I can't see it, really. How do I make it so everybody can read it.

I hope I didn't say anything bad!

Just checking.

No kidding... I'd say the majority of people have done something under the influence of alcohol that they later regretted. It doesn't indicate a drinking problem.

Not trying to kick, but he publicly blamed his behavior on "having a few". That shouldn't be an excuse. Just my opinion.

I'm dropping this issue, and now just waiting on my order. :)

I explored some in the server logs and did a few tests and it appears that when downloading a PDF file from the server there are 2 entries generated; the first seems to be an initial transfer where the downloading system then sees it's a PDF file and launches Adobe Acrobat Reader, then the second where the entire contents actually get transferred.

There might be some people explicitly downloading the file, too, but I'd guess they're pretty minimal. So all those previously posted PDF download numbers should be divided in half.

Which leaves as of now:

4,291 total downloads of the HR10-250 user guide

3,873 of them are PDF downloads
418 of them are ZIP downloads

And things seem to have settled down somewhat... only 204 total downloads so far today.

OK joe, you don't need to keep apologizing. WE FORGIVE YOU>

Posted by: joegolf68

PDF files....

I have had little luck using PDF files. I use a laptop and when I download a PDF the screen image is poor. Are you all downloading the entire guide and then printing? Do you have to go through a ream of paper. I assume this file is somewhere near 100 pages...?

I have looked extensively on how to take a PDF and convert to MS Word. Do any of you know of any freeware that allows you to do this? Thanks.

Doug...you being gay activist and the founder of Gay Days at Disney(I'm assuming you are the Doug Swallow that I have read and heard about) I find it quite amusing that based you preference on eating at a place because the owner has religious and family beliefs that makes her want to close her stores on Sunday. Tolerance is a two way street.

My lifetime low is 68, about three years ago. Since then I have had two back surgeries. I play little golf now, can break 80 about half the time. My handicap usually hung around 4 to 7. I am now an 8.8, this month. Shot a 77 in Oregon last week. I have to play with those Therma Care heat packs which I would recommend for anyone with a really bad back. For the most part, I keep off the pain pills and only use them for extreme pain bouts. Anyone ever being told to have back surgery should get three opinions and do EVERYTHING reasonable before having a surgery. In a few weeks I am headed to Santa Monica for more opinions if they can do anything for me.

With modern golf technology, I can still hit the ball about as far as I could when I was younger (now 51). I just bought a new driver a friend made for me, these things are getting hotter and hotter, the ball jumps off the club head. Hit one drive yesterday on one hole that was as far, or further, than I have ever hit on that hole before. It is a cgolf lub that I belong to and have played for 25 years, which really lets me know if I am getting longer or shorter. I shot 85 yesterday (greens had just been plugged and sanded which makes putting horrible. I lost $54 on the course, rolled for the first round of drinks, where everyone ordered Crown Royal, lost that bet which cost another $40 or so (seven of us rolled), then played liars dice for a couple of hours at the bar, losing another $25. Bad day at black rock! lol Usually I do better in all the betting, but sometimes you are the windshield, sometimes the bug! ;)

Hey, you just asked if I ever shot a 68. Yep. Only sub-70 round I ever shot, although I have many, many in the low 70's in the past ten years.

Phone orders are entered into a different system than that which is used for the online store and have a different number sequence.

Use a photo editing program to crop out a square then to resample it to the specific resolution you want, then save it as a JPG or GIF. Your camera probably came with something that allows at least a limited amount of this sort of thing; if not you may have a photo editor or a paint program that came with Windows or another product. Or you can find some freeware/shareware things online that'll let you do that. I generally use Adobe Photoshop when working with images.

I would have been joegolf79 in 1976. I began playing in my freshman year of college. A buddy and I could play the military course here in town for dirt cheap, about $45 for a six month pass, excluding weekends. We beat the ball every damn weekday for months on end. That is really how to learn the game unless one is really talented, which I am not. Once I had that foundation of hundreds of rounds at an early age, it comes back pretty easily when I lay off for a month or two. Guys who start later in life, have a very difficult time getting really good unless they beat thousands of balls on the driving range. Your shooting 79 is quite impressive!!! I recall some statistic that only one out of every 500 golfers EVER break 80. I still recall the day I did that. I had several previous opportunities and blew it. On the 18th hole I needed to two putt from about thirty feet. My buddy was sure to let me know this too!!! Well, my first putt came up about three feet short. I was nervous as hell, but made the putt. Following that, I began to break 80 every five or six rounds.

We were playing with persimmon woods and forged irons. If I had to go back to playing those now, I seriously doubt I would break 90 very often. The new balls, clubs and better maintained golf courses has made it a game to enjoy way into our old age, health allowing, which mine is barely allowing right now.

It is said by most experts that the most difficult thing in sports is hitting a big league fast ball. Well, I've seen many professional baseball players trying to hit an iron over water and I think they might say that is almost as difficult.

hey, I even got to play two rounds with John Daley while he was still in college. Whole different story, but I must say I have been a lucky fellow.

