Doug - perhaps you should create a new thread for this, with the list as the first post, and keep updating/editing that first post as you get more information.

For an example of something like this, see the Washington DC / Baltimore HD Information thread on AVS - h**p://avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?threadid=275834 (I would make this a normal url, except I haven't posted enough here yet).

Someone's already suggested it. I'm resisting for a couple reasons...

1) It's fun to see this thread get such a high number of posts and viewers and any new thread would be starting from 0 again.

2) By my reposting it every 2 pages (if you set each page to 40 posts displayed), I at least get one more postcount now and then for all the effort involved in updating the list. ;) Plus I get to answer suggestions like yours with another post!

3) More people are already subscribed to this thread, so by continuing to post related info in it, more people are likely to (eventually) visit it and add their info to the list.

4) Since there will come a time all pre-orders are shipped, it's not really an ongoing FAQ-like thread where it'll be around forever and reference forever, so it doesn't matter as much as those threads people will go to for the most current info on a subject forever.

Well, without beating this subject into the ground, the law referenced was really set up in hopes that the federal government will eventually require sales tax to be charged in all states for internet sales.

Case law dictates that a "substantial nexus" be established between the business and their operation in a state to require the collection of sales tax and has interpreted the law much more narrowly than the broad interpretation that can be made from reading section 6203.

That being said, I suppose there's a chance in a million that the state could attempt to collect sales tax from VE and be successful, but they haven't tried it to date with anyone else to my knowledge. It would be easier to go after the residents (like me ;) ) who are required to pay that tax (which nobody does). I'd hate to have to come out of retirement and reactivate my CA State Bar membership.

Anyway, it makes for good discussion.

8.25 where I live. In theory anyone in California is already supposed to pay tax on it, they're even giving us a line on our state tax form where we can fess up to such out of state purchases. (Previously you had to go fill out some forms no one knew about, no one did.) So we can't hide from it.

Of course, this is not a sales tax, its a "use tax" (it just quacks like a sales tax). I just fail to see how this blatently unconstitutional imposition ever got past the supreme court.

This has nothing to do with Tivo. It's the manufacturer for DirecTv/Hughes in Mexico, which will presumably send them in through L.A.

That's one good reason, along with the money (if you can get a job) and a relaxed atmosphere. Sales tax may be 8.25%, but property taxes are severly constrained thanks to prop 13. (Around 1% of the price you payed, whenever that might have been).

So where do you live? You don't admit to it.

Hmmm. Born here, went to school here, got a job here... Both my wife's parents and my parents live here (As well as the rest of our combined families)... The weather is great... can get to the Mountains within a hour or two drive.... The beach much less depending on where you live...

The only issue I have with where I live is the Traffic (Yes, that's a captial T).

About a hundred pages ago I thought I read a post by Robert that the first shipment was March 22nd and it was only half of the original pre-order. I assume that other pre-orders(like GoodGuys that I preordered from) would also be about half. Is that where it stands now?

See my post on the subject: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...179#post1783179

That's about the latest understanding of what is going on, without anything on Robert's plan to meet the shipment in San Diego after it clears US Customs and send them out to us directly from there (which is still a maybe).

I totally agree with JohnTivo! Since I grew up here as well, we know the short cuts to avoid the traffic. Doesn't always work but, hey you can get a tan while waiting. Yes even in the winter!
Also the internet provides relief from the sales tax. At least we are all counting on that.

Maybe it would be more fun to ask what people think is going on in the background of my picture. Ask questions that require only a yes or no answer, and I'll respond. When you've clarified it completely and accurately, I'll say so.

Aside from the HNG, the background looks like it could be a slidding door or some sort of full length window... reflecting the setting sun maybe. My guess is a BBQ on patio or balcony. HNG could be just trying to get a tan. :)

A question for the masses:

I know the HD Tivo will come standard with a WD250GB HDD. Do you know if it is upgradeable? Can you install another drive in the system? Also, is the drive EIDE (aka Enhanced IDE) or SATA (aka Serial ATA)?

Just changing the thread a bit.

Not sure, but Doug's avatar comes with one WD250GB Nipple but I believe it can be upgraded to two. I believe it uses the old ENDI HDD interface (Electronic Nipple Device Interface).

That would be cool - plus I'd definitely have one of the first since I wouldn't have to wait for the shipping.

The purpose of this sort of exercise or game is to narrow down the true answer to a question through a series of questions that enable you to go in specific directions with later questions. Tossing out random guesses only wastes questions. Now we didn't specify a limit on the number of questions, however at some point this cannot be allowed to overwhelm the original purpose of this thread. So in the interests of that, the judges suggest that this timeout be extended for a minimum of 60 minutes. Conveniently, this allows Doug to drive from his office to his home and make a stop along the way at the bank.

