Las Vegas 1/26 [Spoilers!]

After watching last night's ep, all I can say is, "Huh?"
I thought it was absolutely horrible with virtually no redeeming qualities at all!
How contrived was every scary scene when the girls went looking for the black light? They even had the scary music, camera shots "lurking" behind furniture, and overly loud breathing... I could go on, but I was wondering if anyone else found it as difficult to watch as I did.
Posted by: pmyers
my reaction was...."Ugh!". Hated the entire episode.
Posted by: dimented
I found my mind wandering a lot during this episode. The whole time I kept asking my self why am I still watching this. I thought it was awful. Even the eye candy that I usually watch the show for was not there. It was just bad in all ways in my opinion.
Posted by: IJustLikeTivo
A total waste of time. No plot, no writing, no nothing. If they keep that up, they will blow a very good start. Vegas is about action, not doing stupid takeoffs on the Blair Witch Project. dumb, dumb, dumb.
Posted by: DancnDude
This episode was terrible. It was a very selective power failure. If the backup systems weren't on, then there wouldn't have been any light at all. The whole thing with Sam going nuts and her shooting the gun was absurd. And I really do like this show but that episode was awful.
Posted by: Graymalkin
Terrible, terrible episode. I had it on while doing some utterly mundane stuff for work, and I don't think I glanced at the screen more than four times the whole show. That's pretty bad.
Posted by: ScottE22
I had my laptop with me on the couch - thank God since I don't think I could stomach actually watching this episode....
I was quite disappointed since I actually do like this show. Not even a gratuitous cleavage or booty shot!

About the only redeeming thing about this episode.
This show had a decent start, but I think the last several outings have been pretty weak.
Posted by: ireland967
The first time I watched this show was I believe the last episode (with GS Alec Baldwin), and I loved it. Immediately set up a SP - very glad I didn't start with this episode, I would have never given it another shot.
Posted by: TivoDaddy
Even in HD it wasn't worth watching.
Posted by: pmyers
I will say that I did like that they finally dug deeper into the realtionship between Nikki's character and what's his name. Might be interesting to see where that goes. I almost think they are writing her character out of the show and she will leave town because she gets so broken up over the realtionship.
And where the heck did this new "head of securtiy" guy in the wheelchair come from? And does the Valet ever actually park a car?

I wonder if Josh Duhamel's accident is part of the problem? Maybe they are changing storylines at the last minute because of his limited ability to walk (he hurt himself IRL, IIRC)...

He must have. Although he had no crutches, he was still limping when he came on stage during the Golden Globes on Sunday night. I doubt they did it to accomodate him though. They've been making him trundle through with crutches up to now. Why change?
Posted by: mwhip
I think NBC knew how bad it was. In all the advertising they never mentioned this episode, when I tuned in I thought I was going to see Paris Hilton and Jon Lovitz. That's next week. They were probably just burning this off.

Same here. I was totally expecting Paris, Lovitz, and Jean Claude...half way through the episode I realized those previews were for NEXT week.

How did he get hurt? When does he ditch the crutches?
It was easily the worst episode I have seen on television in a long time. The writers need to realize (in a hurry) they are not funny! Mike and Sam's characters in this episode were HORRIBLE.

Where to even BEGIN!
The WHOLE strip lost power, and evidently ALL of their generators failed
The Montecito's generator AND UPS systems failed bad enough for most of the lighting and the surveillance system to be out BUT the slot machines worked
All that "high tech" state of the art equipment, and they don't have a manual way out of the control room
The crack about "Maybe he made the dam disappear " as if it had something to do with the power going out (we don't GET our power from the dam !)
Someone was S H O T on the casino floor, and not a SINGLE SECURITY guard could bother to wander over there.
They replaced their in-house radios with Nextel
I am going to delete the season pass, and pull my hard drive and reformat it to scour any trace of this GARBAGE from my TiVo :D