:)

Can someone PLEASE tell me/us when they are expected to go online? The HDTiVO is great, but will become much more useful when we can record all the networks in HD.

Joe - what do you think of those 400cc drivers (Taylor Made 580, eg)? They look like they have been injected with steroids.

Do they really increase distance/accuracy that much?

The Bay Area is very, very hilly. I can always get ABC, most of the time Fox and some of the time CBS. I cannot get NBC. This varies depending on where you live.

CBS network is available via D*. My local Fox is not an O&O station, so they won't be available via D* for a long time.

So, until D* starts beaming the local HD signals (or picks up more network feeds), I am the mercy of Comcast, which shows no sign of deploying the Moto 6208 (with it's absurdly small hard drive).

Yeah, that makes sense. Being here in Dallas, I just don't think about terrain being a factor in reception at all. As for your question about when D* might do this, I don't think there are any hard plans right now, much less an estimated date. If it was posted anywhere, I missed it, and I normally monitor here, avsforum, and dbsforum.

I prefer electronic documentation and PDF works as well as any for me, I too have a laptop, but it has a decent display. I don't print the guide, that's just a waste, I'm going to get a paper copy I'll never look at in the near furture anyway. I did print one page, that back panel picture so I could refer to it while reading the descriptions, some diagrams arn't too clear unless magnified a bit.

I only downlaoded it once, at work then sent it home to my server so I could accesses it from home without hitting Doug's server again. I still wonder how Doug affords all that bandwidth.

Posted by: jcondon

I downloaded the PDF at work to my work computer.

Had problems printing it. The job spooled but, never printed. No errors or anything.

So I downloaded it a second time on my laptop and hooked my laptop up to the HP laser printer and printed that way with no issues.

I would have copied the file to my laptop from the desktop but, it was a hassle at the time. (two separate networks one wired the other wireless).

I hate reading long documents on a monitor. Short documents are fine but, almost 200 pages (most of which I just browsed through) is not something I like to do.

I do like the ability to search the manual electronically so I keep all electronic manuals I download just for that. The pictures of the jack and connections comes in very handy when rewiring the home entertainment center. I can leave all the pdf open and on that page as I work. I can feel around the back of the units and hook up the wires by using the images on the screen as a reference. My entertainment center certainly looks nice but, isn't open enough in the back for wiring. And its too new for me to take a saw to it. Maybe in a year....

Is that analog or digital reception? The reception characteristics of analog vs digital is supposed to be quite different, I hope to find out for real very soon. The digital stations are on different frequencies. Though I'd expect you to still have trouble with NBC, its an under powered transmitter on the other side of me, even further from you. That's what happens when the network has a fight with the established station and jumps to a small local not ready for being in a national network.

For me I can't get a usable signal for FOX, but its channel 2 right at the bottom of VHF. Their digital station is channel 56, I get plenty of analog stations around the 50s.

I agree with you re: the KRON/NBC dispute. Everybody suffers. And now KRON is acting like the spoiled brat and keeping KNTV from relocating its transmitter to San Bruno.

Reception - with digital, it is all or nothing. Typically, it "seems" like I can get digital better. I suspect its due to the UHF signal being a bit better with hills. As it is now, I have no line of sight to Sutro tower, so everything I get is hill bounce.

The signal is stronger at night, and weakest as sunset. ABC and PBS are real strong (KRON too, but I refuse to watch them anymore). Fox is usually quite strong, and CBS is always iffy. I have even been able to get KNTV via its sister station (48?), which has a transmitter in Fremont. Very rare with this, and I stopped bothering with it when Comcast HD went online.

On the PDF manual: two comments: guilty on download the zip twice! Once at work when it came out, and once at home for the laptop in front of the TV where the TiVo will be.

And, I probably won't print it. Using Acroread 6, the visual image of the manual is as good or better than a printed version. I've not had problems with PDFs for years, so I'm interested in what could be going wrong in viewing it online. (Now, I am using Win XP Pro and Acroread 6, but that shouldn't really matter...)

Finally found a guide that has the information the way I think it should be presented in a Tivo world.

By Title and then the dates and times they are on. To bad it's only for one channel. I already sent a suggestion in to Directv for them to improve their guide.

I haven't been posting for a variety of reasons, although I lurk. Work has been rather intense since 2001--downsizing, restructuring, recapitalizing, achieving an emancipation of my company from non-employee shareholders, etc.

I've been spending the spare time I have with my children. By way of apology to my 5-year old for my recent work shchedule, we had "Allison Day". Anything she wanted to do with Daddy all day long. Pancakes and eggs at a local restaurant for breakfast; a trip to the Museum of Natural History; a milkshake; a dinosaur movie in the basement theater; dinner at her favorite restaurant; time on the playground; and two trips on a vintage carousel. As much as I love you guys, it was an easy choice. :)

Hey Slocko:

What sort of whining did you do when you called D* to complain about the antenna on the HD deal and did you call a regular CSR or retention? I have to do the same thing as they told me I couldn't get the antenna when I signed up for the deal.

