Let's just wait and see how many of the so-called "AVS/TC" preorders actually came from users here, and how many of them the "well connected" crowd will be hawking for $1500 on the street while the stores are sold out.

Well actually the experienced computer users know that the world does run Windows, and plan their setups accordingly.

Wait a second, if there are any preorders that end up in the "well connected" crowds' hands--doesn't it stand to reason that they will end up on Ebay? And if they are on Ebay, they will be on there at 1/4th of his price using your logic. So I say, let the "well connected" have them ;)

Anyway, some people here have no concept of a preorder. I did a pre-release preorder from another AVS Forum sponsor, paid for it over 4 months before I got it, and everything turned out fine.

I find it interesting that some are complaining about a refund on a deposit, but has anybody actually contacted VE privately to discuss the situation?

Take it private people.

Well, it didn't take long for somebody to send me an email from valueelectronics@oat.net that appeared to be an email from Robert. Of course, it had an attachment and of course, it wasn't from Robert at all.

Good thing virus detectors, etc are around to stop morons like this.

Anyone else get a message like this?

It just goes to show how true the ole addage of 'you can't please everyone'still holds true.

Case in point;

In the '70s I had a furniture mfg facility in Tennessee. My company mfgd oak roll top desk reproductions.
One day we received a letter from an obviously unhappy customer who complained that the tambour (the part that rolls up and down) moved too easily. The fact that there was no struggle in moving it made the product seem unauthentic.

That's a real shame (assuming it really was a purposeful act, which would be my guess given the subject line you reported). I guess some people have to act like 10 year olds, regardless of which side of the fence they are on.

Posted by: Darin

Is that valueelectronics email address a valid one that is listed somewhere, like in this thread? If so, it could simply be in the internet cache of an infected computer, and spoofed by the virus when it's doing it's thing. But if it's not, then someone had to specifically make that up, which is really odd (and sad).

WTF? I own the OAT.NET domain, and by some freak chance I happened to stumble across this posting! I do customize the email address to the company I am doing business with (anything addressed to oat.net ends up in my mailbox) so that I can tell who sells my info, so when I did MY Preorder I used valueelectronics@oat.net on the order form.

That order form was the first and ONLY time that email address was used, it exists nowhere else, I haven't even sent an email from my PC using it. Is it possible that valueeletronics has a virus that is sending out emails using the addresses of its customers?

Anything is possible...you could be infected, or a machine at VE could be..

Posted by: Darin

Heh, well either you, Robert, or one of the computers Robert was using to do his emailing with is infected. There have been a TON of new viruses lately. My virus software has auto-updated about five times in the past several days. Two updates already just today.

Can't be me - that address has never been used on my computer, only in their online form. The only place it exists is on their system...

I also just rescanned my machine - no viruses, I run live update daily, and my machines are behind a dumb hardware firewall, a smart hardware firewall, and a microsoft ISA server...

It is exceptionally freaky because I only logged in to confirm that I was using the correct screen name on Roberts form, saw the new HD-DRV forum thought I'd check it out, and I saw a thread about the pre-order, and went to the last page... The very first post I have read on this forum in months and whammo I see my domain being spoofed!

Weird.

Posted by: harambur

if someone has a virus on their pc, it will send email to anyone that was cc'ed on the original email.

so if your email address was cc'ed on the email robert sent out, then a virus can grab it and send itself spoofing the address.

Many viruses do explore cache files as well, harvesting email addresses.

Then it's possible that it is in your internet cache, and could be used if you are infected. But generally secure forms aren't cached, so I wouldn't think it would be, but hard to tell. I do the exact same thing you do, and I manage it with an online email forwarder... so if you added that address to your domain online, that's another source where it could leak into your cache. But it sounds like Robert may have been doing some work at home over the weekend with all the email addresses... he may have those on more than one computer, one of which could be infected. Probably on his side, but don't rule out the possibility of you just because it's not in your address book.

That's just it - I don't actually create the address in my domain. I have a default forwarder that sends any email addressed to oat.net to my mailbox. When I filled that address in on Robert's form, that was the only time that combination of characters was assembled.

I just spoke with Wendy at VE, I don't know that she fully understood what I was saying, but I tried to warn her.

You are correct, the secure form is not cached. I really don't think its me, I rechecked my system at the last post and I have a pretty solid environment... I would obviously never say I am unhackable, but I am a cisco certified professional and I make a living doing security, and my home network is as tight as I know how to make it.

Valid question.

