So I guess some of the early speculation on Chloe's relations may be true:
http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=16885
...but we're still wondering about Adam!
Posted by: LooseWiring
I don't know why AICN even keeps it's lame little TV section alive. This guy Hercules rarely updates and when he does it's with month's old news.
Or, in this instance, we have known that Chloe was Lois Lane's cousin since season 1 when the creators of the show said so.
As far as Adam, I was seriously hoping his character would be Bruce Wayne incognito. ADAM is the first name of the original actor Adam West and Knight would obviously be a take on Dark Knight, Batman's nickname.
But, reading ahead, it appears he is nothing more than a Freak of the Week using Clarks stolen blood to heal himself.
Also, although Chloe is definitely the cousin of Lois Lane she uses Lois Lane's name as her pen-name. Why would Lois allow that if she herself was a journalist? Maybe she isn't? Maybe Chloe will eventually move on to the Daily Planet using the Lois Lane name? Maybe she will let her real hair color grow in? Hmmmm

Hope the writers don't butcher the show by introducing any reference to any other superheroes like Batman.
The show is Smallville, not Gotham City.
Let them make their own Batman series, and hope that the writers of Birds of Prey aren't writing it.

Hey, this show would be ripe for a Bruce Wayne appearance.
Posted by: Graymalkin
Actually this show is really ripe for a Carter Hall appearance. Or a young Hal Jordan, on his way to the Air Force Academy. Or Barry Allen. Or Reed Richards. No, wait, not Reed Richards. Sorry. How about Professor Utonium? :D

Agreed. I always thought it would be cool if they introduced Bruce Wayne at some kind of young entrepreneur/rich kid conference (via Lex). He doesn't have to be Batman yet, just a very talented, troubled guy with boat loads of potential. Just a thought...

That would be keeping with the original legend, where Bruce Wayne was a full-grown adult before deciding to become Batman. The question is, was he a playboy before then, or did he adopt the playboy persona as a guise (like Zorro)?
And Lois Lane not wanting to be a reporter? Puh-leez. And if my cousin wrote an expose of very powerful and dangerous people and put MY name on them, I'd be more than a little P.O.'d at her!

Wasn't Clark tossing around those haybales a little too easily in front of Chloe?
Posted by: David Platt
Huh.... I hadn't read any speculation that Adam might be Bruce Wayne, but I found myself thinking all through the show tonight:
Young guy, about the same age as Clark. Dark, and slightly mysterious. Has suspiciously good martial arts skills, and shows potential for being good at detective work (figuring out where the email came from so quickly). No parents or family to speak of, but hints of a deeply troubled past.
Hmmmm.....
Posted by: Philosofy
The previews pretty much put a damper on Adam Knight is Bruce Wayne. And as for the "cousin" angle, I think they put it there to hint that the future Lois Lane is really the present day Chloe Sullivan, but they had to leave some doubt about it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was thinking that way. I think it might be Chloe. Time will (probably) tell.

I want to know how Clark explained to Lex that one minute he's in Metropolis looking at Molly's computer and the next minute he's in the barn saving Chloe's life. Lex had to wonder why Clark bailed so fast and when he heard how Clark saved Chloe's life, he had to be more than a little intrigued as to how Clark was able to get there in time.

Phil,
You've got to let it go that Chloe is Lois. It can't be that way. The Smallville team has been ultra good sticking with the established Superman history. Changing the things that can be, leaving the things alone that shouldn't be touched.
Lois is not from Smallville, she has a sister and her father is a general in the army.
Now, I'll grant that some of these things can be changed a bit but there's no reason to totally redo the character and make her be Chloe.
Even making her the cousin is a relationship that I'm not excited about. I don't want Lois to have any connection to Smallville, but now she's got this one at least.
I'll bet we'll see Lois in some episode before too long, but it ain't Chloe.
As for Adam, boy it would be sweet if he was Bruce. Doesn't look good, but it would be cool. If what was SPOILED  above is true, maybe Batman's so cool because he's got Superman's blood in him. :D

Arrrgh! This ep didn't get recorded tonight... A repeat of Enterprise got recorded instead (it would take too long to explain why... it's fixed now though). :( Oh well... it'll show up in a repeat. Or DVD. Or Syndication.

I'm kind of off-topic here, but...Hi-tech mega-corporation LuthorCorp doesn't have virus-scan software already installed on its computers? The users go down to the tech-support office trying to find software to scan their computers? Surely the writers could find some other excuse for Lex catching Molly. That was just lazy.
Other than that, this was a pretty good episode. Allison Mack is turning into the best actor/actress on the show.

