Can't backup my drives using MFS tools
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: toolman
Have phillips directivo, had originally 2 drives, 30 gb and 15 gb. Had upgraded once but those 2 drives now died. Reinstalled original drives, did call in and got latest version of software. Now trying to upgrade to two 120 gb drives. Downloaded MFS tools, using floppy approach. Following Hinsdale. When I go to make the copy it starts the copying process but quits at 27% of the way thru and says backup failed. It also says /mnt/dos/tivo.bak: success. When it boots up the drive sizes are correct, and it recognizes each one properly. Welcome any ideas. tx.

After you mount the partition, do ls /mnt/dos and check that you see the files and directories from your C: drive in there.
Sometimes hda1 is a hidden maintenance partition and the C: drive is either hda2 or hda5

I tried entering 1s /mnt/dos and it said that 1s: not found. Any other ideas? Maybe I should try doing it on another computer. THe computer I am using is XP professional as the operating system.

Not "1s". It's "ls"
The first letter is lowercase L

Thanks for the help. It definitely shows that I am a Rookie. But it still didn't work. I typed in ls /mnt/dos and it listed the following files:
bootleg.txt config.sys io.sys seal.exe tivo.bak
command .com dell msdos.sys seal.ini upkeep.1st
Then when i did the backup command it says again that backup failed and mnt/dos.tivo.bak: success
I want to keep trying but don't know what to do. Appreciate the help.

That's what I was saying - those aren't the files in your C: drive!
Try mounting hda2 or hda5 instead of hda1 and see if ls shows you the files in your C:\ directory.

I keep trying but when I mount hda2 i get the following error:
fs type ntfs not supported by kernal
when I mount hda5 I get the following error:
bad access: block=0 count=1 end-request: i/o error/dev 03:05(hda) sector 0 and some other stuff.
When i look at the drives it appears it properly recognizes:
1)My hard drive (c) at the right size
2)Both of my tivo drives at the right size
3)My cdrom (i unplugged one of my cdrom's to use for the tivo drives)..could that be messing things up?
It's not easy being computer challenged!!

Ok got it working. Here is what I did. I changed computers. I went from a computer that had XP professional to windows 98 second edition. I would think that is what made the difference. I wonder if others have had a problem with windows XP. I never could get it to work on that computer. THanks for all the help.

I'm not as successful as Toolman was at the beginning of the thread.
I have the same DSR6000, working on a new VAIO with XP, modified setup: hda is newly formatted single partition 40G, hdb is Tivo Bdrive, hdc is Tivo Adrive, hdd is CD
I cant get past the mount command. I've tried it with the floppy and CD and I keep getting errors, starting with "mount requires you to specify the file system type."
I have a mount manual, but in trying -t fat=32, or minix, which is the only fs that came up on the cd, I get "no such file system" and "kernal doesn't support this file system"
I'm about ready to go back to 30 hrs with gratitude! Help!
Appreciate Any ideas, Anybody?

'Must specify filesystem type' really means that it couldn't detect the type automatically. As Linux can detect common filing systems, that really means that the specified partition does not contain a filing system, so specifying a type won't help. (Sometimes you need to use -t vfat to get long filenames, but other than that, -t shouldn't be necessary).
Do you see the partition table for hda in the boot log (dmesg | grep hd if you miss it). You did format as well as partitioning?
