still having virus problems? maybe i could drive up there and get this virus thing under control for them... of course i would expect to be paid one HD DTivo unit in return for my services :D

in all seriuosness, they must have really gotten hit hard. i can't speak from experience because i've never infected myself with a virus, but we have lots of dumb users who are click happy. an hour or so later, all done... they must have some seriuos issues going on there.

no worries on sending me the form... at least i have something to joke about when i call them as it is. :D

If it works the same as in the past...the playoffs kind of get jumbled between ABC and ESPN. The final round is all on ABC, though. No help for those of us with pathetic excuses for real TV stations masquerading as ABC affiliates.

So there.

How are the positions being confirmed? Has Robert already sent out confirmations to those receiving the first ones he gets?

Posted by: Mr Pieces

I was thinking about pre-ordering one but after looking at this thread it looks like I might not get delivery until sometime in 2009.

Posted by: PJO1966

He started to but was probably distracted by the viruses that were apparently coming from his computer. Judging by the info listed, my number is around 50. I faxed my paperwork on Sunday, but I have not yet received confirmation of my exact number from Robert. I have every confidence that he is busting his butt to give us all the info we need.

Looks like 3rd week of April for me, per PM from Robert.

when did you order to get 3rd week in april?

While you certainly wouldn't get one out of his first shipment, I'd expect most of these orders will be filled by the end of April, if not a bit earlier.

I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope of finding any elsewhere just sitting on a shelf until much later, anyway.

Remember that as far as we know it's really just been Value Electronics & Good Guys taking preorders for any amount of time; most others seem to just be waiting for general availability to make them available to buyers -- if they've made any plans at all -- and those places are going to be much further down the priority list from the manufacturer since they won't have placed their orders earlier than the companies that have offered preorders to buyers. And I suspect most outlets haven't even thought of ordering these things yet for resale, since they're not yet available for shipment.

Robert's offer of refunding your deposit and canceling your order if you can get the unit elsewhere earlier still stands, too, so waiting isn't going to do anything to help you get one any sooner -- it'll only prolong the wait.

I get ABC just fine in Denver in HDTV. Yes, the signal is weak, but it's there. I'm at C470 and Bowles, not exactly in close proximity to downtown Denver, but I get a decent signal with a little outdoor UHF antenna.

I've been enjoying MNF and other HDTV programming for years on ABC already! :)

Why don't you contact user 'smallz' who wants to cancel his order and buy his position on the list from him. ;) Maybe he'll be really nice about it since otherwise he's going to lose his deposit, so he might not even charge you money for the privilege. Though if he does, maybe offering to make a charitable donation would be sufficient...

He's closer to you. But I have dibs if he doesn't mind relocating. Of course, your gadget-geek factor is probably higher, so you'd probably meet my list at least as well as he does, but again, there's that relocating thing. ;)

Relocating isn't so bad, and has some plusses for you, too. I'm beachfront here. Close to 4 major airports and one not-so-major one, too. :D

Relocation expenses are a negotiable item. No need to consider canceling your order.

When I talked to Robert yesterday he mentioned an IT team was taking everything apart in the office and at his home and I presume what he meant by that is they were going computer-to-computer updating everything, scanning, dealing with viruses found, and locking everything down such that once they did everything, they'd reconnect the network. So I'm sure he's muddling through as best he can right now and all should be back to normal soon.

There's still about 2 or 3 weeks before the first shipment of manufactured units would come out of the factory and be on their way to him, so absolutely no delay on Robert's part right now could make any difference to anyone waiting for a unit -- except to just give us more to twiddle our thumbs about here.

Posted by: turls

Preorders make no difference. Just talk to TV Authority if you think this makes a hill of beans of difference.

A bunch of us had pre-orders for Sammy DLP's. At least 200 at 3 grand a piece (the FULL PRICE paid ahead of time). We got bumped at the drop of a hat for the big guys. I think Tweeter was the manufacturer that bumped ahead of us in line.

