I, like a lot of you, got excited when the Pioneer Directv-Tivo-DVD recorder came out. Would this be the answer to those of us who want to get our recordings off our Tivo, and achieve them to DVD? I was shopping at Sam's Club earlier this week, and came across a Philips DVD+R/DVD+RW recorder for $360. Bought it of course. My a/v setup has gotten very complicated over the years, so when I brought the recorder home, had to come up with a hookup that would work with my series 1 Sony DirecTivo unit, and learned a few things. This unit (can't speak about series 2 or stand alone units) has 2 outputs, with output 1 having S-video. Was no problem to hook the unit up this way, with one of the outputs going to my VCR-then to my TV monitor, and the other output going to the recorder, with output to another input on my TV monitor.
I'm sure the Pioneer is a fine unit, but I was happy with my Sony DirecTivo, and this solution cost me $360, instead of $1000. The Philips is not the fanciest recorder out there, but it suits me fine. It has interlaced or progressive scan, chapter creation, option to name disk, etc. Recording to Tivo first, gives me a little more control over lead in/lead out, to make a better looking disk. The recorder only records in Dolby stereo, not in 5.1, or 6.1, but I don't mind that. The recordings look good, but not quite store bought DVD quality. Movies I really want, and was looking forward to, I'd buy the DVD, but there are some, that are nice to save, even at a slightly lower quality.
Got a Sam's Club around? ;)
