Anyone want to offer an opinion on this.
Star Choice and Bell Express Vu offer HDTV content with their base packages. You get HD ABC, FOX, CBS, ABC, PBS and a few Canadian channels. Essentially you can watch all the HDTV content that there is but it might be on a different channel. As an example, the star choice package is $25 Canadian. The HDTV receiver is $545 Canadian. So for ~$15 US a month you get all the HD content you want via satellite albeit with no PVR. Bell does have a PVR and it is only a matter of time until the PVR can handle HD content. So maybe within a year (or two) Bell Express Vu will offer an HDTV PVR with the national feeds of all your favorite HDTV stations. The main draw back is that you need a Canadian address, which isn’t that hard to get if you know someone.
OK with that that said I have a friend who has in laws in Canada with Star Choice. For only $545 Canadian she can get a HDTV receiver and an oval disk with the LNB. For $5 extra a month she can add this receiver to his in laws star choice account. Now suppose he takes the disk and installs it at his home somewhere on the east coast. Now my friend, for only $5 Canadian a month, has every possible HDTV show direct from a satellite. So, can my friend or his in laws go to jail for this?

There are third-party brokers that specialize in doing this sort of thing for US residents, like www.canamsatellites.com. I've had ExpressVu for almost 2 years.
When you have more than 2 receivers on your account, Bell ExpressVu will audit things periodically, and wants them all connected to telephone lines, so it's best to stay under the radar with only 1 or 2 receivers on the account if you can't connect them to a Canadian phone line.
Your service will be disconnected if ExpressVu discovers you're doing this, but you won't go to jail.
