ED a goner?

On last Friday's episode, before it started it said something about the last 3 episodes of ED? Has it officialy been cancelled?

They moved up the schecdule to end it early. And we got two episodes when it first moved to Fridays. The season finale is Feb. 6, according to this article:
http://www.thefutoncritic.com/cgi/g...ewswire&id=6359
Of course, I wouldn't read anything into "season finale." But I don't think it's been officially canceled, either.

I caught this commercial tonight and it definately sounded like there were only 3 episodes left in the series.... :(
Posted by: justapixel
Wow, I hadn't seen that.
It's too bad, the characters and acting and concept is great, but the Carol/Ed storyline is really boring. Those two have zero chemistry. I won't miss it much and I would have if the writers had gone down a different road.
Posted by: bullitt
Unfortunately, I agree with you. It's amazing how they consistently screw up shows by removing the one element that made the show what it was, in this case it was the sexual tension between the 2 characters before they got together. The show was totally boring this season and definitely not up to first 2 seasons or even much of last year.
Oh well another of my shows bites the dust along with Boston Public and I'm sure Everwood will be next. Thank goodness The Practice got it's act together this season after being on life support for three years, same problem with plots full of Bobby and Lindsay=Boring!
Posted by: smak
The ratings were pretty piss poor Wednesday at 8.
But, they must have only gotten the front 13 ordered, because there definately hasn't been 20 episodes already this year!
Ending a show's season in February is not a good sign, i think it's outta here.

According to EpGuides.com there were only 17 made.
Doesn't look good for Ed, but I can't see how they can't bring this back next year. They are getting killed this year, and at the end of the season they are loosing Frasier and Friends. I'm guessing 'Joey' is going to get Thursday at 8 PM and Will and Grace will stay at 9 PM. They have a lot of wholes in their lineup next season and the pilots don't look promising.
Posted by: dr_mal
That's too bad. It's still one of my favourites.
Classic moment from last week: Eli's at the town hall, and he asks his radio listeners, via his cell phone, to honk their car horns if they think the mayor's corrupt. Silence. "It's all good, we're on a 7 second delay". A few seconds later, lots of honking.
I've never really liked the whole Ed/Carol storyline; I like the other characters more. Speaking of supporting cast, where's Warren P. Cheswick this year?

Wow ,NBC, apparently, isn't happy with slipping into last place. They're diving in head first. Joey appears to be the only one that has a chance (although 22 mins of mostly LeBlanc seems excessive). "Life's too short"? Glad the little people are getting the work but I gotta believe this is one reality show that shouldn't be done.
It didn't take them long to go from "Must see TV' to "Must skip TV". Well, I guess I know what network I won't be watching...
Posted by: mwhip
NBC is having success with reality shows. So how do they catch up to CBS and ABC? Program more reality shows.
I agree, I will not be watching this network in the future if they don't get their act together.
Fox may pass them, if their not careful.
Posted by: hawkamer
On the Stuckeyville.com message boards, several people called NBC about the promo. The NBC reps said the promo was supposed to be for the last three shows of the season, not the last three shows of the series. Someone else called the "Ed" production office and they said that no decision has been made about a fifth season.
I think if cancellation was a sure thing, we'd have heard about it by now (ala Providence). So I still think's there's at least the possibility of a renewal.
Posted by: grecorj
Considering the renewal for this season was on the fence and ratings have been worse, not better, I can't imagine NBC bringing Ed back next year.
I think we'll hear an official "canceled" notice by May.
Posted by: devdogaz
It's very unlikely that a network has a show with mediocre-at-best ratings, moves the show from Wednesday to Friday, ends the season prematurely in February and then renews it for the next season. The only way this show comes back next year is if they know beforehand that most of their pilots suck and need this to fill a hole in the timeslot. This is probably the reason there has been no announcement of a cancellation because they have to leave the possibility of renewal open given the tenuous standing of their schedule next season.
I really like the Mike character. I wish we'd see more of him. I also wish we would see more of the high school kids. I just don't really like the Ed/Carol dynamic and wish the show focused more on the town as a whole and not so much on Ed.
Posted by: Rcrew
I still like it.
So they only made 17 episodes this season. I've had TiVo a couple of years, so I don't think that's what is making me see the following trend. It just seems like weeks and weeks pass with no new episodes or many of my favorite shows this year. Alias, Practice, ER, Judging Amy, CSI, Smallville, One Tree Hill etc. Seems like we went through the entire holiday season with none, and looking forward for the next two weeks again there's nothing coming.
Have many shows made fewer episodes this season?
Posted by: smak
Most series get at least 22 episodes. I don't remember anything about NBC cutting down on the scripts they were going to buy, or halting production early, so maybe they planned on 17 episodes only for some reason. Too bad ED's not on CBS, where maybe the back and forth they might have over cancelling it may hit the positive with some influence by Mr. Letterman.
They are ending this season in time to miss most of both Feb & May Sweeps. The final episode, probably the wedding, may hit the first few days of Feb sweeps.
Not usually a good sign.

