D-VHS or Other Option

Will the new HDTivo unit allow you to save to D-VHS in 408p to 1080i format?

If not will the HDTivo allow you to perform this function to a PC?

Thanks,

John

The D* HDTiVo has an HMDI output, but I don't know if you can connect that to a DVHS deck and then have something going out of the DVHS deck to your TV (assuming you can connect an HDMI output to your DVHS deck).

As for moving it to your PC, there currently aren't any supported methods of doing it digitally. With the current SD DTiVos you can do what's called "Save to VCR" to dump stuff to tape, but it's analog. The same functionality probably exists in the HDTiVo, but it would still only be analog output.

TiVo did announce a new Home Media Option add-on at CES called TiVoToGo. D* isn't currently supporting HMO on the DTiVos or the HDTiVo (or allowing folks to use it unsupported), but if they change their minds, then TTG would be an option. There are quite a few threads on TiVoToGo in the Coffeehouse. You might scan through there or do a search for TiVoToGo (or TiVo-To-Go or TiVo To Go) if you'd like to read more about it.

No you cannot record to DVHS. The unit would need a firewire output for that.

Think you meant HDMI as in High Definition Multimedia Interface.. :)

And, I second ej's post, HDMI is not a standard designed for recordability.

Actually, I'm only buying stuff with dyslexic interfaces now. :D

Oh you mean the new HDMI to RF adapter which creates a crappy signal from a great one LOL

Unless D-VHS puts in:

1) an HDMI or DVI/HDCP input; and,
2) some sort of scheme to prevent "copies of copies" being made (and I don't know if HDCP allows some sort of specifying that content is being played off tape, so no further recording should be allowed),

then D-VHS is basically dead in the water within a few years. I think most are holding out for HD DVD or Bluray to have optical discs holding HD movies, and the recording advantages of D-VHS are negated since no HD set-top boxes that I'm aware of output firewire.

" no HD set-top boxes that I'm aware of output firewire."

Although the cable agreement does call for Firewire to be available upon request.

It's not pretty but it works for recording HD from component video. If you got the cash it can do exactly what you want it to do, but damn did I mention it's ugly. This is not my auction just saw it browsing.