Yep, I use Symantec and each of my workstations and servers automatically runs Live Update daily so that the signature file is no more than 24 hours old. I also have Windows update running daily.

Before posting I checked my machines and as of the noon scan today no viruses were found on any of them nor had there been any in the past year; I did an immediate live update (no new sig file) and a scan of my main workstation and it was reported clean.

That was all before I realized that email address should exist nowhere on my network to start with...

Just wanted to chime in with my thanks to Robert. My order # is 1321X, so I'll be later in the line-up. Robert, you rock, keep it up, and don't let a few jerks get you down.

That being said, there is something that causes me to wonder when any of us will be getting our units. It was said that Hughes was going to make 200 units the first week; surely those aren't all destined for your front door. Do you have any promises from D* on how many units will be shipped to you each week for shipping to your customers? I'm sure I'll get mine from you before I could get it from any other retailer, so don't think I'm being one of those jerks. Just something that concerns me as a general enthusiast, not as a customer.

I intend to do business with VE again, period. His support of the community and his [potential|actual] customers is a good sign of his credibility as a business owner. Thanks again, Robert.

Posted by: dswallow

I'm wondering if DirecTV or Hughes hasn't really badly underestimated interest in and demand for this unit. Sure, there's not tens of thousands of people lining up yet, but how many people exist out there who buy this stuff and aren't participating online... there's got to be a whole lot more than are here, in general.

Posted by: MitsHD

Doug, I was actually thinking about that today. My thought was that we on this forum maybe represent 500-600 customers at most -- we just make a lot of noise (judging from this weekend's traffic). Beyond us, this thing may be a bit specialized -- first you have to get to the subset of people who have HD, and then to those who have D*, and then to those who want TIVO. So maybe 200 units per week as a steady state contract to the Mexican manufacturer isn't so crazy -- that's 10,000 units year 1. This forum is most likely an "amplifier" of the real demand.

JD,

It's really not surprising. Anyone on Robert's email list could be infected. The virus will simply grab the email address from outlook or internet cache, and send itself using your email address.

I see this all the time. I get an automated message saying I sent a virus to such and such a person. I never did. Simply that someone that has my email address got infected and the virus sent the infected email spoofing my address.

Bryan Lyle, so far the only person who got an email from valueelectronics@oat.net, who was one of a batch of 10 emails that went out on 2/28/04 at 11:31PM EST. We are trying to reach all 10 customers by phone and have left messages on most answering machines.

We have a team of IT people tearing apart every PC, server, router and thing I never even heard of at my office and home.

One thing for sure I just promised myself is that I will never be rushed again to deliver a project of this magnitude again.

Posted by: SteveHoltam

VE is just a business. Yeah, they are selling to us fanatics, but they are not doing anything but selling a product. They are making money on each of these units. They don't owe us any favors. Good Guys has/had the exact same offer, without all the hoopla here.

I doubt there is any conspiracy on their part to give priority to anyone person over another. They will sell as many as they get, I doubt they care who's money they take first, second or last. I take their word that they will go out first come, first serve.

I would suggest that if anyone is not happy with their "treatment" (of course expecting any service on a pre-order sounds like an oxymoron) then place orders elsewhere to cover your bases. Go with who ever can get you the unit first.

Just my two cents on the last eight pages....

I can't say that I blame you, given the grief that you have had to deal with. Some people don't know a good thing when they see it. I for one am most grateful for the work you've been doing to ensure we will receive our HD TiVos in a timely fashion.

Posted by: ebonovic

Building off Robert's post above...

I was one of those batch of 10 messages.
I just talked to him on the phone, and while on the phone I opened each of the three attachments. No viruses.

Using Norton 2004, with today's live update.

Let me just say, it pretty upstanding for him to go and call us to make sure he didn't send us a virus...

And let me say... [thumping my chest] I am pretty confident and happy that I ordered VE, and that I will part of the race to post a user review of the HDTivo [/thumping my chest]

:)

Posted by: mercurial

Just got off the phone with Robert as well. Called to make sure I didn't get a virus. I must say if people want to continue to impugn his reputation, then I shall have to ask you to name a second so we can step outside and settle this like gentlemen... :)

BTW, for the record... I'm #3, I'm #3, I'm #3, I'm #3! Wooo-hoo!

(Or as my wife says, we'll get to find any remaining bugs... :) Maybe there is hope for her after all- A liberal arts major understanding the implications of being an early adopter... )

Posted by: DTV TiVo Dealer

I have contacted all 10 of the first email's we sent and no one has gotten a virus or received an email from valueelectronics@oat.***. I left voice messages on the 2 customers answering machines that I did not speak to personally.

