to be some kind of funky curve as people learned of the ability to pre-order. Then a gradual taper down to more "normal" business. I just think it'd be a little more accurate to assume a certain percentage of those orders are getting reported. I would expect that to also follow some kind of curve... a lower percentage of people who just ordered may know about this thread compared to those who ordered in the very beginning, but I don't think that curve will be as drastic and eratic as trying to use a percentage of VE orders that are HD-TiVos.
EDIT: and BTW, I previously ignored the single place in line of 328 further down... if I use that to calculate the average, that puts me at #611. Still within the third shipment if it's 200. :D I do still think though that the slope of reports is going to cause me to be a little later, but I still don't think it'll cause me to be later than 4th shipment IF they are shipments of 200. FWIW, I also ignored those few people that ordered two units, as I wasn't sure how Robert reported their place in line. Wasn't enough of those to really affect it anyway, so I just ignored it.

Robert:
Can you tell us the order number or approx time and date of #450? This information would help all of us in the 300-600 range to have a better idea where we stand and when we might expect shipment.