In other words, LooseWiring, please use spoiler tags for info that's not revealed in the 1/28 episode of Smallville.
OT, but Newday has an article on the 70th anniversay of the comics and a related story about super villains that said Michael Rosenbaum was recently named TV's hottest villain by People magazine! I got a good chuckle out of that ...
Posted by: dr_mal
OK, how's this for an extremely subtle in-joke:
On the computer where they're looking up where the nasty e-mails are coming from, it shows:
quote:
IP Address: 135.541.168.170
Subnet Mask: 266.266.266.0
Router Address: 091.126.098.197
Name Server Address: 209.54.03.150
The first two IPs have been mangled so that they aren't valid. The Router Address doesn't resolve to anything. But the Name Server Address? That IP belongs to Sun Microsystems. Get it? Sun? Like the source of Clark's superpowers?

Interesting that Molly was using the alias Brainwave.
Funny, she doesn't look like Henry King.
Posted by: Graymalkin
Molly eventually morphs into Braniac.
Posted by: Bryanmc
Molly was hot, but they shouldn't have given her any lines.
Lex was really good in the episode.
On the whole, I thought the episode was pretty weak. But Chloe and Lex did well.

I was thinking the same thing. He threw that haybale clear across the barn. Then Pa Kent starts getting up and he can barely get the haybale off of him. I thought they were going to explain it away by saying that Chloe was in shock and everything was a blur
Oh well. Still a good episode IMHO.
Posted by: JerryK
I certainly hope that Chloe is not going to become Lois Lane. I hate to say it, but she's too ugly (pointy teeth).
Ugly may be too strong of a word, but she's not very pretty.

I was (am) hoping that Adam is not Bruce Wayne. I don't know, but for some reason he just didn't fit my view of what a Bruce Wayne at that age would be. I mean, your parents were gunned down in front of you. Would you really be Mr. You-Can-Do-It to Lana?
Personally, when/if we see Bruce Wayne he should be very serious, with a huge drive to succeed in business (for some unknown reason). I mean, he's gonna need lots of cash to become a superhero!
Disclaimer: I have 0 knowledge about the comic book world. All I know about this stuff is from movies, tv, common knowledge. And, of course, all of this is just my opinion. If you disagree, please let me know!
Posted by: Bryanmc
I'm not huge on the Batman background, but I think Bruce inherits a lot of money when his parents die.
I don't know if he creates Wayne Enterprises from that, or if it already existed, but a young Bruce could be very rich in the Smallville world before being the business tycoon.
Posted by: jschuman
His dad was a Dr., right? Yes, he could very well be rich, but I'm thinking he would need waaaay more than even a Dr.'s nest egg to fund Batman. And what's with everyone in the comic world naming their corporations after themselves? Lex Corp, Luther Corp, Wayne Enterprises....
I know that exists in the real world (Dell, and others I can't think of right now), but more often it's not the case. Kinda interesting.
Posted by: Bryanmc
Yeah, he builds the empire, I'm just saying that his teenage character in Smallville doesn't have to be a Lex counterpart. He could just be a spoiled rich kid that hasn't found his way yet.
Or he could be Mr. Junior Republican. I can see it either way.

"Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" ranks just about dead last in the canon. CoMiX rUlEz hErE! :D
(OK, maybe it's a cut above the syndicated "Superboy" series. That show's sole redeeming quality was casting Stacey Haiduk as Lana Lang. But I digress...)
Posted by: Bill N
the background that i remember on the old Wayne money was that a lot of it was rooted in real estate. then i believe that Bruce's business ventures expound upon it from there.
Posted by: MitchO
Lois should be about the same age as them (i think she's actually slightly older than Clark). If she's not really interested in journalism by now, she's about to take a severe swerve in interest in the next few years ... towards the end, it occurred to me that they may be implying that Chloe IS Lois ... but didn't someone here say that they've officially introduced Chloe into the comics lately?
I don't think Adam is supposed to be Bruce. At least i hope not.
The Waynes, at the time of their death, were ridiculously wealthy in just about every incarnation of Batman. Bruce would be off studying martial arts and such at this point in his life.
I'm more interested in meeting Lois than Bruce, personally.
Posted by: Fleegle
If Adam ISN'T Bruce Wayne, I'm going to be very disappointed. They are totally setting it up. Everything about him screams Wayne. Even down to the voice. I'm thinking that the preview intentionally gave the wrong impression. They do that quite often. I mean, we didn't see Adam actually injecting anything, right?
Also, if Adam IS Bruce, I think they're going to let him in on Clark's secret at the end. In the comics, Bruce is one of a very small group of people who know Clark's real identity.

Seriously, did they have to give the actor playing Adam all that makeup?
Posted by: Frank_M
I'm less concerned about Adam and Chloe... and more troubled by this:
If Molly is this supposed super genius, wouldn't she be smart enough NOT to have her e-mail address be "Brainwave"?
I mean, "enlargeyour[male organ/female glands]@whatever.com" would have been much less suspicious, don't you think?

