Hey all,
This is the first (and only) forum that I have ever registered for!! I should let you all know that there is not an electronic device on this earth that I love more than TIVO. I have had my DirecTiVo for about 3 years and have only had minor problems with it. I had no idea that there was so much you could do to alter/upgrade a TIVO. I have done a little reading on upgrading to a larger HDD and the mechanical aspect of that is no problem for me but the computer end is something that makes me a little nervous. I have also heard and read some things about adding the TiVo to my home network, can ya'll really do that and what are the advantages of doing so?
Is there a site that talks about "networking" your TiVo? I can tell from reading some of the posts to this site, that I will never be in need of someone to help me out if I get stuck, which makes me glad that I found this site.
Thanks for being here

John

It seems to me that the people who have the least problems with upgrades are the ones who have no idea what they're doing - they just do exactly what Hinsdale says and they always get a working drive. It's the ones who understand what's going on and feel the urge to 'improve' on Hinsdale that get stuck. Just do what Hinsdale says, and you'll be fine. There are some long commands to type in, but if you make a mistake you'll normally just get an error message.

You can talk about networking in the Underground (well, you can talk about it here, but it seems to me that 'Upgrade' means enlarging the recording capacity and 'Underground' means modifying the way the TiVo works. Networking Series 1 TiVoes is very well-sorted by now, you'll probably find the TurboNet pack includes everything you need.

You can't talk about using the network for video extraction here, but there's lots of other things you can do with a network, and lots of other websites that explain video extraction.

There is certainly a lot of good info here. However, I was never comfortable enought to do the upgrade until Igot ahold of one of the books on doing it. I used Jeff Keegan's "Hacking Tivo" which had step by step instructions for everything and also came with much of the software and hacks available to do it. I would suggest it or any of the others around.

i knew nothing about the tivo.... but im pretty handy when it comes to computers... i bought a tivo last thursday, did the upgrade on sunday with the 160 gig western digital HD that office max had on sale for 60 bucks... i did a replacement, so i have my 40gig stock hd if anything goes wrong... and it was very easy as long as you follow the steps in hinsdale.. only problems i ran into, were the fact that i had an NTFS drive in my computer, no problem, switched to a fat32 one i had laying around to do the backup.... and then i got stuck at the powering up screen on the tivo after i put the hd in... but i made the most common mistake and forgot to switch the jumpers.. but everythings goin now... workin good.. no problems.....

so you should have no problems if you follow hinsdale's instructions.... make sure to read them all the way through before you start....