If these things really are in short supply, I hope they aren't for VE's sake, don't plan on the deposit making any difference.

(hoping the SN/R of this thread gets better so I can just follow the progress on availability for these things).

Apologies if this is 'off topic' but as some of you may know Tweeters are also taking pre-orders at full MSRP ($999). The real news is that their quoted delivery date is no longer Mid June. They are now quoting April 15th. I'm on the list!

Historically no Tivo product was met with huge mass-market appeal. I expect the same for this product. I doubt Tweeters, or Best Buy put in a huge pre-order. Hopefully VE has a relationship with DirecTV/Hughes/whomever that he won't get bumped.

I agree with you though, DirecTV would appease their larger customers in a heartbeat if at all possible.

I have trust in the path DirecTV HD DVR's are travelling through the supply chain from the manufacturing plant to Value Electronics.

But, yes, I know the proof will certainly be in seeing them actually shipped out to us, and at our doorstep.

The jist of my posting there was that by all accounts Value Electronics is one of the very first to have placed a large order for these units, and Robert's offer to us provides an easy out if you actually were able to get it elsewhere sooner. So the worst that could happen is you end up canceling your order with VE, getting your money back, and taking delivery of it from someone else; and the best that can happen is you get it earlier for for a lesser price than it's available anywhere else.

So that makes Value Electronics, Good Guys (the retail store, not online) and Tweeters that are taking pre-orders now; anyone know of anyone else?

Where have I heard all these conjectures before...oh that's right -- when the HDVR2 came out. Everybody mocked VE for claiming that they had HDVR2s ready to ship when "big" customers like Tweeter, GG, BB, etc didn't even have them in their computer. Turns out VE was telling the truth. Imagine that.

I'm confident I'll be one of the first 100 people to get my hands on a HR-DVR-HDDVR-DTV-10-250-b (or whatever it's being called this week).

Since I had a SAT-T60, I paid almost no attention to the HDVR2 escapades... but that's a good point to remember. :)

HR10-250 is the latest incarnation of the model number. At least this model number scheme seems indicative of providing some paths in the future for new models.

HDDVR250 made a lot of sense: HighDef DigitalVideoRecorder 250GB.
I don't get what HR stands for. Hughes Recorder? And what's the 10 all about? Revision 1.0 maybe?

Maybe they should spend that time installing some G5's instead. ;)

Seems to be what FedEx is doing:

No conjecture about it--if push comes to shove--and maybe it won't--the only way to really be on the manufacturers short list (at least on a "small" pre-order) is for it to be paid IN FULL with the MANUFACTURER. That's the facts.

Maybe the last model was under the radar of the "big guys", maybe this one is--maybe it isn't.

I can tell you it might have been under their radar when I ordered the TV, but by the time it was ready to ship--it wasn't under anybody's radar.

I agree it isn't a big deal--it is a small deposit--but the basic point is a pre-order makes no difference.

I was kind of assuming a revision numbering scheme for the "10". "HR" might be "High-definition Recorder". 250's obviously recording capacity in GB or GiB, whichever makes it sound bigger than reality.

HD-DVR250 was fine and perhaps clearer with HD for High-Definition, but left no easy place for revision indicators, except by adding something later, which would lead to some confusion as people would be accustomed to the prefix part of the new model (say HD-DVR250-2) and tend to not mention the -2.

No real need to put "DirecTV"/DTV in there considering (a) it's only DirecTV that'll be selling them soon, and (b) by some accounts the unit technologically could be updated only with software and be Echostar/DVB-compatible.

Damn, it's nice to have a break from updating that chart and to bable on about something else that's pointless. ;)

Anybody that promotes the retail price at $200.00 above the REAL retail price wouldn't get my business. EVER.

Orbit Satellite = Crooks!

Posted by: harambur

if somethign goes wrong with your order, orbitsat is the last company you want to be dealing with.

it took weeks for them to sort out an error with the multiswitch i needed. i almost had to get an attorney involved.

