a couple of years ago i upgraded a Philips HDR212 with a single Maxtor 98196H8 80GB drive. in the last week i've noticed an infrequent soft "click" that coincided with momentary video/audio freezes. also, there were two times when the display had large blocks of multi-colored horizontal lines that covered about 2/3 of the screen in the middle. they cleared when a TiVo graphic covered them, or i returned from a fullscreen menu.

is this symptomatic of a failing hard drive? bad blocks, maybe?

if so, i guess i'll try doing a backup and running the Maxtor utlities (which seem to have fixed problems on other drives). if that doesn't work, i might be back with some backup/restore questions :) (yes, i've read the FAQs and HowTos but i don't think my specific questions are answered there.)

Yep. Sounds like your hard drive is failing. Act quick if you want to preserve your recordings.