Thanks

No way will I print this manual, my printer would need CPR afterwards! I also use acrobat reader and winxp and have no probs. Just zoom in a little is all.

Well said, Doug. Some people are confusing tolerance with free choice. Just because I tolerate something doesn't mean I have to like it or patronize it (if a business).

I tolerate the practice of smoking, but do not tolerate being exposed to smoke -- I'll go out of my way to avoid heavy smoking areas (or smoke in my face at all, really), and as a consumer "lobby" for non-smoking establishments by patronizing them.

It becomes a little harder to avoid clashing tolerance and support when it's a zero-sum game (which is fairly rare) than when it's not.

I have been playing the Biggest Betha, 49 inches, for the past five years or so, maybe four, well...whenever they first came out. I love the driver but all my buddies were buying this superhot club. I just searched and found this link to the info for the club:

http://www.alphagolfclubs.com/C830_2_TI_DRIVER.aspx

460 cc head, wow, BIG! I was told this is going to be the max according to the USGA. My shaft is too whippy, so I am having him get an extra stiff instead of stiff. No doubt at all that this thing comes off hot. My mis-hits, which were almost every shot yesterday, were as long as my regualr hits, but I was pushing the shots due to the shaft flexibility. It is worth a look for anyone wanting to try a new driver. John Daly is suppose to start playing this club also. The size of the head is no problem for me, I like large faced clubs, but I am very good with hitting a driver off the fairway and have not tried this one yet. I'd hate to lose the ability to hit a driver off the fairway, as it brings par fives into reach if 270 yards or closer after my drive.... when I hit it well. I'd gues yesterday, on hole five, a 415 yard dogleg right, I hit the driver just a tad over 300 with not much roll. My Biggest Bertha is good for about 280 when I nut it!

My buddy still hears from John once in a while but I dont think Ill get to golf with him anymore!!!

Hey JAB, great to see you're still around. :)

I was beginning to think almost everyone I used to talk to from the old TiVo forum days of 1999-2000 was gone. I used to post as "mroll" back then.

Hope everything's going well for you and you'll be able to stop by more often. Welcome back.

http://www.alphagolfclubs.com/C830_2_TI_DRIVER.aspx

I'd hate to lose the ability to hit a driver off the fairway, as it brings par fives into reach if 270 years or closer after my drive.... when I hit it well. I'd gues yesterday, on hole five, a 415 yard dogleg right, I hit the driver just a tad over 300 with not much roll. My Biggest Bertha is good for about 280 when I nut it!

Good lord that is huge! And it comes in a 4 deg. loft? I didn't think that was allowed.

Briefly (as this is not really a golf forum...) - is there any disadvantage to those huge club faces, aside from not being able to hit it off a fairway? It would seem the larger the sweet spot, the better.

Getting my HD-Tivo is the only thing I have thought about since January 17. Problem is what to do after I get it, since I don't really care about anything that's actually on TV.

I guess i could apologize to my wife and have a "Gail Day."
Anything she wants to do with Hubby all day long. Pancakes and eggs at a local restaurant for breakfast; a trip to the Museum of Natural History; a milkshake; a dinosaur movie in the basement theater; dinner at her favorite restaurant; time on the "playground"; and two trips on a vintage carousel.

As much as I love you guys, it will be an easy choice. I'll be here looking to see what everybody is saying about their HD-Tivo.

This IS how TiVo's guide is arranged. You select a title then go view upcoming showings. It lists it by date, then time. When I have some free time (before this thread existed) I would start at the top of the movie list and go down alphabetically. If I saw a movie I was interested in I would investigate further. I'm not a big fan of DirecTV's guide. TiVo's is much easier to use IMHO.

Last golf post for me here, so as to respect the thread. anyone can pm me for more info.

I don't think there is any limitation to loft degree for drivers or any club. the big head looks great to me, like how can I miss? My Bertha was a 6.5 degree but this is a 9.5. I'll just have to experiment. I don't see any issues with the big head, except maybe off the fairway, which I had no guts to do yesterday with money on the line. I don't hit practice shots on the range.... but I just might have to break that to hit off the turf. Don't hit practice shots as my back is so poor I don't want to waste a single shot the rest of my golfing life.

I don't think you can deactivate a unit online except maybe thru an email to customer service.
It is nice though the D*-HR10-250 is online. Rather than being on hold for an extended period of time we can at least activate our new unit in seconds and call a CSR at 2am when the lines aren't so busy and ask them to disable a unit.

Posted by: PJO1966

I'm still planning to call to activate. This way I can point out how long I've been a loyal DirecTV member, talk about the many people I've convinced to become subscribers, and to complain again that my current TiVo keeps losing its guide data (happened again Friday). Hidden agenda? Not me.