Posted by: Alexander

Ok, so here's a question: If I'm in an accident, and I go to get my car repaired, they want $xx to write up an estimate. If I then agree to do the repairs, do they still charge me for the estimate?

...what does that have to do with the price of an hdtivo in my possession

Posted by: Darin

And more importantly... you have an hdtivo in your possession?

ya.... i'm not saying i would buy from them.. they just came up when i did a google search a month or so ago.

i can't get past their g00gly loooking website... ugh.

Posted by: lew

Don't count on using orbitsats lowest price policy. They exclude limited quantities, waiting list and back ordered product status.

Further Orbitsat must list the item in stock in their web site.

HDTV Tivo are likely to be in that category for at least the first month or so. Orbitsat can just list the item as out of stock in their web site.

Time of Order: 1/16/2004 7:31:07 PM

Thanks for doing this.

Based on your data, I estimate that I my order position is somewhere around 110.

I have been a satellite user since 1984, DirecTV since 1996 or 1997, and TIVO since July 2001. I wouldn't go HDTV without TIVO!

Currently sitting here with a new Sony 61 inch Plasma KDE61XBR950 HDTV (first on the west coast, I believe) and DirecTV will be my only access to HDTV.

Can't wait!

Thanks again.

Order # 13224, 2/1/04 6:34PM

Posted by: buzzword

And then there's this gem further on down the page:

* Internet Orders Only. Limited time offer for new residential subscribers who purchase a DIRECTV® System from DigitalSat.com. Requires activation within 30 days of order. If you are a current DIRECTV subscriber you can either buy a standalone receiver at the discounted prices above, or if you are in need of a complete DIRECTV System add $250.00 to the advertised price of the complete DIRECTV® System of your choice. You can denote if you're an Existing Customer at Checkout.

So they're basically charging you an additional $250 for a dish if you're not an existing DTV customer. They don't even mention the install, I'm willing to bet the $250 doesn't include it.

A pox on them!

I'm still mystified about what this has to do with preordering HDTivos, but in general, no, they would not charge you for the estimate if you get the repairs done there. Estimates are generally applied towards the cost of the repair. YMMV of course, so I'd check with them to be sure.

But I repeat...huh??

This isn't a list from Value Electronics; it's one we've created from the posts people have made here.

Wow... you people are crazy. :)

I can't wait for my HDTivo, but man, some people seem to lust after this thing. ;)

I am not gonna bother Robert about anything, I am not worried, and I think I ordered quick enough to see this thing by 2nd week in April at least.

The guy is doing everyone a serious favor here by doing all this extra work to keep forum members happy. I would have thought the pre-order deal was enough. Oh well, everyone seems happier than the zillion past threads I have been reading though... hehe...

Posted by: the-sloth

for the record and so my response doesn't get misconstrued in any way.. i am not complaining but rather amused at how long and how much work it took to get the required paperwork completed. at least i had something to joke about when calling VE :D.

Posted by: dr_mal

Something to consider...

I got my sequence number PMd to me here very shortly after posting my info. When I made my pre-order, I didn't (and I suspect nobody else did either) give him my TC username. So he didn't have a good way to correlate my username to an order.

Also, I posted my full order number, which made it very easy for Robert to look up where that order number was in his master list. Most of you have been xing out one or more digits, which doesn't help Robert find your order.

Since TC (or AVS) membership is a prerequisite for this preorder deal, it makes sense that he'd use TC PM functionality to notify you of your position.

Of course, this is all speculative on my part, but maybe if you posted your full order number, Robert could get your position a little quicker.

If you guys are gonna do this to me, please include your date/time too, so I don't have to look through this rather lengthy non-alphabetical list. ;) And yeah, I know it's "basically" ordered by order number, but I have my reasons.

BTW, I doubt this will really help Robert; he's already getting your username via the paperwork he's asked to be faxed to him; and short of that, he does have your email address already since you compelted an online order.