The power outage was unrealistic but I enjoyed the show. Nice to see Mary and
Danny finally get together to at least talk about how they feel about each other.
But I really enjoyed Sam's delusional rantings, she is pretty hot and it gave her a
dimension we hadn't seen before. No need to rationalize each show, I just watch
them for the eye candy and the hope that some of these things could happen to
me LOL. Like that's going to happen!!!!!
Posted by: GT3NE1
Yeah, this was bad.
Everything seemed so forced. Especially the elevator scene. It was like they were trying to cram the entire life stories of Danny and Mary in an entire show.
So the smiley face guy could understand English, but couldn't speak it?
Sam and the caffeine pills...yikes. Horrible.
Neesa's hair was curly again, good.
The things that were working...one camera, one slot machine...WTF? Is that even possible?
Was that big black light battery powered or something? What were they going to plug it into?
I did love the dialog between the dude in the wheelchair and Ed. It brought the funny, but that was about it.
Posted by: TheDewAddict
In the beginning of the show, only Ed and the wheelchair guy are in the security area, then Mike comes in. Finally, Ed and Mike break out, and once the power goes on, you see the wheelchair guy, and 1 other guy getting up and leaving the security room. Where did this mystery man come from?
I agree, not the best episode ever, and while usually this show has some plot holes with regards to technology, etc, this episode was just plain ridiculous. Hopefully next week will get back to normal.

That about sums it up for me. The show has been going steadily downhill and has finally hit bottom. What a load of crap to show on primetime tv, if nexts weeks isn't a significant turnaround, then the SP is getting pulled...
again, dumb, dumb, dumb...

Yah, what was up with that, why were they advertising 2 shows in the future? weird.
Maybe they knew this was a dud, and wanted to confuse people to watch it with those promos.
And yah, the show is basically 50% T&A (ok 90%), not that there's anything wrong with that, but turning off the lights, not a good move for this show.

Come on, that was half decent. You can't expect everyone to know where their power comes from. Even if they did the (theoretical) loss of that much power generation from the grid could trigger a general blackout
Besides, a joke doesn't need to be factually correct :)
Now the rest of the episode was horrible.
Random Rant: Ed just happens to have a battery powered laser cutter in the security office with enough juice to cut through several pieces of ventilation tubing (which is big enough and strong enough to hold a person).

Battery-powered black light...yeah, right, like you're going to have that at a restaurant! HA! I was able to see the cord dragging on the ground as she was carrying it.

It sounded like if the Resnik brothers would have stayed one more day the probably could have hooked up with Sam ;)

hey now, why the Nextel bash? if you notice on the other episodes, they direct connect each other fairly frequently.
What gets me about this whole story line with Nextel though was that Nextel has a marketing deal with them. That's why they use the exclusive nextel phones and utilize the direct connect (although this is the first time they've uttered the name). However, this episode doesn't do much good for the company.
if you know anything about cell towers, you know that they have backup power too, so in an outage you still get service for a while, but magically, that backup power died along with all the other backups.
yes, i work for Nextel, and am quite happy with my employer, but no, i have not drank any company kool-aid :D

I say this to my wife, and I'll say it here..
It's a television show, not a reality show :)
I think all the survivors and other reality shows have ruined people's fantasy of fictional television...
Oh, and as far as Josh Duhamel - I heard he tore his achilles tendon playing basketball, and that's why he's on crutches....
Posted by: MacThor
Scott, I agree with you that this is pure T&A fantasy world here but even so, it doesn't excuse really REALLY horrible writing. I'll give any SP a stinker pass or two, but this was just AWFUL by even Las Vegas' "trash TV" standards.
The Area 51 escapee had just gotten onto an elevator, that is why Danny got on one. Later he's in the restaurant with Nessa & Delinda? Did he take the magic elevator that goes sideways across the casino floor and deposits him in the night club?
FWIW, if I were Danny, I'd choose Mary. If a girl THAT hot wants to put me on a pedestal, I'll deal... :)