Posted by: Kamakzie

Seeing I am a newbie to D* I think I already got the perks so I have nothing to gain by calling in.

Posted by: sotapoppy

I've never activated online before. What are the advantages? I've activated 3 receivers in the past 4 months and each time it took no more than what seemed like 4 or 5 minutes. Two of those times I deactivated receivers on the same call.

I had to speak to retention. I just told them that it had only been a few weeks since I took advantage of the promotion and that I had just spent big mula on a HD Tivo, could they give me a $50 dollar credit to match the current promotion since I had already bought an OTA antenna.

I like activating online just because I don't have to talk to someone. I don't need to waste their time doing something I can do alone. I won't know how long I have to spend waiting to do it until I'm waiting to do it on a call. But online, I just go to a web page, enter a couple pieces of info, clikc OK, and am done. Now sometimes you get a chatty CSR who's rather fun to talk with; sometimes I'm in a mood to deal with that sort of thing and actually enjoy it.

No real advantages or disadvantages. Just another way to do the same thing... well one disadvantage if you're replacing a receiver -- you can't deactivate a receiver online, so you do have to call for that one.

You can do both online ... in fact you can ADD just about everything online. You just can't subtract programming or features.

For those of us who are new to DirecTV, what deals should we be able to get other than free installation? The only thing I know of is $10 off Total Choice for 6 months. I'm getting both an HDTiVo and a regular DTiVo...

Posted by: slocko

I just wasn't sure if you could filter by HD Content on the Tivo and also I am looking for something that gives me a month in advance .

I wonder how easy it is to get feeds of the programming? Is it free? Anyone have any expertise in this area? I might be willing to create an online guide that works more like the Tivo.

It's going to be left the same as whatever you had last told him to do. It's actually somewhere in this thread he said that. What happened was a significant number of orders changed to UPS Ground from Next Day Air when the units were going to be shipped from California. So when that changed again, he sent that email assuming people would end up wanting to change back, but a number of people suggested to him that really was a bad idea because of the cost differences and it's better to just have them say if they wanted to change shipping than to assume anything.

Ditto to what Doug said about activating online... much rather type in numbers than read them to someone... :) Now, on the TiVo part (my first one, of course..), people say you can do that online. Well, that's not separate that I see. Do you mean because it *is* a TiVo that it will automatically add the service and the $5 if you don't have Premier, etc.?

Posted by: herdfan

I know they can be activated online, but when I activated my HDVR2, I had to call and get the Tivo service set up. But the question is since I already have the service, will it automatically be added to the new HR10-250?

And Doug, I totally agree with you. I would rather do it online and not have to talk to CSR's. I won't buy gas at a station that doesn't have pay-at-the-pump and I switched grocery stores to one that lets me check myself out.

Posted by: donsullivan

I've done a couple of online activations of DTiVo boxes over the years with no problems. I've also made changes to programming services on line as well; also with no problems. The one thing I can say is that the first TiVo device on an account, while it went through the motions online, did not activate properly and I ended up having to call in to get it straightened out. Additional ones added to the accounts worked just fine with no problems at all. The service change was in effect on my receivers within 30 seconds of clicking the submit button on the screen. Kind of cool actually.

However, I activated an HTHLD recently (got the CC $249 deal) but it didn't go so well. Everything online worked the way I expected it too including activation of the receiver and addition of the HD programming package on my account. I even got the 'updating satellite data' message on the receiver but no programming activation actually took place on the receiver. I looked back at the account and it showed everything to be active but it did not work.

After about an hour with no changes, I finally called customer service and lo-and behold they couldn't get it to activate either. They tried about 4 different things including completely removing the receiver from the account and then adding it again fresh. Still didn't work. At that point the CSR was pretty much stumped and put me on hold for about 5 minutes researching what to do.

In the end they had to remove my subscription to NFL Sunday Ticket from the account since apparently it was flagged as Expired and for some odd reason was locking the account from service changes. Once they did that the receiver activated and everything worked as expected.

However, they didn't add the NFL package back onto the account so I had to log in and re-add that subscription to my account again myself. So far now, everything seems to be working as desired.

Sorry, I've been out all day with the family so even I have not keep up with all of the new posts of the past 20 or so hours.

SPACEWAY's satellites are scheduled to launch in late November '04. Not all of it's capacity will go to delivering DIRECTV subscribers HD locals.

The SPACEWAY broadband Internet project is alive and well. SPACEWAY's satellites will do all of the switching on-board in deep space, eliminating the ground based Network Operation Center. Hence, greatly reducing the latency and increasing the up and download speeds.

PC's will communicate directly to servers and other PC's with the switching done on the SPACEWAY satellites.

The first customers will be governments and large corporations. residential service is slated to have SPACEWAY available in 2006.

Let me get this straight...

They disapprove of what you do in the bedroom, but they're still willing to serve you a chicken sandwich.

You disapprove of the deity they worship in church, so you refuse to patronize their business.

Now you tell me, who's acting intolerant? What have they ever done to you?

