Ya know, when I typed that, I knew I was opening myself up! Like I said, I am an experienced lurker who hasn't missed the byplay in this forum. It clearly is part of the fun. I will try to stretch my vocabulary every now and then just to make sure you guys stay awake out there.
By the way, about your skunks, unlike Georgia we don't have any 4 legged skunks in downtown Seattle. Some 2 legged ones, mostly in politics out here on the left coast.

Pre-ordered on 1/18 and still haven't received an email or PM from Robert.

Alright, enough is enough. From now on, nobody gets to post an order number and time/date that is earlier than mine.
For all you "Johnny-post info-come latelys": If you haven't posted your info by now, too bad. I don't care when you actually placed the order; back to the end of the queue for you!

Well that's a bit backwards... they are the only ones who can post information that may be relevant to you. :p

Let's now do some bartering, trading, swapping, fighting or whatever. I appear to be about #280 or so. Anyone in the 50 and under group want to swap positions. Opening bid is $50 plus a D* non-hd reciever. Any takers?

I assume that list is not complete since I have a confirmed order on 1/20 but am not listed.

Methinks the list should probably start including a disclaimer on how it's compiled. :D
Tony, if you haven't posted your order information in this thread, Doug doesn't know about your order, and can't add it to the list.

A few questions. I simply can't read all the pages in this thread. It appears that I need to fill out some form and send it to someone? Is that correct? I haven't been notified by anyone. It also looks like I am beyond the 200 mark. Is this the new magic number for being in the first shipment? What is going on? I thought he was getting 350? What is the anticipated date of shipment for the first 200 vs the next xxx units? HELP
Posted by: cheridave
Me, I'm a "TIVO Virgin", mostly been over at AVS bothering the Plasma folks.
I have a HDR-230 which serves my interim very well. I like things simple and the HD-TIVO should help eliminate another component from my system.
I hereby delete my self assigned "#206" and now assign "#216" based on Doug's updates.

As I understand the situation that exists now, there's a partial week's build of machines coming a little earlier than originally expected. There will be 200 units built that week, some or many of which will go to Robert to fulfill orders. Then he will continue to get units each week as more are manufactured until his backlog of preorders are filled.
There are other retailers in the queue, of course, but I believe Robert was the first to order any, so whatever manner DirecTV uses to decide on the allocation, there's a decent chance Robert's higher on the list. I've heard numbers varying from 400 to 800 units as to what's going to be manufactured each week (after the first partial week's manufacturing).
I think everyone involved is still generally expecting those first 350 units to get to Robert by the first week of April; it's just that some are going to be getting there a little earlier.
You will get an email from Robert containing two forms to fill out regarding your order. One is a standard DirecTV commitment; the other is from Robert and contains the terms you've already seen when you placed your order online (regarding returns/cancelations) and also is helping him confirm your shipping desire and address and credit card to bill the balance to, in case you want it billed somewhere other than where the deposit was charged.
Those forms have to be returned to him before your unit ships, but otherwise has no effect on your order or position in the queue.
Finally, Robert had some virus issues in the last few days and has had to deal with them; they occurred just as he was starting to send out those emails. GIve him a chance to get that cleaned up and he'll be back to it soon, I'm sure.

It's not an "official" list, the only way to get on it is to post the time and date of your order, then Doug will add you. This info can be found in the very first line of your order confirmation email from VE.

I am a Pegasus customer, so I have been missing out on all of the preordering fun up to now. There also aren't any Good Guys or a Tweeter stores in my state, so I decided to call Ultimate Electronics. They have the "Hughes HR10250" in their system for $999.95. They expect to receive their first shipment 4/15/2004. I placed an order today, for which I paid a $350 deposit. They tell me I am going to receive the first one that is delivered to that store. :)
The salesman told me they were ordering something like 2000 units. The news in this thread suggests that they may not receive that many until the end of the year at the earliest.

Tivo just announced pretty good earnings for the quarter with a upwardly revised outlook for new subscribers. It might be worth tuning into the webcast of their conference call to see if there is any mention of the upcoming HD release.
You can access the call here... htxx://biz.yahoo.com/cc/7/39847.html (sorry about the xx, only my second post)
I will try to listen in (but may not be able to) and post if anything is mentioned.