Another one of my favorites going off the air, that is depressing.
Posted by: rasheed
The latest promo said "don't miss the last two episode of Ed". While I am pretty confident the show is done, there is something else to remember about Ed that has been the main reason why it has been renewed: its viewers have the highest household income of any show on television. This is important for luxury car brands. If that gives the show a premium ad rate, that matters more than the total viewership.

That's interesting! I wonder why that is....
Posted by: Maui
I still liek the show although it doesn't have the quirkiness it used to.
I think the show is missing the younger high school kids a lot.
Mike and Nancy have been the consistant high spot of this year.
Phil and Shirley don't get enough air time and while I like Eli did we need another romantic will they/won't they plotline this year
Molly has been relegated to almost a cameo appearance each week.
Cheswick has been MIA.
I hope for the wedding that they bring in all the cast. Make sure Cheswick is there along with Mark and Mark girlfriend from last year who disappeared mysteriously. Bring Kenny back if possible. If it is possible that it is the last episode go out with style!

Where did you read that "Ed's" viewer's have the highest household income of any show on TV? I thought "The West Wing" had held that honor for 3-4 seasons now.

I think that whole 3-hour block they used to air of Ed-WW-L&O had the distinction. But I do recall that stat about "Ed" too, maybe in the TV Column of the Washington Post.

Sorry, you're right. What I should have said is that Ed's very high household incomes are probably the primary reason why the show even lasted this long. It was at the upfronts in May last year where this was said explicity.

Well, maybe I'm just the eternal optimist, but here's a recent quote from Zucker:
quote:
Zucker will remain all day, fielding questions like whether this is the last season for Ed, the network's gentle romantic comedy, which is suffering declining ratings. "We don't know," he tells me. "We'd hate to lose it, since it's one of our 'gold-standard' series," drawing upscale advertisers.
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/dr...2597421,00.html
This quote reminded me of last year: Zucker made a comment when the show was on the fence, something to the effect of "we'd be very surprised if Ed wasn't back for a fourth season." And, surprise surprise, Ed was renewed.
Now, given the NBC promo campaign, which clearly states "FINAL 2 EPISODES OF ED" I still have no idea what's going on. But I don't think a final decision has been made.
Posted by: Frylock
Either dump the show, or end this whole Carol and Ed thing. The show has turned horrible since they brought them together. It just has no flow, and it is no longer funny. Ed has lost the magic that was Ed, and I can't stand Carol now. She isn't someone I want to like as a character anymore.
Posted by: Redleg
We like the show too, but it is drying up. The ensemble stories have gotten weak (We traded Molly and Cheswick and Diane and the old doctor for Eli and the radio station?), and the romance between Ed and Carol feels flat. I just can't see where else they could take it.

Ah, Dr. Jerome. One of my favourite episodes was where Dr. Jerome was making Mike act all mean to Jerome's neice or whatever so that Jerome could come in and act like the nice guy.

Didn't it turn out that she was trying to duplicate the study where students divided into prisoners and guards had the guards turn vicious.

Didn't it end up that Dr. Jerome's neice was a psychology student and it was all a test to see how far a subordinate would go in following orders from a superior, even when they disagreed with the superior's orders? I liked that episode too.
I've said it before, they need more of Mike and the teenagers and less of Carol. There really is no chemistry between Ed and Carol. Maybe if the show comes back next year after they are married, they can start to have disagreements like any normal married couple and that will make their relationship more interesting. I'd even take more of Phil Stubbs over the Carol/Ed relationship.

Basically recreating the Nazi studies (when people wonder how the guards could do it). But, yes, that was her study.
I didn't like that episode. I really don't like Dr. Jerome.
I miss the Cheswick stories. And Diane, I wonder what happened to her.....

Yup, that was it. I knew there was more to the story, but the part that stuck in my head was Dr. Burton doing his best Dr. Jerome impersonation.
My favourite Warren moment was (I think) in season one where he and the Warren Cheswick Experience finish playing a set at Stuckeybowl and on his way out, he stops by Carol's seat and tells her he'll be waiting in a van in the parking lot for her, if she wants to, you know... The whole Ed/Warren mirror was fun while it lasted.

