Question about switching TIVO Cases?

Hello - I own an HDR 212 and added a second hard drive (80GB) to it. It was working great (for over a year) until about 2 months ago and now the unit just turns off (and stays off) until I unplug it from the wall and plug it back in. This behavior happens several times per week. I think it is a power supply going bad.
Anyway, my question. A vendor on eBay sells the TIVO main unit without any hard drives. If I buy one and put my 2 hard disks into it will I have to buy another lifetime TIVO subscription? I.e. is a TIVO unit recognized by the case (motherboard components) or by data on the hard-disk?
Thanks in advance!

The serial number is on the motherboard. As far as TiVo is concerned, you will have a different box without lifetime.
You can get replacement power supplies for S1 boxes. They're cheap.