Existing customers get the HD TiVo "box" only. New D* customers get the "extras". FWIW, I can highly recommend the Zenith Silver Sensor.
VE has a good price on them.

Are you sure new customers get an OTA antenna installed Larry? I thought Voom was the only company that included OTA installation as well...

My post says existing customers do NOT get the OTA antenna.
However, new DirecTV customers will probably get the extra rooms, dish, and installation like most of us did when we signed up as a newbie. As to the OTA antenna, I would assume if their new install includes the HD receiver TiVo or non-TiVo style that would include an OTA antenna of some kind. However, we all know what happens when we assUme. :)
Posted by: gunzour
I am fairly sure DTV was offering OTA antenna installation for their HD STB (non Tivo) offer.
I really want an HD Tivo, but I'm not going to buy one unless someone will do OTA antenna installation (whether for 'free' or not). I'd kill myself if I tried to climb up on my roof myself! (And all of the non-roof solutions I have tried have failed.)

The OTA antenna is provided only in certain test areas. DTV is trying to figure out how well that will do before making it generally available.

I thought VE was East Coast based, so the units have to ship from Mexico to the East Coast, then get packaged up and shipped out from there.
Does VE have a West Coast warehouse or something?

I'm pretty sure that if you are buying from VE then shipping will be from VE (in New York). Which is vaguely annoying since the trucks carrying them to VE are driving in from Mexico.
Perhaps I'll drive down to the border and do a little truckjacking at the end of the month...

This was posted yesterday in the AVS forum...
Also from Robert of with I meet last weekend at the shop up at Scarsdale, New York, I needed a new multi-switch. "When they come out of Mexico", which is the place they are being built. (When he is informed of that *firm target date due to his arrangements, and out of US Customs) he is flying “Out West” to accept his quota delivery in person with some guys from the shop and to set and distribute from Out West via (UPS? or FedEx? Which ever shipping method you chose in your pre-order) the shipments out to those who had pre-orders with Value Electronics in Scarsdale, New York.
He said from the time he ships his stock out, within 5 business days, everyone who is placed on his 1st list should have it in there possessions.
If you have had (*as in my case a $100.00 charged to your credit card) you are on that 1st list, as per Robert. He says it's still April, as far as he knows....
Robert also is dying to see (aren't we all!) if another Hard Drive can be added. Claims he will post Photo's on this AVS Forum when he can open one up, and tinker! Robert is a very kind person, and very knowledgeable. I think down the road if I need any electronics be it Plasma, LCD, or LG Products, he gets my business. As we were talking I was leaning on a boxed 60in Pioneer Plasma screen…Gezzzzzzeeee!
He came across as a very pleasant man and I hope this buying experience goes well for
Myself and all who placed orders with Value Electronics.
I can’t wait.
Posted by: hongcho
Read a couple of pages above. Someone mentioned that Robert and crew will be coming out to the West Coast to receiive their initial allocation and ship them from there. Of course, this didn't came exactly from Robert directly, though.
Hong.

Okay, I see that money may talk, but how about the sympathy factor?
I pre-ordered two HDTivos, one on Feb 1 and one on Feb 7. Will anyone trade ONE spot in the top 100 for these TWO spots?
See, I want to give one to my dear old mother. She is not in good health and her last, semi-dying wish is to be able to pause HD TV in order to go to the bathroom or take her medicine. Will you make an old woman happy?
Also, it appears that most people posting are guys. I know it's only March, but Christmas will be here before you know it. Guys are notorious for waiting until the last moment to buy for loved ones. I know, because I'm a guy. If you take me up on my offer, you can finish your shopping early and make your mother-in-law very happy at Christmas.
In short, benefits to you: (1) making an old woman happy, (2) saving time at Christmas and (3) making your mother-in-law very happy.
What's a few days waiting for a stupid piece of electronics compared to the absolute joy you will have in doing yourself and others a fantastic favor?

Opposite situation here...I'm in CA so I chose Next day Air (didn't want to wait for those trucks to drive across the country), which may turn out to have been an unnecessary waste of bucks. I'm not worried though, I'm sure Robert will clarify the situation whenever he gets a chance (and I'll live, even if I paid for faster shipping than I needed to).

