CacheCard hardware install instructions (preview)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is a pre-release version of the instructions for kits we and 9thTee will be providing at a later date. If you have time to review and post feedback, I'd appreciate it. Hopefully, the photos are useful to those currently installing kits, as well. If you are looking to be updated on when kits become available, click-here, and you can add yourself to our mailing list.

Thx,
Lou

Pre-Release CacheCard Hardware Installation Instructions for Series1 Standalone Units

ick. I would recommend putting the memory in before installing the cache card.
It requires quite a lot of force to insert the memory and this is quite difficult to
apply when the card is in place. YMMV.

Also, I found using something soft and yet strong like a sturdy plastic pen
around the back of the connector was useful to lever the cache card into place without damaging the card or my fingers.

On point #1; I'm on the fence about this. I think there may be more risks to installing the memory beforehand (twisting the card if its not properly braced) and its also much more difficult to seat the card and disk tray with the memory installed. I did just complete an install today in the order you mentioned. The other thing I'm concerned about are dual-drive installations - which we are probably going to discourage people from attempting - as you'd have no choice but to put the memory in afterwards anyway. Perhaps we'll add an *asterisk* to indicate that installing the memory first is an option, as well.

On point #2; I have mixed feelings there, too. Don't want to encourage anyone to pry with any strength. But we did have a similar recommendation for TurboNet installs and noone broke anything. Will take a look at that step, as well.

Thx!

I would at-least install the memory in the cache first before installing into the TiVo. Now you may decide that it doesn't take a lot of force to install the ram on the cache card and could install the ram after it's in your TiVo.

Okay, as someone who had memory problems I shoved a pile of dimms into the card while it was installed. It does require a lot of force and here is the best way to do it (at least on my sat t60). Go grab the most recent AOL cd that was mailed to you or some coastered cd out of the trash and slide it between the cachecard and the case. It fully supports the back of the card while you push in the DIMM and is non conductive. Presto.

Now that is a cool idea. But what am I going to put under my cup of coffee, the Earthlink CD?

Instructions look pretty good to me... though they might be updated with a set of instructions that you plug in for the cachecard install that cover other units (ie my HDR212 SA-1 is much simpler due to different placement of HD's). Not a big deal for most people, and perhaps those that can't see the difference shouldn't be mucking around in the first place ;)... butmay still be a good idea.

Oh, and instead of removing the foot from my tivo I did a little twist on the pins holding the motherboard down near the connector. This allowed the motherboard to move up enough that the cachecard didn't catch on the foot - but since it's mucking with the motherboard, it may also not be something you want to encourage people to do.

Thx for looking them over...

... doing separate installation instructions for the SA units, so your wish will definitely be granted there.

Mucking with the motherboard; while it may work for some, is definitely not on our recommended list. We try to steer people towards touching less of the hardware, rather than more, for almost obvious reasons.

Will update original post when the SA instructions are ready.

Instructions updated; minor typos fixed in DirecTiVo instructions; decided to stick with order of installation as originally defined - too many risks associated with installing disk drive tray once CacheCard memory is seated.

Added Series1 Standalone Instructions - see first post for URLs...