Would this be one of the posts?

Do I get any points for that? :)

Regarding the tax issue:

Unless Robert has obtained a California business license in order to ship directly from the Customs broker's warehouse, he is still a New Jersey business. I'm not a lawyer, but my (admittedly limited) experience in this area leads me to believe that he wouldn't need to collect CA sales tax on shipments to CA addresses.

That said, CA residents are legally responsible for remitting use tax on out-of-state purchases for which sales tax is not collected. The use tax tracks the CA state sales tax rates exactly. And I just *know* that all the CA residents here will be including an extra ~$80 use tax payment on next year's state income tax return for their HDTivo, RIGHT?

:)

Also, I'm sure this info is around here somewhere, but I'll risk being annoying and ask: How may units are predicted to ship initially?

The lurker speaks...

I updated the order listing with the info I've posted about earlier so it's easier to find. Look at the bottom of the post: http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-v...438#post1786438

I haven't done any research, however Robert is more than welcome to park his truck at my house. There's a UPS facility just 3 miles from my house. :D

Doug,

You are the man on the spot.

Thanks...

Just got a PM from Robert,

#125.... hopefully good enough for the first shipment.

Posted by: aaronwt

By dswallows' list I must be around #330. If I would have just checked the forum a few days earlier I could have been in the first 100, but from the look of things, even that far down on the list, we should get it in early April. Now I'm wondering If I should order another one. I just put my DSt3000 on Ebay and I could put one of my existing Dtivos up for auction as well. A few more items for auction and I could cover that second HDTiVo.

It's official now, I'm #218. Oh well, could be worse.

Feeling pretty depressed at this point. Been monitoring the activity on the HD Tivo over at the avs forum, clearly should have been here. I have read about 30 pages of this thread thus far, I have not found where to send my order info to VE to find out my exact spot on the list could someone post that info for me please. Thanks all

It seems from Doug's list like VE is going through the orders in sequence (which is logical to me) and have sent the position numbers from 1 through about 270 so far. These are somewhat manual and are sent to one customer at a time. There's got to be a ton of work to do overall. But you don't have to send your information back in to them to get the email with your spot on the list, you just have to come up next.

Or did all of you who have your place in line specifically e-mail VE to ask?

The first weeks production is supposed to be 3/22/2004, where about 200 units are supposed to be coming off the line.

I suppose there's one camp that's wishfully thinking it's 3/22/2004 where the 200 units are being shipped (meaning they were made the week/weekend prior), and the other camp where 3/22/2004 is when they start making them and it'll be towards the end of the week when those units are shipped. ;)

Order # 1267X
Time of Order: 1/17/2004/4:14:03
Wendy Says: 206

Posted by: RightHere

Well, I'm a little bummed out by the official notification that I'm #205. By the unofficial count, I seemed solidly in the top 200. :( Oh well, guess that means another week or two of watching crappy movies on HDNet. Maybe HD Sopranos in April. I knew I waited too long to pull the trigger.

Looking at the order list, Robert's post of "around" 100 was almost dead
on (104). By 163, the count was off by at least 25 (188). By 200, the count was off by at least 67 (267). By 219 it's off by almost 100 (311)! Looks like it's back on track w/ >350 units. No conspiracy theories here, just interesting data.

So, now that that's out of the way...who is going to pay for the IcyHot that Robert & his crew will need on 3/23? ;)

The list has fewer than 1/2 of the first 300 orders on it. There's 60 orders on the list between #300 and where Robert said they were over 350. So I'm guessing they're all similarly (growingly -- is that a word?!) incorrect.

Judging based entirely on order numbers, the order numbers on #1 and #300 look to match up pretty closely with the count of 300.

OK, I'm a little fearful about posting this but:

Time of Order: 1/16/2004 11:27:10 AM
Order Type: Email
Order ID: 124xx
Number: 9

So, please don't hurt me, at least not until you find the other 8 people first. :D

I'd of posted this sooner, but I must have read that email like 12 times before I realized by place in line was in the subject but not repeated anywhere else. I rarely do more than scan the subject of an email, and this time that didn't help me any.

Well, if anyone wanted to hurt you because you were #9, they already could have pretty much guessed your position. Though I suppose you could've actually been #7 since the time on the list for you was originally just an estimate.

Funny how rogo hasn't confirmed he's #2 yet... or jagerbuddy #12... ;)

Well we have had over 500 posts in less than 4 days...it should be no problem to break the 2k mark before anyone ever touches one. Still a lot more positions to be posted too.

just my 2 cents

Hmmmmm

We're running about 130-140 per day over the last 4 days. And that seems to be growing.