This smacks of the the "thoughtcrime" hypocrisy that is so pervasive on the Left. Why don't you learn to judge people on the basis of their actions instead of their beliefs?

No, actually. The corporate entity refuses to allow the store to serve me a chicken sandwich on Sunday even if the store would like to do so. That's my beef. The corporate entity justifies this based on religious reasons. I normally do not associate chicken sandwiches with religion.

It's really more a gimmick than anything else, to differentiate themselves to a subset of people in a crowded market. And somewhat surprising is how many people weren't aware why the company forces their stores to stay closed on Sunday, only that they did.

A good analogy would be DirecTV forcing their dealers to not sell or install DirecTV receivers on Sunday.

I'm not trying to make them start selling chicken sandwiches on Sunday. I'm simply refusing to spend my money at their business because they refuse to let their stores open on Sunday. It's my money. It's my business what I do with it. It's their business and their contracts. And it's their decision how to run it. I have no problem with all that; and have no problem not patronizing them. I'm not even trying to get others to stop going there. I couldn't care less about that company. They're rarely on my radar screen for any reason. And there is competition, after all.

OK... now that was strange. I typed all that and noticed everywhere I was capitalizing "sunday". Why? Am I supposed to? OK, I went and looked. Sure enough, you're supposed to capitalize days of the week as well as months of the year. OK. Never mind my rambling there.

Now when I lived in Orlando, there was a chain of restaurants called Krystal. They served little mini-burgers like White Castle, but put mustard on them. That was about the only difference between them (well, the method of making/cooking the beef "sheets" was a tad different, but it was the mustard that was the major taste difference).

I hate mustard. I never went to Krystal after the first few visits. It was just too much an annoyance to try to get them to remember to not put mustard on them. Am I being intolerant? They don't serve what I want the way I like it, so I go somewhere else. Yes, I could get them without mustard, but it was "special" and required extra effort, and often would not be done correctly, and just wasn't worth the annoyance factor.

Few people would give me a hard time over this. But gosh darn it, put the "r" word in my reasoning about food and all of the sudden I get attacked for it. Who's intolerant?

When I was a kid, I hated onions. McDonald's was forbidden fast food. They cooked their beef patties amidst piles of little onion bits, and a "no onions" order meant a lengthy wait for a patty to be cooked just for my order. Roy Rogers became my favorite; burgers served plain, you decorate them with your choice of condiments at their Fixin's Bar. Yummier though was the fried chicken. :D

I hear there's even people who hate lima beans, brussels sprouts and okra! Sacrilege to not buy them and support their growers!

The order number for the other users falls into place properly in the list; Using that order number with yours is out of sequence by the date/time you also gave. I figured you had a typo or something and just x'd it out.

I am about to that level of annoyance with Starbucks. Just because I order a sugar free syrup, they automatically assume I want it skinny (skim milk) and give me my read back as such. It is a pain to have to constantly correct them to stop trying to change my order to conform to what they think it should be as if sugar free = fat free anyway.

You can't discount the HR10-250 anymore for us right?

How about this:

Anyone who preorders an HR10-250 from here and pays a deposit will receive White Castle burgers as a bonus! So if you put down a $25 deposit, you'll get your HR10-250 and $25 of White Castle burgers. If you put down a $100 deposit, you'll get $100 of White Castle burgers.

Not even temporarily--which is why it probably isn't allowed. They wouldn't want to fix that, because then the receiver I have hooked up to my computer wouldn't get them anywhere near $5 a month.

I must stop taking orders below the MAP prices established by DIRECTV as of 4/4/04. MAP on the HR10-250 is $999.99.

However, I believe you may have a good idea here. How about a $50.00 VE gift certificate. As I interpret DIRECTV's new HD STB MAP policy I can give a gift with purchase with a value of no more than $50.00. My gift for avs/TC members with $100.00 deposits on advance orders will be a VE $50.00 gift certificate.

I understand your position with regard to mustard and onions. I can't stand them either, and the aftertaste never goes away. :)

However, it's a pretty safe bet that you find mustard and onions offensive seven days of the week, so you vote with your feet - you just don't like the product. But if you're buying a chicken sandwich on Wednesday, why would it matter to you whether or not the restaurant had been open on Sunday?

That sort of irrational consumer behavior is what leads me to believe you are discriminating against them for their religious beliefs. And if that's the case, who's the bigot here?

Even the hard-line right wing Christians (who I typically disagree with, BTW) preach a message of forgiveness and "turning the other cheek" - despite their extreme views. Why is it that most left-wingers choose to wage campaigns of persecution, name-calling, and passive-aggressive behavior against the individuals and groups they disagree with?

White Castle used to (and maybe still does) sell them for next-day delivery via telephone order. I'm pretty sure they'd pack them frozen though, just like what you now find distributed in stores nationwide, so there's a good chance they stopped the phone order sales since there's little need for that now.