I do not doubt Bryan Lyle's claim or problem, but it is isolated to him alone.

Hi Robert!

Glad to hear you left me a message at home. I'll check it when I get there later tonight. I wasn't implying that anyone at Value Electronics sent me a virus. I was thinking that somebody might have picked up my email address from here and sent it directly to me.

The virus that was sent was Netsky-D (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/intern...reut/index.html). If I'm the only one that this was sent to, I'm glad :)

Is there anyway you can resend me the email that was sent on 2/28? I never received it.

btw, Thanks for your hard work on this! We DO appreciate it!

Thanks!!
Bryan

I ordered at most 90 minutes after ebonovic (I ordered over the phone so never received the email confirmation so I can't say exactly when I ordered - but I did post that I was in at 12:44 east coast time that day - which is 90 minutes after ebonovic's order). It will be interesting to see how many of us ordered in that 90 minutes. I know I'm not in the first 10 (didn't receive the email) but I wonder...first 20, first 50, first 100? How crazy were we all that morning?

I'll let ya know whenever I find out!

Posted by: harambur

I also was not implying Robert had sent a virus, just that someone on that list could have had the virus already.

These days it isn't as easy to tell anymore who is the real sender of a virus.

Were there really 30-50 orders in the 3.5hrs between you and me? If so, is a spot of at most 54 (probably ~45, perhaps even less) going to be good enough for the first batch (I would think so)?? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE (I know, it is only a PVR...).

Robert, I'm sure you covered the exact procedures on what we need to do to find our place in line (sounds like filling out some paperwork, no big deal). Problem is that I've not received any emails from you guys recently and I guess with all the hoopla, I'm growing more interested in where I fall into the overall line. I can PM you my email address but don't feel like posting it here for what I hope you understand are obvious reasons. Posted by: Stuigi

...we need a 12 step program

Posted by: chriscic

So they're scheduled to build 200 the first week, and several hundred per week thereafter. And Value Electronics is scheduled to get the "lion's share" (whatever that means); even if they get more than any other retailer (which is also hard to believe) that's maybe 40 units the first week and maybe 75 each week thereafter. And that's if the production goes smoothly, which it most likely won't.

I may be sounding pessimistic but the above is based on a lot of experience lusting over new electronics products and then waiting... waiting... waiting. I'm guessing I'm 400-500 on the list and I bet I don't see mine 'til late May (don't help me out with the prediction though Robert!)

I'll enjoy my HDTivo whenever it gets here. Hey, its coming just when things start to get nice here in Chicago so maybe I won't miss it!

Just had to get my prediction on record so I can say I told ya' so later : )

BTW, I'm pretty annoyed I have to commit to another year to pay $1000 for a HDTivo. That stinks, but if that's DirecTV's and not VE's policy then they are to blame.

And I generally do LOL.....my 50" plasma, 46" RPTV, 23" LCD TV, 15" LCD TV and 9 Tivos and god knows how many regular receivers...two XBOXes, two Buttkickers, HTPC, etc. are proof enough and you'd think after that I wouldn't think twice but was trying to do my due diligence of seeing what other offers were available to me and more importantly, determine if I wanted to continue on with my HiPix card (which I will for conflicts) or retire it in favor of one or two HD Tivos...maybe I'll get lucky and be in the first 200, who knows? update...guess not, #239 not too shabby though

Well, for the record, I'm a Software Engineering Geek Extraordinarie... :) My *WIFE* is a Liberal Arts major and I was commenting on how proud I was of her recently aquired savvy to realize without prompting that #3 probably meant one of the first 30-50 manufactured units and likely there could be a bug or two (mostly likely hardware but possibly software).

So far as writing an eloquent review, I did come "this' close to being a HS English teacher. But I had a school counselor offer these fateful words of advice, "Do you really want to spend the rest of your life in a classroom with a bunch of kids your age?" That pretty much made the decision between computer science and English education an easy one. Maybe I'll still pull off a well-written review- I was editor of our HS lit-mag, went to NC Governor's School in English, and was published in our state's HS lit-mag twice. I guess there are a couple of literary bones in my body.

But of course, I have to close with my favorite liberal arts joke:

Q: What does the Carolina grad say to the NC State grad?
A: You want fries with that?

