Upgraded TiVo Rebooting Problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently added a 120GB WD to my 60 hour Series2 TiVo. About once ever other day, the picture will freeze and then TiVo will spontaneously reboot. (It NEVER rebooted itself before the upgrade.)

I first thought it was a heat issue so I improved ventilation around the unit. The last time it rebooted itself, the internal temp was 46 degrees. Is that too hot?

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?

Any takers?

Sounds like a bad drive or cable somewhere. Have you tested the drives with their manufacturers' diags?

It's a WD drive and from what I can tell their utilities only run in Windows (not from a floppy boot disk) and I'm afraid of losing the data on the disk. Should I be concerned?

Mine was a failing drive. I found that if I pulled the plug it wouldn't happen for a few days, so I put the TiVo on a timer (one of those night-time lights on/off ones) and simulated a power-cycle at a time when I knew nothing would be on, which worked fine for about three months, while I saved up for a new drive and watched out all of the TV I really really cared about.

Once you've overheated the drive, if damage was done, damage was done and there's nothing you can do to stop that. I overheated (which was the reason for my problems), and the drive was never the same, but once I copied all of the data to a good drive, I stopped having reboot problems altogether.

HTH.