That was such a distraction to me. I think I may have missed out on his acting skills/talent, or any subtly he could bring to the role. He must have some super powers, or he wouldn't have been able to keep his eye lids up with the weight of all that mascara...

Yeah, looked like he was having a contest with Lana to see who had the most.....

I commented to my wife about all the blush on Adam. It was very distracting.
Don't really know anything about the comic universe for any superheroes so I don't care either way if Adam is Bruce Wayne. I don't think Chlow should end up being Lois though. That would be silly since Clark supposedly doesn't meet Lois until he works at the Daily Planet.

At the end of the prior week the preview made it seem like Adam was somehow controlling Lana. So it is possible that they are trying to trick us.

As mentioned, Lois and Clark is not to be used to base the cannon of Superman on.
And, as I said, they've got the flexibility to change some of these item (like making her dad a doc instead of an Army guy) but not to rework the entire thing into Chloe.
If that spoiler of using Clark's blood was part of the preview for next week then I guess it can pass. (Even that's a gray area and I'd rather not have it mentioned in an episode specific thread, I'll have to check the guidelines.) But if it was, I guess I missed it.

I really enjoyed her original retort to Lex about his tech support expectations, something like "What would you prefer, some PS2 playing dork..."
Anyone remember the full quote? I wonder if the writers debated which console name to use?
Or was it an additional loser slam to PS2 fans, inferring that XBox dorks are better? :D
Posted by: BrettStah
I don't recall the whole quote, but she said Playstation, not Playstation2 or PS2.

Ok, so she said PlayStation... did anyone who heard that not immediately translate it into PS2?...

What I would like to know is how Choloe and Lana only received a suspension for their fight? Lana was swinging away with the ax trying to kill her infront of lots of people. And the school only give her a suspension? No police this time? I can see them covering when Clark tried to run her down. 'Oh, the truck was out of control' or whatever.
Maybe I'm reading a little too much into this
Its still my favorite show on TV anyways!!

Uhm, no. In the pre-Crisis Curt Swan days, his hair and nails didn't grow and were as invunerable as the rest of him. When he was Superboy, his hair and grew at the same rate as the rest of his body (and there was a story where the Smallville town barber suspected Clark of being Superboy as Clark was the only one who didn't get his hair cut there)
After the Crisis reboot, Byrne had him bouncing his heat vision off of a piece of his ship to shave. I suspect he does this to cut his hair and nails as well.
Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
Hmm...I remember the shaving-with-heat-vision thing...and I stopped reading comics before Byrne started doing Superman.
Posted by: TonyD79
Agree on the mirror thing. I remember it with the old style drawings of Superman.
All this Adam/Bruce thing made me remember a mention in Birds of Prey (where Batman is ooooold) about strange goings-on in Smallville due to "meteor rocks."
If BoP had lasted, then Batman would be more Ma and Pa Kent's age.
Posted by: Bryanmc
I don't think there was anything that put BoP in the same time frame as Smallville, was there?
That meteor comment could have been referring to things in the past, or there still could be effects of the rocks long after Clark's high school years.
Posted by: Philosofy
Actually, BoP was set in the future, but set so Batman would be in his prime today. I don't think you will see a Smallville/BOP crossover. :)

Sorry but you're both wrong.
Look at section on invulnerability.
Scroll down to the bottom of the section:
quote:
Because Superman is invulnerable, he cannot blush and because his skin is never affected by the sun, he is impervious to sunburn.
Superman's hair is indestructible and can neither be cut nor can it grow in Earth's atmosphere. (Superman #132, October 1959)
Any attempt to cut Superman's hair by ordinary means results only in the shattering of whatever scissors are being used, but Superman can cut his own hair when absolutely necessary by subjecting it to the concentrated power of his own X-ray vision. In a red-sun environment, however, where Superman has no super-powers, his hair loses its indestructibility and begins to grow. If Superman undertakes a mission to a red-sun Planet, it is best for him to shave and trim his hair before returning to the yellow-sun environment of Earth, where his hair will once again become indestructible.
Similarly, Superman's fingernails and toenails, which are indestructible and do not grow in the earthly environment, do grow and are destructible on Planets revolving about a red sun.
Don't make me go get Ereth.... ;)

I was there. I saw it, definitely pre-Byrne (it was a childhood memory, long before Byrne ever drew Superman, or X-Men, for that matter). (And I'm pretty sure it was Swan, although it MIGHT have been Wayne Boring.)