Do not believe anything the NBC promo department says. For example, they're the ones who came up with the name "Must-See TV Thursday." Turns out it's not mandatory. :D

I just got done watching Ed from last Friday (the one with Clay Aiken) and saw the promo at the end for "the final 2 episodes of Ed." I see how this could be viewed as an implication that Ed will not be back next year. However, I do want to point out that the fact that it moved from Wednesday to Friday should not be viewed as an important factor. Reasoning for this is that Ed moved from Wednesday to Friday last year as well and it moved for the same reason last year and this year: American Idol. My point is that it moved at the end of last season and it did come back this season, so I'm not too concerned about that. Also, during the last half of Friends season 8 I remember seeing ads all the time about it being Friends last season, which of course was due to the contract negotiation difficulties. I mention that because NBC promoted the show as though it were canceled before it was certain that Friends wouldn't be back, and in fact it did come back for 2 more seasons. I believe it is a strong possibility that NBC is promoting Ed in a way that implies these are the last two episodes of the series, simply to increase viewership. I would guess that NBC has not decided whether or not renew it for next year, although if you look at The Futon Critic's website you'll see that as of right now NBC has officially renewed just 5 shows: ER, Fear Factor, Law & Order, The West Wing, and Will & Grace. In addition, CBS has renewed 5, Fox 3, and ABC 1 (MNF), so to expect a renewal at this point is a little far-fetched, IMHO. One last thing, I just wanted to clear up the high-income home ratings comment. This was taken from an NBC press release from The Futon Critic:
Through the season's first 15 weeks, "Ed" has averaged a 3.0 rating, 8 share among adults 18-49 and 8.6 million viewers overall. "Ed" remains one of the most upscale programs on television, ranking #3 in the representation of homes with $75,000-plus incomes in its 18-49 audience.
AFAIK, 8.6 mil is not stellar, but also not atrocious, and when coupled with it's high ratings with rich viewers, I think it stands a good chance of being renewed. Personally, I love the show and find the writing and acting and casting and everything to be absolutely superb. I think it's one of the best shows out there that receives hardly any credit anywhere.
Posted by: Steveknj
I have to agree with a lot of people that this year has been a major disappointment to me. I used to really look forward to this show, and now, I can kind of take it or leave it. There have been some major inconsistancies too. For instance, didn't Ed sell the bowling alley to his crew? Yet when they decided not to move to NYC, there was no mention on he he got the bowling alley back. Charachters like Cheswick and Diane have completely disappeared. All other charachters besides Ed and Carol, and to a lesser extent Mike have basically become cameos. There has been WAY too much emphasis on Ed and Carol having second thoughs about their engagement. Where do they go from here? I would love to see the show coming back, but my gut tells me the wedding will be the end of the series.
Posted by: Redleg
And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the promo clearly say "series finale"? Not that they'd have to be held to that, but it sounds and feels final to me.
Posted by: devdogaz
The promo only said "The final two episodes of Ed." It didn't say anything about Series Finale. They wouldn't make that decision this early as they have no way to know how their projects in development are going to turn out.
However, I would be surprised to see it come back. From a creative standpoint, I think the story has been told. If they had somehow shifted the focus off of Ed and Carol so much and more onto Stuckeyville as a whole (Stuckeyville was the original title of the series), they may have more stories to tell, but since the major focus of the entire series has been about Ed trying to win Carol over, their wedding should really be the finale.
Posted by: Todd
Anyone see the promo for next week's show tonight after Ed? They made it a point to say it's the FINAL EPISODE of Ed. In fact they say "America's favorite love story ends with a wedding finale". Sure sounds like it's a goner. I hope not, tonight's episode was pretty good!
Posted by: smak
It's weird, because as far as I've seen NBC hasn't cancelled the show. Who knows maybe the Pants team saw the writing on the wall and decided to end it on their own. If NBC had pulled the plug without much advance warning, it wouldn't tie up all the loose ends so nicely next week.