I think we'll be well over 3,000 posts before the units start shipping.

Posted by: TallGuy

It is taking a serious amount of time this week to read or even scan all of these. I might need a vacation from this thread to rest up for the threads about what works and doesn't work once we receive the units.

If what I am seeing in Doug Swallow's list is accurate, and making the presumption
that the list and numbers are only relative to the pre-orders, calculating ones
position should be a simple matter. Correct me if I'm wrong. I didn't really have to
say that ; did I? If order # 12504 is # 29 on the list, then 12504 minus 28= 12476,
or #1. My order number is 13560. If I subtract 12476 from 13560 I get a difference
of 1084. That differential should be my position on the list. It seems that I am going
to wait a long time for my magic box to arrive.

Orders for other things do seem to be included, though there don't seem to be a lot of them.

There are probably some people who ordered more than one on the same order too; not sure if those are accounted for at all in the position numbers.

But I don't think you will really have a "long" wait. Pretty recently they were quoting 3rd week of April for deliveries.

The current offer is $10.00 off any Total Choice package for 6 months.

He should still call because I don't know if that applies to him or not; that changed recently -- 3/1, I think.

Kamakzie,

Thanks, except I looked for that just like in the AVSForum Profile, but guess what- its not to be found.

Could it be based on the number of Posts one has before it becomes available?

I know "Experience" has its Privileges and if I must pay my "Dues" then so be it.

Probably AVS has the option disabled.

It's normally in the "Optional Information" section, where, in order, you'll see:

Homepage
ICQ Number
AOL Instant Messenger Handle
Yahoo Messenger Handle
Signature
Birthdate
Custom User Text

If you don't see it there, then I guess it must only become active after a certain number of posts. Hang around this thread for long, and you'll get there fast. ;)

Kamakzie -

In addition you will need the $10.99 HDTV package, 4.99 for the TiVo fee and $5 for each receiver after the first.

I know recently they were knocking $20 off the Premier package for six months and with that they waive the $5 TiVo fee. You will probably want to get HBO and Showtime for their HDTV stuff and of course who knows what's coming in the next few months...Cinemax has been talked about. So, you may want to seriously consider the Premier package if you can swing the monthly. Run the numbers different ways and when you call remember that they will want to have to subscribe to more channels, even at a discount initially. That's all gravy for them. Be polite, but firm.

Of course, I'm bad. I can justify anything if I try hard enough! ;)

Am I the only one that thinks the volume of orders we're seeing is pretty amazing. I mean, we're talking 1 vendor from basically 2 web sites and a $1000 item. And VE must easily be above the 500 unit mark by this point. That's half a million dollars for one vendor from 2 websites. Obviously that's not all profit. But it's still a lot of money for a product that hasn't even been released yet.

Anyway, I just find it all pretty amazing.

It is amazing. And you know what else I find amazing? The storm of messages that has swept this forum as a result, and how so many of us (myself included!) feel compelled to check in multiple times a day.

This pre-order feeding frenzy would make a great story for Reuters or CNet's www.news.com.

When I joined the avs board in 2000, it was to find info on a projector for my new home theatre (it was a 50th Bday present to myself). I ended up with a sony vpl-vw10ht and an rca dtc100 which still hums away. Immediately, when I saw how great HDTV was, I knew I had to save some shows to allow others to see this new technology on demand That is when I built my hipix PC. It too is still humming along. I now watch most HDTV shows on a Fujitsu 50 inch Plasma though.
When TIVO first came to my home, I always said to myself how wonderful it would be to have a TIVO that would record HDTV.
I knew I was giving up a wish by that thought.
I sure hope I have more wishes left

Normal? Normal?!

Who wants to be normal? I don't want the RM's of the world to tell me how I can watch TV. The airwaves belong to the people. Companies only lease the airwaves, they don't own them. If commercial run TV died tomorrow, would anyone really miss it?

The internet learned how to survive without the old style ad revenue stream by adapting and creating a new model. Can you imagine if the web had a lobby in congress, they would have outlawed pop-up blockers!

Oh, and to keep this on topic, Doug, can you add the speculative dates of delivery to your list? For instance, I was told 3rd week in April.

I dont' think there's much point; I suspect most of these speculative delivery dates are being quoted "safe" so as to minimize people complaining if it isn't delivered by then (i.e.; give a date by which it's gonna be delivered for sure no matter what problems may arise unless they just plain stop making them), not as the representative expected delivery date.