I think I know the story you're talking about.
Superman was exposed to Red Kryptonite while saving a submarine.
The effect this time was that his hair, fingernails, and beard grew out and he looked like "the Borneo Wild Man".
He tried to use his X-Ray Vision (pre heat vision days) to cut his hair and nails but it didn't work and he had to cut them in order to protect his secret identity (wouldn't do to have Clark Kent looking like a wild man).
He flew to his Fortress and summoned Supergirl (who had not gone public yet) and Krypto.
With the combined power of all three's X-Ray vision, they were then able to give Superman a shave, haircut, and manicure.

Posted by: Rob Helmerichs
The one I saw was definitely heat vision in a mirror (because I remember wondering why the heat vision wouldn't just melt the mirror).
I suspect there were any number of stories doing stuff like that; this was an age before the concept of continuity really existed.
Posted by: Ereth
JYoung is correct. Prior to the Byrne reboot, Supermans hair and nails didn't grow while under a yellow sun.
During the Galaxy Broadcasting era, there was a story in which a guy was capturing pictures of Clark on TV every night and using a micrometer to measure the length of his hair in these pictures. It was a cute little sub-plot that ran for several issues and you thought they were building up to the revelation that Clark was Superman but instead the guy was convinced that Clark wore a toupee. Scandal enough for a TV personality, but a complete left turn from where they led you. Rather amusing at the time.
There were, however, a LARGE number of stories, often in Worlds Finest, where Superman went to Red Sun worlds and wound up with long hair and a beard. Usually they made a point of shaving and combing his hair before he left the Red Sun world, or they would simply assume it and not mention it at all.
The Byrne reboot had his hair and nails growing even under the Yellow Sun of earth and suddenly he had to shave every day. This is where the "bouncing the heat vision off the mirror" trick became mainstream. We also established that Clark had played Football in High School and wasn't a wimp afraid of his own shadow. :)
In any case, there's no doubt he had long hair in quite a few stories in the 60s and 70s, but they were all "unusual circumstances" or "Imaginary Stories". I wouldn't be surprised, however, to learn that they used the heat vision trick in one of those, though I don't recall it specifically.

The "Silver Age" writers often treated heat vision like little invisible lasers. Clark routinely bounced it off mirrors, silver serving trays, and even once the little crystals hanging from a chandelier.
They'd also make a point of them being invisible, but apparently only to non-superheroes as other heroes in the scene would occasionally comment on his use of heat vision when he's being subtle. :)

The Byrne reboot had his hair and nails growing even under the Yellow Sun of earth and suddenly he had to shave every day. This is where the "bouncing the heat vision off the mirror" trick became mainstream.
Thanks, Ereth.
They also used the bouncing heat vision off the mirror for Clark to shave in Lois and Clark.
(ducks for cover)

I'm not sure if it's against the rules to mention this around here, but you can download the episode with eMule or something similar. Check out http://www.the-realworld.de/

One thing that bothers me about this show: Why is Clark only affected by Kryptonite once he can *see* it? He should have felt its affects the moment he entered the barn, but for dramatic effect it happens after Pa Kent pulls it out of his jacket.
And speaking of Pa Kent, it looks like next week's episode will be interesting. :)

Lead-lined jackets are the hot fashion thing in Smallville this year.
Where have you been hiding? :D

Clearly I haven't been keeping up on the Torch's Lify & Style pages! :D

Shouldn't that be the Torch's "Lyfe und Steile" section? (Spell checker authored by the Governator of California.) :D

This was without a doubt the WORST episode of Smallville ever.
alternately
This episode SUCK!
I don't even know where to begin, the only scene I liked was the last one involving Lex and the doctor.
If Adam is Wayne somebody screwed up big time. Since when was Bruce Wayne a skirt wearing pretty boy that can't act?
The whole Chloe is related to Lois thread is stupid and the line about her was rushed and ridiculous (as someone already pointed out that would put her in danger).
The fight scene would have been laugh out loud in most shows but I happen to like Smallville.
Good thing they only got suspended for attempted murder and massive amounts of damage in a public school!? And did anyone see Lana's spin kicked that knocked that Adam guy out? I'm starting to think she added a karate clause for the 3rd season.
And oh so much more. But whisper was extremely good so what are you gonna do. I'm just confused why most people seemed to like this one.
I noticed the episode was titled "delete", with pleasure!

OK, how's this for an extremely subtle in-joke:
On the computer where they're looking up where the nasty e-mails are coming from, it shows:
IP Address: 135.541.168.170
Subnet Mask: 266.266.266.0
Router Address: 091.126.098.197
Name Server Address: 209.54.03.150
The first two IPs have been mangled so that they aren't valid. The Router Address doesn't resolve to anything. But the Name Server Address? That IP belongs to Sun Microsystems. Get it? Sun? Like the source of Clark's superpowers?
I seriously doubt that's an in-joke considering that's an invalid subnet mask I'm sure someone was just punching stuff in.