It wasn't meant as a bash. Just that it makes no sense that a hotel would give up their in-house radios for Nextel. ESPECIALLY for security.
The in-house systems are much better suited for the type of use in a megaresort for security, engineering, etc where they use the radios primarily on the property.
And, for the reason you mention (towers have their own backup power) it's even less plausible that they all went out so suddenly!
They made so many references to David Copperfield being on Lake Mead, I thought for sure they would at least have a tie-in of some sort ...
anyway... as others have mentioned, it's ALL a big fantasy!

not to hijack the thread... but actually, i believe it's a quite a bit more secure to use direct connect since you're going over a private, encrypted medium, where the transmission goes to just 1 point (or a specified group if so desired), vs normal radios where anybody that knows what they're doing can scan the frequencies and/or channels and listen in.
and besides, it doubles as a cell phone. 1 less thing to carry. :)
Posted by: mitchb2
Possibly one of the stupidest episodes of ANY show ever to air.
Basically, "We have four hot women on the show, so the writers can take a few weeks off."
Cancelled my Season Pass. This show is right up there with Boston Public....over.

and I'm cool with Nextel......

My wife never sees this show and on Monday she was on the computer as I was seeing it. All I could tell her was this show usually is pretty good.
There was no power anywhere yet the slot machines have electricity??

Good to see I wasn't the only one who disliked this episode. I can suspend beleif for the show sure, but when the entire premise of the episode rides on ridiculous events, I just can't.

Plain two way radios can be scrambled or trunked (not scrambled but harder to scan). The scrambled Cops, Fire etc dont all use nextel.
I'd actually argue that Nextel is more insecure in this example, since more people have access to their systems and there are more routes for compromise. (Not bashing Nextel :) )

Yes, this episode was poo poo. The worst part was that it made me think Danny was a bigger jackass than I thought previously. His whole deal with sleeping with Mary vs not wanting to get close vs not wanting to ruin their friendship vs the pedastal thing was complete and utter crap. They wrote him as a horny whishy washy yet somehow sensitive and damaged hunk and think they pulled it off. . .
If Mary's brains were as big as her ... blouses, she would give up on Danny and move on.
What's the deal with Nissa the Ice Queen pit boss now being a bimbo? At this rate Danny will have slept with Mary 5 yrs ago, Delinda recently, Sam is a'coming and Nissa will just have to keep pawing at him until it's her turn.
I came to the party late, when the replayed the pilot a while back and now that I am all caught up I'm not so sure it was worth the effort. :(
Posted by: old7
This was the worst episode ever. I can over look one or two beyond reality events. For a T&A show I can even over look the main plot revolving around a beyond reality event, but this show just stacked them up one after another.
As for the elevator scene, all I can say is, "RUN." Any woman that 5 years ago fell that hard, that quick and is still dreaming about white picket fences and changing diapers, is nothing but TROUBLE.

And the other thing is for 99% of the use in a typical hotel, a "secure" connection isn't really necessary.
What they want and need is the ability to communicate with their officers quickly to dispatch, and report on events that are happening on the floor. What the DON'T need is to have an "even" occurring and get "BE BE BEEP" when they try to talk to each other!
Also, there is a monthly fee involved with a Nextel type unit. An in-house system costs ZERO to use (other than maintenance, etc)...
Finally, being Big, concrete and steel structures, outside radios, cellphones beepers, etc experience HUGE areas of non-coverage areas.

A Las vegas Casino floor with only a dozen guests? Ed tells them to move the dozen to "the north end of the casino" Huh, a casino the size of a living room?

Clearly there was some humorous intent or tangent homage in this episode that none of us really understood. We just need to move on and heal.

I couldn't finish the episode. Can anyone tell me what happened in the end between Danny and Mary? Thanks. :)
Posted by: pmyers
They ended the show by holding hands.
Posted by: Steveknj
OK, the episode was not that great, but, I am glad they explained more about Mary and Danny's relationship and why they never hooked up. And that cleavage was enough to keep me semi-interested. I find her the most attractive anyway. I'm not really into tatooed women so Sam and Nissa don't do much for me, and Delinda is kind of a "smart" dumb blonde charachter. Mary is kind of like the "girl next door".
Anyway, it's only one clinker to me, since I liked all the other episodes, plus I think the point they were making last night, is crazy stuff happens during a full moon.