:)

Gee, thanks. Hey, just because I only have one HDTV (for now) and only the same number of TiVos as adults in the household (for now) and had to find the $99 D* HDTV deal through you doesn't mean I'm a complete boob when it comes to pre-ordering and early adopting. .. :)

Wasn't this product supposed to ship in the 4th quarter of 2003? I think people are aware it is delayed :)

Feel free to start a new thread, you really don't need permission from anyone.

Which particular delay are you thinking of. Currently it seems to be on track to get the pre-orders to the pre-orderees by the time specified, and some of us (:D) may be getting it earlier that that.

According to Doug's excellent, yet geeky, breakdown of where everyone falls in relation to Robert's updates of the number of pre-orders received, Kamakzie should be under 200 because Robert reported that he hit 200 on 1-18, and Kamakzie ordered on 1-17. Actually, Robert specifically stated that it hit 219 on 1-19. You should be much lower than 220.

I got in at 10am on 1-19 and, using Doug's chart, should be between #200-219. As a matter of fact, Robert's post that he hit 219 in the afternoon of 1-19 was a direct response to my post that day asking where my order stood. Hmmm? Waiting for Robert. . . .

That may be true, but to the extent it helps others determine where they are in line:

Top 100 baby! Now, if anyone would like to "trade up" to my -- hopefully -- 1st round pick . . . maybe for two draft choices in a lower round when Value Elecronics starts taking pre-orders for the 500 gb models ;)

Well, for one, this exercise keeps the discussion somewhat civil; and it turns it into something of a game, which is fun. :D

That actually was exactly the sort of thing I was trying to figure out by compiling the list... get a feel for the number of actual orders. Besides, now it's pretty simple for us to know who's getting one.

We are slowly rebuilding Robert's order list, as a backup in case something happens on his name ... :)

What's the harm, this thread has gone so far into the gutter there is no saving it....

Once again KCWolfPck you are correct. But you're missing the point. Everyone will find out the exact date they will receive their new HD TiVo when they actually take receipt of their new HD TiVo, but many folks are anxious and enjoy speculating/finding out where they are in line -- now -- before Robert even has the opportunity to send out emails with numbers, a task I might add, that seems of a large magnitude and to which Robert has stated he will not rush again (especially when he can only send out 12 emails at a time :) )

So, this is the pre-order thread and I find it fun, even if frustrating, not a waste of space :D

Got the new email with attachments from Robert on Saturday.

Some of what's been posted here confirms my decision not to take orders on new products until I know they're on their way to me. Thanks for keeping us informed on the progress.

Just goes to show you how much extra brain power you can have if you're not wasting it posting to this darn board all the time! We were all too busy asking each other if we'd found a place to pre-order, whether the HDTivo can be upgraded, and a billion meaningless technical fetish questions to think of yurkope's much simpler and more direct approach!

:D

YAMM? You mean your post "odometer" rolling over?

Perhaps I didn't see it because subconsciously I was hoping that #1 would say something like "demo unit" so I'd technically get the silver... Where's someone to bust some kneecaps when you need 'em?

Now repeat after me: Read this thread. The ENTIRE thread. And you will gain knowledge. :)

And the cute thing is the only reason we were able to track it down to Robert as the source so quickly was because some people use unique email addresses when filling out online order forms. ;)

I think Robert might've been thinking it was limited to only people he sent email too, forgetting that the virus would've been acting on its own sending out emails and it wouldn't have been limited only to those people to whom Robert had emailed.

If any of you who got the virus can check the timestamps in the header, and it's more recent than around the time last night Robert was informed of this, you might want to PM him, or send him an email, alerting him that it's still apparently active on one of his machines.

Hey Robert!

Considering the level of interest in this, perhaps you'd be interested in raising a little money for charity...

How about auctioning to the highest bidder one opportunity to move into the #1 position, and until such time as the unit actually ships, people can continue raising the bid for it.

Donate the proceeds to a specified charitable organization.

You could even make it even more interesting in that all bids must be paid... not just the winning bidder's. :D

Obviously you've just been lucky in the sorts of girlfriends you've had.

Why is the man always trying to keep me down?

You just want to push me down to #4! I know it! It's a conspiracy...

Here's a hot idea When our units ship, let's post all our UPS/Fedex tracking numbers so we can monitor everybody's shipping progress.;)

I'm sorry, did you say something? I couldn't hear as I was too busy falling off a turnip truck...

Hey, my wife let me buy a Sammy 61" DLP set, all new speakers, and a HR10-250... I can't complain about my fate. Maybe we should give them a girlfriend and after a couple of months check back and see if they'd rather get the chair?