You live in a different world. ;) Extremists rarely turn the other cheek. They're extremists. I'm not waging a campaign. I just keep trying to explain myself when someone alleges my behavior has some meaning that it doesn't.

If you offered this sort of thing for same day delivery, it might not increase your sales, but it might generate some demand for same-day delivery service if they also can get White Castles with their HR10-250, so you could still profit from it and differentiate yourself even further in a crowded DirecTV reseller marketplace. ;)

It's 1:30 AM and I've been at work since early evening today and other than a day off with my family today, I have been working for the past 80 days straight, from early AM to early AM every day.

Quiting time for me has been averaging 1:00 AM - 2:00 AM, tonight I'll be staying later, or is it earlier?

I guess a little humor feels good.

Humor??! You got me jonesing for white castle's now! Greasy yummy white castle's. Steaming hot white castle's. Tiny gooey white castles.

Ok...I think I need a vacation.

Sorry, I can't take you with me.

I shouldn't be telling you this, but there are several members that are planning on stopping by on Monday and shackling you to your desk. They apparently don't approve of the 5-6 hours each day you are spending away from the office. They said something about undoing the chains later in the week.

Shhh....don't say I squealed.

What about combination purchases? Like, the 688 for $100 with $100 deposit on the STB, or you could do the 688 for $150 with a $50 GC. Strange, even if it's a MAP, can't you just have people "call" for a better price?

Having been a frequent buyer of Garmin products that have similar MAP stipulations I've seen some interesting ways to circumvent this. One site has you click on an "email us for the price" button, when you do it puts together an email and in the body of the email it tells you what the price is and you need not even bother sending in the email.

I had my first White Castle burgers a couple of years ago while driving back from Florida. These are the tiny little burgers right? That was the last time I'll eat there though. Terrible food!

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Posted by: slocko

Are the whitecastle burgers being shipped from Califronia or New York?

Can I pick them up and instead? I am going to write amended on my order right now and fax it in!!! :D

I heard KC already ate his white castle burgers that came with his Tivo.

White Castles are an acquired taste and obviously not for everybody. FWIW, they are particularly popular for folks that get the late nite "munchies", if you know what I mean. :D

Most likely KC's White Castles did not come thru the usual channels.
Rumor has it they may be referred to as "beta burgers".

Give it a freaking rest, will you?

So what, maybe he did get a beta unit, a prototype, or a box used for internal testing. Why do you care? He said he paid full price so it's not like he broke into DirecTV headquarters and grabbed it of some technician's workbench. Even if he did, don't worry - it's not coming out of VE's allocation so your precious order won't be delayed.

I'd reiterating my request that you people start acting like adults. Just because you're a bunch of tivo fanboys doesn't mean that you are better connected than anyone else. In fact, your obsessive attitudes and egotistical behaviors are probably what got you excluded from the beta program in the first place. Quit attacking the poor guy already. It's not the end of the world that he got his HD box before you got yours.

Buh-bye.

A real question that I would like answered once people start receiving their units:

Are the IR codes for the HD-Tivo the same as the HDVR2 since the remotes are exactly the same? It would same A LOT of time in remote reprogramming.

Posted by: ebonovic

To add the crazyness of the thread.

White Castles..... When you have the opportunity to get them every day, they lose "some" of their appeal. Don't get me wrong, I need to have my fix at least once a month (usually after a good round of golf)...

But even the biggest and iron clad of bellies would get whiped out by a sack of 10 every other day...

(I have 6 WC's within a 10 mile radius of my house, one next to my daily commute trainstation).

Posted by: dswallow

When my kitchen was out of commission during a remodel I spent about 2 months picking food up from various places. By far, the majority of it came from a local Italian restaurant (usually a cheese steak w/hot peppers) and White Castle.

As much as I liked that, I was soooo happy to be able to cook again my eating out over the last year since the remodel has dropped drastically. In fact, it has probably been at least a month since I did anything but cook at home (unless I was on a trip out of town) until this thread made me stop at White Castle on Friday. ;)

Now that's partly because when I was in the mood to stop somewhere I usually couldn't without risking missing some program on TV in HD. So, who knows what'll happen this week!

I love white castle, but for some reason it acts like a laxative on my digestion system. I only eat it once or twice per year.

I feel left out b/c here in Texas we don't have White Castle (we do have the greatness of Whataburger)...perhaps Rober can give Texas people Whataburgers and our friends on the west coast can get set up with some In-N-Out Burger.

QUICK TOPIC CHANGE...

He runs www.dbsforums.com.

Site is down now. But he is referring to overall production, just not VE's allocation.

Probably the bulk is going to the big boys where they have to distribute from a central warehouse to individual stores.

I got my HD-TiVo. I was trying to activate it, and it was very frustrating. The cool part was that it came from the factory case-modded to have blue undercarriage lighting.

I thought it was _sweet_ ;-)

I may be out of town for a week when UPS delivers the HDTIVO to my house. Does anyone know what UPS does with the shipment in this case? Do they send it back to sender or can I have them stored in their facility until I get back.