Don't forget, it would take time for them to go from Mexico to California to New York. If he had them shipped from CA to VE in New York, then turned around and shipped it to you, that would actually take longer. By shipping directly to all customers from CA, everyone is getting them sooner.
Of course, if I find out where he's shipping from, I might just go and pick mine up. ;)

Makes a LOT of sense for VE to go to Mexico to ship directly...that saves VE their own shipping costs of getting the boxes in the first place.

I know that I will be Rack Mounting mine. I was tempted to go ahead and order a rack kit for a SD-DVR40 and hope that it fits. But I decided to hold off. I have a SD-DVR40 racked in a MidAtl rack kit right now. When the HD Tivo shows up I will see if it fits in that rack, and turn around and order one (not waiting for the DB @ MidAtl to be updated). If it doesn't fit, I will just wait until they have the kit.
The Silver kit looks great with the SD-DVR40.

This thread is hell trying to catch up to it. I somehow stopped getting the emails after about page 25 and thought it went quiet. (Should have known better.) It was hard to explain to the wife why I spent my free time the last 3 nights reading 1,000 posts. But it is good practice for the millions of posts that will be coming during shipping: "Mine's not here", "Mine's still not here", "Mine's finally here - ha ha", etc.
I am afraid of what a brat I'll be if mine doesn't come before the Masters though... Are you allowed to throw a hissy fit in your 30's?
Robert and Wendy, you guys rock. Glad the flaming has stopped. Hope that VE and all of us don't get the shaft by a big box store weaseling to the front of the production line.

That is what Robert had said earlier in this thread (don't even ask me to try to find it!)... you might drop them an email as you are potentially in the first shipment so you should make sure they're not having trouble mailing it to you.

Again, if you figure in the time it would take for the shipment to come from CA to VE and for them to process and ship you your order, you'll be getting it a few days earlier if they ship it direct to you from CA. There are a few reasons for Robert to ship to customers direct from CA.
1. He doesn't have to pay to have 300 units shipped to him.
2. Since all the units will come into LA, shipping them direct from there ensures that West Coast orders will be filled before the local stores have the units, thus avoiding cancellations that might occur under the "if you can find it somewhere else first" policy.
3. While West Coast people would get them much sooner than envisioned, everyone (even those who live a block away from VE) will get them sooner by them not having to be double shipped.
I'm just not seeing a downside here, guys.

Ok, so I had to leave town for the next four days for a funeral but KNEW if I didn't stay on the board I'd need another day and a half to get through the messages...
I have already posted thoughts on most items but I did want to express my thanks to Doug for "The List". It was an outstanding method to diffuse the whole situation we had going a couple of days ago. Although I am still looking forward to the "I just heard the truck got a flat on I-10 outside of El Paso, does than mean my unit will be delayed?" thread...
As for the speculation on shipping. Maybe I missed an earlier reply or post, but as nice as it would be to expedite shipping by avoiding the transit time, I just don't see this working. Skipping all the logistical accounting stuff, just the fact that Robert would be at the mercy of a third party for every unit that "didn't" arrive would want me to be sure I had every unit in "my" hands before I sent them to their final owner. Can you imagine this thread and the posts to Robert when people starting getting their units out of sequence? And what would he be able to do about it then? At this point, I'm just thinking, "Don't rock the boat"...
And I guess just for fun and games I will add myself to Doug's list. I did mention in a much earlier post most of my order info but it was before Doug started the "list".
I ordered on 2/9 via phone at approx. 09:30 PST. My order number is 5375X I believe (I am out of town so am relying on memory). Robert PM'd me yesterday saying I am third week April but not my exact number yet.
And finally, although I will be towards the back I have to say for my own accord that I am just pleased to be getting a unit. I like many have had multiple TiVo's since 1999 and HD at the same time so have been waiting for years like you. But the fact that I can even afford to drop a grand on this while at the same time just coming back from a holiday trip, an anniversary trip planned in April with my wife, one daughter's birthday in April and right now I am 1200 miles from home for four days due to the sudden death of a family member which cost us some change to be sure is amazing. Not to wax poetic but with as many of us that are on here as ordered there are still a lot more that are just watching from the sidelines who can't order. Or worse yet, some have ordered who "really" can't afford to and will suffer for it in other ways whether via spouse or creditor.
Sorry to carry on gang, maybe it's the funeral, maybe just the rollercoaster thread but felt compelled to put in my "two cents".
Best of luck to all as the clock keeps counting down...

