MFS Tools boot floppy kernel panic
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have an older Win98 box that I use for experimenting/testing. It has a 200MHz Pentium processor. I can't boot from a CD so I'm attempting to use Mfs Tools 2.0 boot floppy.
I downloaded the file from the link within the hinsdale-how-to document and successfully created the boot floppy. However, I get the following error when I boot the PC:
Kernel Panic: Kernel compiled for Pentium + Requires TSC feature
in idle task - not syncing
and there I sit.
Is this as easy as finding an image compiled for just a Pentium? Does such a thing exist?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

There aren't any older kernels compiled with the TiVo patches that I know of. It's not /that/ hard to patch and compile a Linux kernel, which is probably the only way to get access to the TiVo partitions with that machine.
If you just want to run MFS Tools, then something like the Red Hat 5.x installer disk (Alt-F2 for an alternate console) would do.

I had this exact same issue and wound up resolving it by using a modified version of MSFTools, which has 'TivoMad Utilities' on it, I downloaded from www . btinternet.com/~t.heartfield/tivo. I just followed the script and answered no to the final question of 'are you ready to do this,' because it re-formats the drive when used as intended. Otherwise, the standard how-to from Hinsdale worked just fine with this utility (just remember to copy the mfstool file to your local c: drive).