Posted by: slocko

If you trust your neighbor, leave a note saying to leave it with the neighbor.

But to be safe, I would just call Robert and have him set it aside for you until you get back.

Posted by: andrewket

They will attempt delivery three times and then return it to sender. Depending on how VE ships it, you may or may not have options.

1. You can set up your address for pre-release.
2. You can leave a note with your signature on your door.
3. You can leave alternate delivery information - neighbor, etc.

Keep in mind the SHIPPER has the right to: not allow release without signature, not allow changes to delivery address, and require the named receipient to sign (no third parties.)

I've been assuming so, it really wouldn't make a lot of sense to use a totally different code set when there are 10 perfectly good ones already in the HDVR2. I've programmed 2 into my Pronto so I can use the 2 machines in parallel.

The manual indicated that the remote addresses would be different. It stated that if you have multiple HD TiVos in the same room you would need to change the remote address.

It all depends on the driver. Mine never rings the bell, whether we're home or not. He just leaves it on the doorstep.

Just like with multiple HDVR2s. Which is why I put code sets 1 and 2 in the pronto. Any TiVo responds to codeset zero, which I didn't appreciate before I started this.

A UPS driver I know explained how it works in my area (I assume it's the same everywhere). He said that it depends on the neighborhood. Some neighborhoods are designated as dropoff neighborhoods and others are not.

You are an <witheld>. No one here cares how he got it, it was

that he could never prove that he got one.

I think we all would have been jazzed if someone here would have gotten one, early, even if you were the one.

He lied. He lied about having an order with VE (at least the position of the order). Who know's if he actually has an order much further down the list?

Someone here made a joke, and you got your panties all up in a wad. You need to

RELAX

It also depends if the package is shipped with Signature Required designation or not. If Signature Required is selected, then they won't (or are not supposed to) leave the package on doorstep.

Posted by: slocko

I guess I live in a good neighborhood :) Mine also just drops it off.

My heart always jumps when I come home and see a box with equipment that cost over a thousand dollars sitting on the porch.

What a sad and lonely person you are. I feel sorry for you.

Wendy from VE called me this morning to verify my shipping. I live in CA and had not upgraded to overnight, and she wanted to make sure I got it when I really wanted it, given the confusion with the California shipping thing.

She also said my box could ship as late as Wednesday.

I honestly have been holding out judgment on VE. I ordered from them because of good things I had heard on this board. My initial order experience was a little shaky (long boring story which I won't go into right now, and very possibly not their fault). And as some one pointed out earlier their web site is a little amateur looking. But from a customer service standpoint they have been pretty good.

I guess we will all know for sure when the smoke clears, but as of 9:15am PST I am not sorry I ordered from them.

Not sure if this applies to VE but if their site is less stellar than some, it could be they aren't spending a whole lot on their web page and passing the savings on to their customers...

Posted by: rleffler

Interesting.......

VE shared with Will-San #113 that his order may not ship until Wednesday.

I'm #101 with ground shipping. I was hoping for a Tuesday ship date for a potential Friday delivery.

Time will tell. I'm sure that Robert will give us an update as soon as he can.

Edit: Per UPS, I'm only a two day ship from VE. It looks like it should arrive by Friday without any problems.

This is a list of pre-orders through Value Electronics for the HR10-250 Hughes DirecTV HD DVR. * designates additional purchases by one individual that are destined for other people -- s/he's not hoarding :)

In some cases two people share an order position; this is likely just an accident during assigning them that was discovered after people were informed of their position and an order position number then was later skipped over to account for it.

Summary of delivery/shipping info, last revised 3/30/2004 10:58 PM ET:
quote:
On 3/30/2004 we were informed that DirecTV made a midnight-hour change thus delaying production by another week. They further announced they will penalize dealers selling the unit below $999.99, so effective Sunday 4/4/2004 no more orders can be taken below $999.99 (those placed prior to this under the AVSForum/TiVo Community discounts Value Electronics offered are NOT affected and will receive the discount). Shipment of the first 200 units should occur next week.

On 4/1/2004 Robert told us the first 200 units will ship to buyers on 4/6/2004 and that those buyers' credit cards would now be charged for the balance remaining.

On 4/3/2004 Robert clarified a few things (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...102#post1851102):
quote:
No one is sorrier than I regarding the inaccuracy of the actual amount of orders my company booked compared to the quantity I posted.

The good news is that I will be geitting 450 HR10-250's in my first two allocations to help accommodate the avs/TC customers who placed orders thinking they were within the first 350.

We are also receiving 400 HR10-250's weekly or bi-weekly from the end of April through May '04.

Regarding my most recent email suggesting we adjust the orders to overnight delivery was based on the the change in the FOB destination being the east coast and almost all west coast customers changed from overnight to ground when we first thought the FOB point was CA and who now want to go back to overnight delivery.

