Occasional black box pops up onscreen

I get a rectangle box that just comes onscreen. It starts about a third of the way down from the top of the screen. It doesn't go clear across the screen. I still have picture on the sides though not much and about the same at the bottom.

When it pops onscreen most of the time It has some characters on the first line. I have seen as little as 3 "@" characters to a full line of text. It has been all gyberish to me at least. I don't remember this happening when I first got the tivo. It has definately been doing it since I hacked it. The text first started out as white but now seems can be any color. I have seen red, green if that means anything. I usually only see it once a day and not at any certain time. It may happen more often since I only watch tv 1 - 2 hours a day max. I am usually in front of the computer.

There is no sound when it comes up and usually only stays on for less than 10 seconds. It happenen just a little while ago and the text came up clear across the top line then changed after about a second. It done this like five times. I haven't seen that happen before.

I have had all the hacks that I am running up since I monted my 3.1.b.

I can't think of anything else that pertains. Anybody have any ideas why this is happening?

It is not going to disk. Meaning I can rewind the buffer and it doesn't reappear nor does it show on recordings. It more of a nusance than anything else.

Go into your TV's menus and turn off all options that pertain to Closed Captions and Teletext.

Thanks for the idea.

I am certain this is from the tivo not the tv. I have had this tv for just over a year. I have had satellite the whole time though not tivo and haven't had problems before tivo. I will try your suggestion though. Heck I will try anything to get rid of it. ;)

Tivos have been known to send confusing signals to some TVs sometimes, that will put the box onscreen. The owner typically has no idea that that feature has been activated on their TV for the entire time until the Tivo makes the box pop up.

TiVo re-inserts closed captioning information. If it was messed up for a recording - your TV will think it is getting valid captioning information for CC3 (3rd channel of closed captioning) which displays exactly as you describe.

It was supposed to be for important information like storm warnings, etc., but hardly any TV stations did anything with it.

I did what Spire said yesterday. I turned off captioning all together. I watched a couple hours of tv today and didn't see it come up. It looks like that is what it was.

Time will tell the whole story.