If Robert can arrange with DirecTV to take delivery where they cross the border, his plan is to go out himself to perform the shipping tasks. No third party will be involved.

From reliable sources:
Robert and Wendy are traveling to Tijuana, Mexico the week of March 22 to assist in the final assembly and QA of the first 200 units.
They will then load the units on contract burros and travel to the US boarder. After bribing the Mexican boarder guards, they will process the unit through U.S. customs and then deliver them to FedEx for shipment leaving the burros in the capable hands of the Mexican authorities.

I'm not Doug, but I live about an hour away on the other side of NJ (flemington for those who care.)
ANyway we are within the 1 day garaunteed ground distance from Roberts shop in NY. So if they units ship from Scarsdaled we only need to pay for ground to get overnight delivery, but if they come from The west coast, its 7 days by ground.
If They ship form the left coast and we pay ground we'll get it basically the same day as if would if we picked ground from Scarsdale. But If we pay for overnight and they ship from CAm we can get it about a week earlier. I cant control my urges so i think i might need to fork over the extra cash just to get it a week earlier if thats in fact Roberts plan. But since I'm down the list, I think i wont get my box till the 2nd or 3rd shipment so I doubt he'll be doing those from CA anyhow.

Here's another downside I thought of while driving to the office...
If Robert goes to California to ship them, he's subjecting himself to the possibility of needing to collect California sales tax on those units he ships to California. Which would mean he either leaves himself open to a later claim, then has to try to collect it from people or pay it out of his own pocket, or he has to collect it from people beforehand, which makes for that much more of a headache.
I would guess this particular issue is not well addressed in the law, but maybe since it's California, it is... don't know. But it's something Robert should consider and review before doing any shipping in this manner.

I guess I don't see the downside to having it shipped from CA. You can have it on it's way the next day to you even if you ordered ground or wait a week for it to arrive by truck to NY, another day to process the order and then the UPS ground. The way I see it by him going out to meet the shipment it either would make no difference in the time of your delivery and could potentially save almost two weeks to those with UPS ground on the west coast. I am thinking way to go the extra mile again, Robert. By the way I have Fed Ex overnight so I figure I gained the time for the order to travel by truck to NY.

Good thought, but I don't think it's a problem. His business location is NY. As long as he doesn't maintain an office (ie: place of business) in CA, shipping them himself from CA would be the same as if he were drop shipping from a distributor in CA.

Here's a thought from my paranoid mind...
What are the odds that DirecTV will have this model number in their system when we go to activate them?

What does it say about all this, that evey time Doug posts the list, I have to check it to see that I'm still #4.

If Doug didn't exist we would have to invent him.

I've activated receivers before that they knew nothing about. It's not a big deal. Well maybe it's a big deal when you get the wrong CSR... ;) I've also activated receivers online that are not in their list, and I just pick another one that's sorta close from the same manufacturer.

Now you have all done it, picked the plan apart to the point of showing illegalities about sales tax collection. Just shut up and let Robert do it in what ever way he wants. It will take him another week or two if you all keep strapping him with legalities. No one would ever know anyway until now!

I looked at the activate new equipment web page yesterday. They have a menu item for "HNS - unknown".

Pretty high knowing past experience but no matter as you just need to pick a Rcvr similiar (i.e. HD) and have them activate it under that code. You can then call in later if you ever want to update their database. Been there done that...
Of course with the wrong CSR on the phone who knows what damage they can cause you...:)

See, we don't just bicker. We pick things apart. I think that's a new activity for this thread, actually.

If it turns out this is necessary, it would only be required of those with California addresses in the first shipment. He's not going to do this every week he gets more units. ;)

8.25% in Los Angeles.

7.5% state tax, add 0.75% in LA county, 0.25% in Orange County.