I enjoyed last night's show very much. If Ed ends, I'll be ok with it. I like the way the story lines are concluding.
Posted by: hawkamer
I'll be sad if Ed goes. There have been some really nice episodes this season, plus I thought they finished really strong last season. Here are the possibilities as I see it, listed in order of likelihood:
- The show will be officially canceled after soon after the wedding episode.
- NBC will keep it's option open, but will then cancel the show shortly before announcing its Fall schedule in May.
- Something will go horribly horribly wrong with one of NBC's new shows and it will renew Ed, but only for half a season.
- Letterman/Burnett will convince CBS to pickup the show. This move in not unprecedented, but given Ed's low ratings, not a strong possibility.
If it does get canceled, I do hope it will enter syndication soon. Since NBC hasn't aired that many Ed repeats, seeing the first season again would be great.
Posted by: lander215
Well, whatever their decision, they are definately promoing this as the last episode of Ed. I have to put some credence into a promo when it states "Series Finale"...but at least we got to see Warren before it all ended!
Posted by: DancnDude
Maybe there is a new preview that says "Series Finale", but I didn't hear those words. I heard "The final episode of Ed" which kinda leaves it open to "...for the season" if they decide to renew.
Posted by: smak
I think it leaves it open, but maybe about 1/4 inch. The way the announcer says it leads me to believe that everybody in the know thinks it's done for.
-smak-
Posted by: DreadPirateRob
Well, they certainly seem to be resolving story lines right and left, which doesn't bode well for another season. If Ed truly is a goner, I for one will miss it quite a bit. The show has/d a lot of charm and quirkiness and many memorable characters.
Posted by: ScottE22
I have really missed Dr. Jerome - that guy kills me!! It was nice to see him back in the last ep.
I don't know if this counts as a spoiler, but way to go, Warren (again!)!! Stella is pretty hot - even if she is the sister of the show's most irritating character.....
Posted by: lander215
I read on Stuckeyville.com last night that the show isn't officially canceled and that they have until May to decide. However, they did the ending like this in case they don't come back next year.
Posted by: pyrite504
As much as I hate the idea of them putting a bullet in this show, it's better they wrap everything up nicely, as opposed to the 'Sledge Hammer' or 'The Agency' cliffhangers where you just never know....

Well, it's nearly official that Ed is a goner: From IMDB:
quote:
NBC has indicated that Friday's episode of Ed will amount to a series finale. In an interview with the online edition of TV Guide, NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker remarked, "It's been a terrific run, but the odds are this is its final season." Nevertheless, he added, "We're going to leave ourselves a little flexibility for when we put the schedule together in May."
Posted by: justapixel
That must be tough on the actors.
Posted by: Frylock
It sounds like the only way Ed does come back is if some new show bombs, and they need something to fill it's place, or they can't come up with enough new shows to take it's place.
Personally, I am glad it is ending. This season with Carol and Ed together has been really bad, and clearly shows how their getting together jumped the shark.
Posted by: Steveknj
IF it does comeback (I hope), they need to do to this show what they did to the most similar show to it, Northern Exposure. They need to start developing the other charachters more and focus less on Ed and Carol. There should be more Phil, because his quirkyness is hysterical, and bring in more of the High School aspect of the show. Looking at NBC's schedule for next year, I'd make Ed a limited run for next year considering they are losing so much and I would imagine most of their new shows will bomb. Ed can't do any worse, and it doesn't seem to me that it's a very high cost series to produce. One location essentially, no high tech stuff and no mega star to pay a lot of money.
Posted by: Rcrew
I had a flash this morning. What if all this build up to the wedding and 'last episode' is just hype to blow us all away tonight?
Complain all you want about Carol and Ed, but I was recalling the two funniest (to me) moments this season. The first was Carol and Ed doing sock puppets under the covers in bed, that had me rolling on the floor. The second was when Liz kisses Carol after Carol walks in on her kissing Ed.
If this show returns next season, I'll be watching.
Posted by: ruexp67
I'd like to see it return, but the original dynamic was Ed chasing Carole, and that is gone. They tried to replace it with Carole being a BIATCH about EVERYTHING this season (I wanna go to NY, No I don't, yes I do... I want a big wedding, I don't want a wedding at all, wait, I really do want a wedding.)
It got to the point where I was rooting for Ed to just dump her indecisive a$$.

I just watched the last episode of ED, I will miss it.:(

At least they got the happy ending. Everybody happy? Good. Next!
Posted by: hawkamer
Me too. They had some good moments during the series finale.
Spoiler Alert! (highlight to read)
Warren's re-enactment (especially his impression of Ed in the suit of armor) was pretty funny, and Shirley's "Story of Ed and Carol" was hysterical. I also think the dig at Coupling was a nice little swipe at NBC. I hope they wrote that AFTER they were told the fate of the show!
Well, it was good while it lasted. :( Now we get more people eating bugs and getting bossed around by Donald Trump. Oh boy!
Posted by: dr_mal
I was hoping Kenny would show up for the wedding :(
JAG got better once it moved to CBS; I'll keep my fingers crossed (but I won't hold my breath)
Posted by: TiVoKate
I am a huge fan of Ed, but last night's episode....I was kinda disappointed with the whole "Circus" thing.... I don't know, like they were told that this episde was going to be last and the writers had to come up with something "wacky" in 2 days for the final episode... . Dont' get me wrong, I cried at the end like I always do - they're married like we all knew they would be... :) But... maybe it was the combination of it being the last episode and the fact that I expected .... more... Maybe Molls will get her own show. :) I realized I'd miss those characters a lot - especially Mike and his $10 bets.

anyone catch the cameo of exec producer Rob Burnett and who I would have to assume to be the other exec at the wedding reception ? They should have had Letterman be the convenience store clerk ! He needed another great role to follow up "Cabin Boy" :D