I know you're not bashing, this is turning into a technical discussion :)
You're right, not all emergency services use Nextel, but a lot actually do.
Yea, you can take down a tower or switch, so in that sense you can kill message from going through, but as far as hacking into a call to listen in, well, i think its a bit tougher to do than with scrambled radio. Granted, I don't have hard technical data to back up that assertion...

the beep beep delay is neglible, but i understand the disfavor of it by some folks.
Secure connection is not necessary for your security personnel when you're protecting possibly hundreds of millions of dollars? So you'd want a potential theif to be able to listen in? I think the owners think otherwise.
Cost wise, you buy a nextel plan, direct connect is free unless you get the cheapest plan. So if you pay for a cell phone, you're not paying anything extra. In fact you save money by having only 1 device. As for coverage, Nextel provides IN-Building coverage to businesses. That's a huge differentiator to corporations. Wires are run indoors, down elevator shafts, through the ceilings or floors. In my office, i get full reception in any place i want. So interference is a non issue. Remember, nextel sells primarily to businesses, not individual consumers. These are the kind of concerns they address, and why they're getting companies like GM to get rid of all land lines and use nextel exclusively.
Hey, theres a reason our financials are better than any other wireless carrier by far :D

Can't believe I'm the first to say:
Worst.....Episode.....Ever.
I normally love the show but this one was so full of holes even the Arizona Cardinals could have run through it. Hopefully this is not an indication of what's to come. But it was very disturbing that an episode this poor actually got any farther than storyboard stage.
Posted by: Steveknj
I really think they used this episode to set up things that will happen later in the series, i.e. - Mary and Danny's relationship and Mike's claustriphobia.
Posted by: betamax
*sigh* that episode did suck. Mary's chest was quite bouncy, so there were some good parts.
BTW, Vegas does get a portion of it's power from the damn. Just not as much as you would think. They tell you where it goes on the dam tour (I mean tour of the dam).
And I loved a woman getting the "Can't we just be friends" line for a change!

Well, I DID say for 99%... :) B
And you're comparing Nextel to CELLPHONES, not to 2-way radios. Hotels don't give out cellphones to all their service personnel.
Since they wouldn't be giving out cell plans to all their gardners, electricians, porters, security guards, etc.... there would be a monthly fee that they wouldn't have with an in-house trunked system.

Only IRL. On Tv cell phones work anywhere. On 7 days, frank used his to call from a bunker 7 stories down in concrete. But tv always deals with Cell phones as if they were perfect. (unless is works for plot purposes for the signal to die at just the right moment in which case it will).
My personal favorite was the battery powered laser cutter. On what planet? ROFLMAO.

Seems like fire codes would require the security room to keep a key inside the room at all times or have a way to open the door (push bar etc) from the inside.
They gave the impression that it was a vault like door, though even in "secure" network control facilities that I've been in, it was just a regular door with a keycard lock and maybe a Guard. They seem to rely more on the security that the general public doesnt know where its located. For a resort that large, I'd think it'd be easy to "hide it" someplace.

I guess I should have checked here before watching this episode!
Wow, that was bad!
I can't believe noone has commented on the use of the infrared camera to determine that the 3 girls were still alive after the shooting. I guess they were so much "hotter" that the rest of the crowd that they were the only ones to register on infrared (and of course the guys in the booth could easily recognize their heat signatures).

I just watched this episode last night and I have to say I agree. From the beginning this was the worst episode they have aired yet. It wasn't even just bad - it was absolutely unwatchable. I can't believe I actually sat through and watched the whole thing. Tomorrows episode does look good though with Paris Hilton and Van Damme.
