Newbie mounting questions? Please help

 So im getting ready to upgrade my first Tivo. I've read Hinsdale's through and through and im attempting to mount my systems (win98) primary master C Drive:
After reviewing the linux bootup report i found that my partition report for the hda drive read this:
hda: hda1 hda2 <hda5>
from what i understand, the one listed in the brackets is the logical partition that i should attempt to mount. however, now this may be purely a missunderstanding on my part, it seems to me that after reading the other threads of people with similar issues, when they finally figure it out they say they can see the C drive.
My question is how do i know that i've successfully mounted. all i get when i type at the # prompt "mount /dev/hda5 mnt/dos" is another # prompt. is this right?
I'm leary about moving on too far. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

That sounds like it worked. You can do ls /mnt/dos (that's LS) to list the files in the partition. Just check that they match what you'd expect to see in there.
Don't forget to umount before you pull the plug. You might want to run ScanDisk on that partition.

:) :) :) Thanks so much!! i know pretty much nothing when it comes to linux commands. that helped perfectly. one last question. when i unmount the drive, is there any kind of confirmation? or can i just type the command:
umount -f -a -r
and then ctrl alt del?

Like mount, umount just returns you to the prompt if it succeeds. If you Ctrl-Alt-Del, Linux should should unmount everything for you, but if you just switch off or press reset, you risk damaging any filing systems mounted read/write (the boot disk run from a RAM disk, so this is only an issue for the partitions on the hard drives).

You and me both!
I taught myself some last November (and got help from Robert and some of the gang) when I had to run the KNOPPIX disk to get into my wife's failing DTiVo drive. I've pretty much forgotten them all!