It looks like Robert's estimate for units sold on 1/18 and 1/19 were understating the number by at least 50-75 units. I guess I'm kicked back big time..oh well.... :(

An interesting anomaly. Either Robert wasn't keeping count well back then, or maybe the positions given to them aren't correct -- it is a little strange we've not had any more reports of assigned positions anywhere near those numbers.

As long as there arn't only 4 delivered in the first week I'm OK with the idea. But someone could be very annoyed, depending on how many are delivered that first week.

That someone includes me, but as they say here in New Joisy....'Whayda gonna do?"

With Robert's post on 1/19 at 1:18 pm that they just hit 219, I figured my order at 12:30am that day would have me right around the 200 mark. Great news...nope! Now, I'll be lucky to make 300! (Order date 1/19, 12:33 am)

I'm just hoping production will ramp up to get the units in my eager little hands quicker!

:D

Looks like some people butted up in line as compared to Roberts original counts made in real time. All those that line busted reveal yourselves. Your fate will be determined by the masses!

You're right, I'm an evil, sexist, homophobic virus writer that had nothing better to do than to make a flippant comment without fully qualifying all the possibilities. Heaven forbid I do such a heinous thing on a forum. Surely it is a first.

For the record, my best friend (and best man at my wedding) is gay. I work with several women who would be quite capable of writing a virus if so inclined. However since it would somehow inappropriate for me to make a joke based on assuming that the gender of the virus writer was male and his sexual orientation was heterosexual (despite the vast case history that shows most identified virus/worm authors are young males), I will make the following revision:

While I agree that the viruses are evil- wouldn't a more humane solution be to get the virus writers a girlfriend/boyfriend/harem/asexual acquaintance/farm animal of their choice?

Happier? Now can we get back to discussing our place in line and how long March 2004 is going to feel?

:p

Posted by: harambur

no way i will give out my tracking number. enuff zealots on this board to hide behind the bushes and take my hd tivo as the ups guy leaves it on the porch!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: ferky1

I'd love to know what Robert thinks about all of this.

Not the girlfriend/boyfriend/harem/asexual acquaintance/farm animal stuff, the pre-order stuff

Has anyone else noticed how large the conspiracy is that is making us wait so long for our much desired HDTivo's.

Now they want us to believe that February had 29 days using a term called 'Leap year'

Sure, right, think we were all born yesterday. I'll tell ya where to leap!

What next, March will have 40 days?

I'd hope he's suitably amused.... by both... :) I have a feeling he is the only one around here that really has work to do at the moment and probably isn't reading... :)

I don't know why, but it was bothering me that doug had me down as 8:06AM...I know I must have some better things to do with my time, I must, they're around here somewhere...now where did I leave that remote? ;)

And, on a different topic, I feel sorry for Robert if he's not checking this forum every 10 minutes because he'll have to read through another 5 pages just to figure out where we are...oh wait I guess that doesn't matter since we're not saying anything substantive anyway... :)

robert sure is tough to get in touch with... he told me to call him monday and i did. woman who answered said he was not there.. i left a message and she said he would call me back tuesday... asked her if she could do us both a favor and email me the CC authorization form.. she says no problem... so at 5pm the following day (today/tuesday), no call or forms in my inbox, so i try again.. different woman, still no robert. asked her to send me the forms that i have yet to receive. she says she will send them immediately. i'm patiently waiting... but i don't see how hard it could possibly be to compose an email and attach a document, then click send. providing their DNS is working, the email should take 30 seconds tops... but 5 min and nothing. i was hoping to have this thing sent out before i left work... doesn't look like its going to happen.

i don't think i've ever had to do so much work to get someone to take $1,000 from me.

Don't panic. I just spoke to him in the last hour. They are having some big virus issues right now which can't be helping his ability to accomplish sending out emails to people. Give him time. You're really not going to suffer at all waiting a day or two for those forms to get to you.

However, if you feel it's really truly urgent, PM me your email address, and I can forward a copy of what I got. There's nothing in it order-specfic, just on one form you'll be filling in your order number.

I'm not offering to sell my unit for $2,000. I'm offering you my place in line for $2,000. You'll still have to pay the ~$899 (presuming you also pay the $100 deposit up front).

Actually I'm not necessarily offering; I'm just looking to be tempted. I may or may not accept the offer, so feel free to offer more, if interested.

Just wanted to clarify. ;)