Posted by: Korkle

Yes there are a number of us who are "lusting" after this thing. MOST of us, however, are leaving Robert and the folks at VE alone so they can take care of their everyday business. I am sure they will get the info out to us as soon as possible including position in the que. Meanwhile, Doug has given us a means by which to pass the time (April is still a few weeks away) and a way to guess our place in line. It is harmless fun --- a great time killer --- and keeps the thread alive. It also is a great introduction to those members who will be the backbone of the new threads about this toy when the unit finally ships.

I already did yours; I was just more concerned about another onslaught.

But I really don't think this is necessary at all. He will have this info from other means, and isn't telling people their position until he has that paperwork from people anyway.

Hey Doug, I think you're crazy for starting the list, but I do appreciate it. It's one of the cool things about TCF that people will invest their time like this.

But I do have a request. Can you start another thread with your list at the top of the thread. Then whenver you update it just edit the first message. That would make it a lot easier to find than having to remember what page of this thread it was posted on last.

He didn't have my paperwork when he sent me my position. I'm not even sure if he'd sent out the big e-mail yet at that point.

But yeah, once you've sent in your paperwork, he'll have your username, order number, and e-mail tied together.

And Doug -- you're welcome :D

Well, I'll add more information, for that list. I haven't received anything from VE, nothing at all since I ordered. I had to call just to make sure they actually had the order in the system.

Even though I see at least one person that has received the forms, with a higher order number than me. They also never answer emails, so I'll just wait and see if I ever get anything... Appears to be plenty of time left, hopefully not much longer than everyone is expecting though.

I don't have the exact time because its didn't show up when I place the order, on the page I printed out.

Doug:

I am one of the lurkers you referenced.

I have to admit that I have been lurking for months. I have been tracking the speculation on the TIVO/HD/DirecTV box but didn't join in. While a competent A/V do-it-your-selfer, I am not in a position to give advice, and am otherwise reticent. I have not found it necessary to ask any questions, only track the issues you guys have been involved with. Fantastic!

This forum has been incredible. As a result of you guys I have sorted out how to upgrade from my 1997 DirecTV installation to a three bird HDTV capable setup. Your info gave me the requisite understanding that led me to the Phase III dish and the requisite 4*8 multiswitch configuration.

In particular, I have to send kudos to Feldon - his explanations have been clear and very understandable.

I am now all configured with all cables in place and just awaiting the delivery of this wonderful new box (order position estimated at 110).

Thanks again - you guys are great.

Sounds to me like you are not recieving emails from them. About 30 or 40 pages back (only half kidding....), Robert said something about AOL filtering emails from VE. Maybe your ISP is filtering his emails too.

Pay it forward, sherlocc. Jump into the fray and answer (or even just confirm another answer) sometime; if you get it wrong or miss something, someone else'll be there to correct you -- we all started out like that in some fashion -- and you'll get confident you're giving accurate advice with a little time. :)

Good to have ya here!

Thanks Doug! Glad to be here!

I just want to take this opportunity to welcome all the new people who've obviously posted for the first time here; I've noticed a lot of folks with just 1 or 2 posts who've said they bought one of these HD units. I don't know how many of you might've just been lurking around anyway, but it's good to have some new blood posting!

I have been on AVS for a while and lurk here from time to time. I recently made the switch from Replay (because of the HDTivo) and this forum has been great in helping with the transition (I couldn't live with out my 30sec quick skip). You guys are great!

Any way this thread has gotten way out of hand, and I love it. it's the most fun I have had on line since I found Homestarrunner.

I sent Robert an email about some other stuff related to The HDTivo and added a request for my place in line. Mainly because I am curious how accurate Doug's list turns out to be.

oh BTW my order time was 7:59:22 pm.

It's not like you have nothing to offer. I've already learned something from you: I had to look up reticent.

:D

Isn't there a dictionary thread around here?

I also have been lurking for a while. Didn't have a TiVo so did not bother to post .... just read and learn. Now moving from replay and UTV to TiVo. So expect to see me hanging around trying to get up to speed with you old-timers. Thanks to all of you - in this thread and others- for the education in TiVo you have given me. I'm ready (I think).