I quickly agreed to leave things as they are because of member requests. I am truly only trying to provide excellent service and the enormous volume of orders which have been changing delivery address, credit card numbers, expiration dates, selling positions, switching positions, upgrading and downgrading shipping methods, changing FOB distribution locations, changing scheduled delivery date and quantities is extremely challenging. I personally receive hundreds of emails and calls daily. Additionally, my company processes hundreds of calls, email and faxes daily.

We are dedicated to provide the highest level of customer service and technical quality advice as we set our standards very high I and my staff are taking all of this enormous volume of work in stride and keeping up with all of the changing details and facts exceptionally well.

Please do not hesitate to contact us any way you prefer, fax, email or phone. Don't stop providing information to help us deliver every order exactly as you want us to.

I hope this information helps everyone understand a little better what's going on behind the scenes and appreciate our dedication to all of you. If we make a mistake, which we will not do often we will make it right in the end for everyone.

You will get an email from Robert containing two forms to fill out regarding your order. One is a standard DirecTV commitment; the other is from Robert and contains the terms you've already seen when you placed your order online (regarding returns/cancelations) and also is helping him confirm your shipping desire and address and credit card to bill the balance to, in case you want it billed somewhere other than where the deposit was charged.

Those forms have to be returned to him before your unit ships, but otherwise has no effect on your order or position in the queue.

I think we all would have been jazzed if someone here would have gotten one, early, even if you were the one.

He lied.

You can't just assume that. Asking him to publicly post serial numbers, DirecTV account numbers, and other personally identifying information is ludicrous.

If you don't believe his story, fine, ignore it - but don't harass him for sharing with us. At least he's got the courage to admit that he's got a unit already, which is more than you can say for the rest of the beta testers.

This forum has a reputation for being hostile to "outsiders," and from what I can tell it is well deserved. Lighten up.

Well, that's ridiculous. If you go over to Happy Hour, you could find that a bunch of TC members recently got together and bought a new member her own TiVo! And not only a new one, but one with lifetime service and more capacity. That's not exactly hostile behavior. Obviously don't expect that to happen to each new member though... ;)

If you would just join in on the fun and not yell at other people, you'll be accepted much more quickly.

Well, the integrity of the forum is what keep's this place what it is.

Being "hard" on new users... Sure...
Since there is no hard core validation on obtaining a login to the forum, anyone can join, any number of times.

So when someone who just joins and makes significant claims that don't make sense. And the self-policing forum asks for validation... Then that claim is open to debate.

Re the KC case:
1) Who really cares.. If you believe him or not, doesn't change the fact if YOU have one yet.
2) IMHO, if you have enough money for an HDTV, and then a $1k HD-DTivo, I find it very hard to believe you don't have a digital imaging device of some type (webcam, digital still, digital video). So that is where my opinion was made regarding the validity of his claim.

Then with other sources, which have proven themselves to community here, doubting his claim as well from the retail end, and the DTV end... Then... ya know...

Bottom line is... Your reputation here on the boards is what you make of it. It is a self monitoring board. The members here watch out for other members, and try to keep the facts from the fiction seperated as much as possible.

And if any newbies are reading this: We like newbies, we where all there once before... Don't be afraid to ask questions, but if you are going to post something be sure you have the facts to back it up... Or it will be time for you to start all over again as a newbie... :)

..... Now let's get back to the important stuff..
When are the HD-DTivo's arriving...
and
What White Castles do the average human digestive track...

Are there significant differences between White Castles (aka rectum rockets) and Krystals? They look similar but looks can be deceiving.

KC lied about activation.. I can confirm this (or more importantly, a friend of mine confirmed it). There are no retail boxes activated yet, and that was as of this morning after a quick email...

Edit - I don't mean to sound like an insider, I'm not.. I just have a friend who works there as a CSR. He can't do anything for me and everytime I ask him for deals he jokingly tells me to call customer retention, but he was able to confirm this.

Edit2 - meant activation, not place in line.. sorry..

Along the lines what ebonovic said, credibility is important in a forum such as this one. Robert stated he did not pre-order in spite of his claims. So you have deception there. Also, a new user joined a few days ago asking if anyone had one yet. The new user gave same location as this other user (the user in question did not specify location, but mentioned it in a thread back in Jan-Feb). Also defies logic as to why DirectTV would send a unit to a small town in Virginia. The beta program from what I hear includes only a few units within R&D dept.

It's not worth getting upset about - both old and new user in question might be a high school student trying to have fun. But it is important to try and keep forum credible by exposing lapses.

Yeah, well, all this talk about White Castle.... And not liking Mustard?

Sorry, but down here in Texas, we don't get White Castle, and most of our burgers 'default' to Mustard... At least for TX burger joints... :)

And has anybody gotten any word on non VA pre-orders? I'm still waiting for word that Ultimate Electronics has them in its main warehouse...

Posted by: Dan203

This thread is done. If you guys actually want to talk about pre-orders then start a new thread. If you want to talk about fast food, sexual preference, etc.. then go to the Happy Hour.
